Showcase of Tropical Fish

Closed! I went there 8÷15÷2013 during business hours and windows were papered over, doors were locked. Appeared to be out of business. Shame!

Sob, sob, say it ain’t so Joe. Just read in the Gazette they are closing at the end of June 2013. So hoping for a last minute reprieve or relocation for them, but it doesn’t sound good.

Great selection of tropical and freshwater fish and great prices if your looking for guppies Thais is the place to go! The front of the store is really misleading but when u get in its like wow its no that wide but goes back forever really pretty fish from all over the world at a great price it’s like fish lovers heaven!

Been in business about 45 years. Great owner. Only 2 aisles of fresh and saltwater. Mostly Freshwater. Never noligable staff. Shop here all the time.

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. In fact, I’m not sure if I’ve ever been in another fish store so comparatively speaking you’ll have to forgive me as this is pretty much all I know.
When I walked into Showcase of Tropical Fish a few weeks ago, it seemed as though nothing had changed since childhood. It’s still dark and narrow with the same smell. I guess there was the illusion of wonderment as a child that no longer existed now as an adult.
My visit here was purely spontaneous. I really just want a dog. All of my friends and family know that. But with all of my travel, it’s just not the best idea right now and I’ve begrudgingly accepted that. So what’s a girl to do for a little companionship?
Well, it’s a sad day when I girl needs to look for comfort and warmth from a creature with gills, but a girl’s got to do what a girl’s gotta do.
So I marched right in there, stilettos and all, went to the the cashier desk and said «Umm, excuse me? I need a fish… for my nephew.»
Now I have no reason why a ridiculous lie popped out of my mouth. I don’t have turrets, so no medical excuse to claim. Just my random denial of my need for a pet. I felt *so* bad for lying, but then how weird would it have been if I just said «Just kidding!» That would be a bit bipolar, wouldn’t it?
Anyway, I checked out the price tags on some of these fish, many of which lacked razzle and dazzle. I knew I didn’t want to invest a ton of money in a huge tank and all the bells and whistles that come with that, so the nice gentleman here lead me to the betta fish, a modest sized tank, a heater for it, some food and drops to dechlorinate the water. Before I knew it, I was $ 80 bucks in and decided it was time to gets-​a-​steppin’.
I was so grateful for the patience and guidance from the staff here. They were able to assess my needs, show me some options, and assure me that the fish I bought could withstand a few days on their own while I was out on my travels.
And guess what? I’ve finally bonded with those suckers. And they have finally gotten over the fact that I named them Sushi and Sashimi.

Went here for the first time to check out what kind fresh water fish they had available. I didn’t really know what to expect looking at the store front. When I got inside, I was presently surprised. They had a pretty good selection of fish and they were healthy too. They also had fish I’ve never even seen in other stores, like baby sturgeon. What?! Once my tank setup is complete, I’ll definitely be buying more fