This is been closed for some time. But was the only location to get Monsooned Malabar coffee, Have not seen it at any of their stores. It has a mystical mindnumbing amount of caffeine. And I miss having live music.

I am super bummed that this closed. When I lived in Silver Spring over 6 years ago, I remember coming here and loving it. It was close to home and a great atmosphere. They had live music, great service and comfortable seating. Very urban and cozy artwork all around. A great place to come for coffee and work on your lap top, or with a friend for catching up. This location was perfect I thought in space and always had plenty of tables. then moved away to the West Coast and returned a couple years ago to find this place gone. I’ve been told it moved to another location, but haven’t made it there. I liked how convenient and close this was to home. Definitely a bummer.

It’s been moved to Takoma Park, but it super small compared to where it used to be… what went wrong? Why did they feel the urge to relocate???

well it hasn’t really closed, instead Mayorga is moving over by the Takoma Park Metro station(damn hippies), which pisses me off because i loved this space. it was always warm, spacious, comfy and child friendly. i will miss it so. apparently the over building, constant construction, and lack of parking killed their business. where else in silver sprung am i going to be able to get a coffee, hot chocolate, and a Guinness? maybe i can put that business plan together?

I’ve tried other Mayorga coffee place(one in rockville) so I give 3 stars since this silver spring place might make other drinks as good as rockville one, otherwise I would have given 1 star. Baristas weren’t bad but they weren’t good either. what kind of barista doesn’t know how to make foam enough to fill small(I mean. really small) cup for cappuccino? I asked for dry cappuccino and it was like macchiato… Just a couple of spoonful of foam and my cup was still half empty. I do like their seasonal special drinks like pumpkin cream pie latte(the name changes every year) or chai and lovely hot-chocolate but this silver spring location was totally disappointing for cappuccino. I don’t think I will get any espresso drink from this location again

The rumors are true! Mayorga is closing at the end of the year! The barista confirmed it this morning. I guess there are too many other places to grab a cup of Joe much closer to the Metro than Mayorga. Don’t fret for too long though, they have plans to reopen at an undisclosed location somewhere in the Silver Spring — Takoma Park area(me thinks Savory). The place is spacious. I haven’t been in ages — actually since they lost their parking lot out back due to the property owners selling out to construction of new condos. There is a parking garage right next door and it is only a buck for one hour. While I’m not a coffee fanatic, I loved the down to Earth, laid back vibe of this comfortable hang-out. Mayorga will be hard to replace.

It’s a sad day in Silver Spring, my friends. I just learned that Mayorga took the best sandwich since the beginning of sandwiches — their Turkey Melt — off the menu. And to add insult to turkey-injury, the fries are no more. REPEAT: THEYTOOKTHETURKEYMELTANDFRIESOFFTHEMENU. Taking away fries, it’s like taking away air! One-Star move, Mayorga. One star. PS: Mayorga, if you are reading this, bring back the turkey melt(and fries) and I will move you back up to 5 stars like you were when you had them on your menu.

SSSSLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW Nice kids that work here, but good lord, they are slow. Something’s gotta give. Went to meet up with a discussion group, and Mayorga is very accomodating in that respect. There is just no sense of urgency. Last I checked, this is the East Coast and most of us do expect some type of expediency. Café Mocha was just aiight. Not mocha-y enough. I really became grossed out by seeing this pitcher filled w/a bright aqua solution(think along the lines of barbicide at the barber shop/hair salon) and filled w/stirring spoons. So when the young man went to properly assemble my drink, he grabbed one of the spoons out of the aqua-solution filled pitcher to stir my drink… I said«um, what is that stuff?» He said«sanitizing solution» For all I know sanitizing solution was not meant for human consumption… and what needs to be sanitized? No one has placed these stirring spoons in their mouth… they just stir coffee drinks… so they could just place water in that pitcher and change it every so often so the murkiness won’t repulse us. I appreciate the concern for keeping things clean, but they need to rethink this one. I will not be purchasing any more coffee drinks if they are to be stirred w/spoons coming straight out of a barbicide-looking solution…

Its great to meet a group here, but its hard to distract from the poor service and the not great coffee. I want to love Mayorga for its mission alone but can’t get past some really poor experiences. If you get the coffee beans fresh from being roasted, the coffee itself is decent. But with such diversity of area/flavor a lot of the bagged coffee beans from their shelves isn’t worth it. From the bar: my coffee always has grinds in it. The espresso is bitter. I have had one well foaming cappuccino, but it was because it was all milk. I’ve had orders go awry or even missing. I understand it when its busy, but at 8:45pm on a Saturday night when there were more folks behind the bar then on the floor? They aren’t making this easy for me. The seating area and general atmosphere of the patrons is wonderful. I have enjoyed my time spent hanging out at Mayorga but eating there or drinking there is rough. I haven’t had any luck getting smiles out of the baristas. If you want to hang-out in a nice place for awhile its great. If you want a cup of coffee I’d rather just stay at home.

Working offsite? Need to meet a group for a brainstorm session? Trying to get away from your spouse for an hour to relax? If you’re looking for some space to do any of the above, Mayorga is a GREAT space to do so. There is sooo much space here and you have plenty of seating options from small café tables to lush leather couches. The walls have cool murals and colorful, art with a muli-cultural feel. Oh and free Wifi! You could sit here all day and no one would bother you or kick you out! It’s quiet with soft background music, but It’s not so quiet where you would feel uncomfortable engaging in conversation. They have a large selection of café items and pride themselves in using coffees sourced from farms and co-ops. They kids menu looked fun and cute — it was nice to know they had goldfish and string cheese on hand there. They also have lots of tasty looking food and adult beverages as well … because I have no problem taking a little Bailey’s in my coffee(wink, wink).

No Cuban??? But wait, change is good, right? In some case, yes. In others, not so much. The latter is the case when it comes to settings that fall into the«third place» category. You know, those informal gathering places like coffeeshops, cafes, diners, and neighborhood bars that ground people in their communities. One of the hallmarks of the third place is its predictability. You want to see the same people behind the counter, form relationships with them and fellow patrons, feel at home away from home. Mayorga has always had a lot going for it, but for all the years it’s been around it’s also always seemed to be a work in progress. Aesthetically it’s attractive. It’s also spacious, and has a variety of spaces for people to socialize, work, meet, play with their kids. You even have your pick of several types of seating, plush leather couches and chairs, different varieties of tables. I’ve also always loved the large windows overlooking Georgia Ave. A great place to sit and watch the passing scene, the people filing by and Metro trains sailing past. When I’m here, I know that I’m in Silver Spring. The free Wi-Fi is another plus. And the menu is at least a cut above what similar places in the DC metro offer. I also appreciate how the ambiance changes over the course of day from coffeehouse with sunlight streaming in throughout the afternoon, to dark lounge with full bar and live music at night. For all of that, I do get frustrated that I never know what to expect when I walk in to Mayorga. Groupings of furniture change. The quiet room becomes the kids’ play room. The staff is rarely the same from one visit to the next. And now, no Cuban? Let me explain. I always thought that the Cuban was Mayorga’s signature sandwich. When I stopped in for lunch a few months ago I was re-introduced to its wonderful blend of flavors. But today when I stopped? The guy behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy when I ordered one as part of the special. «A what?» «No, we don’t have that.» The sandwich I settled for was fine, but pedestrian by comparison. And my coffee was served in a paper cup. A paper cup? I always cringe when an independent does that. If I wanted coffee in a paper cup I’d go to Starbucks. And while I’m on the subject of coffee… and change… where did the coffee roaster go? I thought that freshly roasted beans on the premises was Mayorga’s main claim to fame. I’m really glad that Mayorga has become a regional success. Truly I am. Yet, while I generally enjoy my time at Mayorga, I have a hard time thinking of a place that’s always in flux like it is, as a potential«third place,» which is why I find myself there less frequently these days.

I am very torn about this place. I want to like it but my first experience was not a great one. What we ordered: 1 Medium Vanilla Latte and 1 Medium Latte. What we got: 1 Medium barely even warm cup of milk with only a slight taste of coffee that was only noticable if you tried really hard to look for it and 1 small hot vanilla latte. The order took about 15 minutes and there was no one else ordering at the time either. I really did like the space. The amount of seating, the number of rooms, the availability of seating, the volume level, etc. was great. I might be willing to try this place again, but I have a hard time spending $ 8 on coffee for 2 people when the only thing that they get right is the space you get to sit in and«enjoy» the unsatisfactory product that you didn’t order.

Mayorga is the perfect place to have a cup of coffee, do some work on your laptop or grab a quick lunch. The ambiance is great. Very comfortable big chairs, tables and lots of open space. This place is everything starbucks wants to be but never will be. Mayorga coffee is great. I have it every morning(although not always from this exact place). The lunch food is pretty good too. The roast beef club is great. It’s a bit pricey but acceptable every now and then. Occasionally there are conferences here which seems like a good idea. I would definitely consider holding one here if I had that need in Silver Spring. Also, moms occasionally bring their little kids during the day(I think there’s a specific day during the week although I don’t know which). That might annoy me if I was trying to read but they’re cute so it’s acceptable. Have never been here for happy hour or later in the day. Might try that out sometime.

I really like«Mayorga» not just because it is non-chain(I cannot believe«Starbucks» is on Unilocal!) but there coffee is great and they have some tasty treats. The customer service palce is consistently shocking but — hey — one does have to be impressed that they are able to hire folks who all are clueless in that area(-: Lots of space in this place, very laid back, free Wifi and they don’t care how long you hang out. Did not know that they have live music. Gotta check that out!

This coffee shop is an asset to Silver Spring, giving us some local flavor amidst our chain dominated cityscape. Sure, starbucks is closer to the metro, and I never find myself on that part of Georgia Ave, but there is something about supporting local places that makes you feel good. The coffee is pretty good, on par with Starbucks(maybe a little better?) but the cappuccino wasn’t distinctly different than a chain coffee shop’s. The only difference is that you get a lot less bang for your buck. The shop itself is located in the ‘art district’ of silver spring(but where is the art?) in a cool little building that is sort of warehouse-y. But the shop is actually TOO big. There are three different rooms, but the main one is just too spread out. There need to be more couches in the space to fill it up a bit. In any case, it’s worth a try… but I won’t be going out of my way to go there too often.

Mayorga is a gem that I(sadly) found out about after I moved away from downtown Silver Spring. Having lived right near the ped-friendly downtown mall area in all of it’s chain-food glory, I did not expect Silver Spring to have a unique coffee spot with an indie vibe. The building itself is much bigger than expected with a modern industrial feel; they also have free valet parking(a bonus in SS, parking is ridiculous most of the time). I have only been for breakfast/brunch, but I understand that there is a full bar that transforms it into a nightspot. The food is basic but good and the coffee is great. They have a pretty wide variety. My only complaint would be that the cashiers always seem to have a problem mixing orders up(I usually went with a group). Still, an easily fixable problem and they are always more than friendly about it. Overall, a great spot to study/work/lounge… definitely a place to check out.

I would give Mayorga four stars, but I’ve had such crappy service both times I was here that I have to deduct one star. Today we walked up to the counter to order, but inadvertently butted in front of some guy. The cashier let us know that he was first, which was fine. There are two registers on either end of this counter, and a bunch of stuff piled on top, so you can’t really keep track of the tiny cashier when she’s back there. So we don’t see the cashier and wait for like five minutes, when another lady approaches and the girl almost takes her order until we step up and let her know we were still there. The cashier had been standing behind the counter the whole time, knowing that we were right there at the other end, and didn’t say anything. Thanks a whole lot. She didn’t apologize either, and had a nasty attitude so she may have been letting us wait on purpose. Next we waited another 10 minutes for out coffee. There was only one person making the drinks. They probably needed two more people to keep up on a Sunday. The drink guy kept messing up and had people waiting even longer than us, and then spilled one of their drinks. When we finally got our coffee, it was awesome, just not worth the rude and shoddy service.

Even though my GPS couldn’t quite get me to Mayorga, Miriam W. and I still made it! There was a lot of circling, and the strange valet parking threw me off. I’m a bad driver to begin with, so after the multiple turns around the block, I thought Miriam W. was going to jump out of the car in frustration. I underestimate her patience. We finally pull up to the valet since it’s free and there’s no metered parking available on the side of the street that Mayorga is on. But we get denied by valet parking because there’s no space! Again, we go, continuing to drive… We found metered parking across the street, but there is a two hour limit. Luckily, we didn’t need much more than that! Mayorga was great — huge, spacious place with tons of places to sit, comfy chairs and sofas. I had a cappuccino which came in a homey mug that looked like it should be filled with French onion soup(tough to explain — just trust me). There weren’t as many outlets as I would have hoped for but I guess it’s probably tough given how big the place is. I was surprised by how many people were there on a Friday morning — it was definitely bustling with little groups of people meeting and individuals quietly tapping away on their computers in the back. This was my first time to Maryland, and I’m not sure I’ll be back. But if I am, Mayorga is my spot!

I’m pretty sweet on Mayorga. This 6,200 sq ft coffee lounge and roastery in Silver Spring, MD is every bit as spacious as it sounds. As soon as I walked inside, I liked it. There were plenty of tables and chairs and couches and *gasp* electrical outlets. I also dug the colorful tapestries that adorned the walls and ceiling. The wifi worked immediately and with speed! The crowd was nice to be around — folks working, some together, some alone and in my time there no one took occasion to bark noisily into his or her mobile phone. I’m not a coffee drinker so I can’t comment on that but I was happy to sip on a hot cup of Moroccan mint green tea(I had no idea that Bethesda, MD-based Honest Tea did tea bags too) while I got a bit of work done. The menu also had some scrumptious-sounding selections that I look forward to trying when I visit again(which will be soon). My only complaint is with the parking situation(next time I’ll Metro). The only option currently is to valet and when we tried around 9:30 on a weekday morning, they were full. The other side of Georgia Avenue is your best bet if you drive to Mayorga, but due to traffic restrictions that’s hard to access if you come from the coffee house. I say skip all that and Metro. I’m planning on spending a lot of time at Mayorga!

Pleasant enough, if a little pricey for sandwiches. My mocha was strong and sweet and good. The roast beef sandwich was pretty good, so says my friend, and the accompanying small cup of salad(you have a choice of chips or salad) was made of cucumber, tomato, onion, and hearts of palm(no lettuce; better that way). Probably not the best place to go drinking, but they do have beer and some fun-looking cocktails. The atmosphere was comfortable, and pretty empty on a Thursday night. Lots of people on computers. But here’s the interesting part: walking back to the car through the artist alley area, we passed an impromptu photography scene outside a garage, and it mainly involved purple lights, a smoke machine, a hula hoop, and a girl wearing magenta hot pants and a shirt made entirely of netting(with nothing underneath). Lesson of the day: if you want to see breasts, go to Mayorga coffee and walk back through artists’ alley.
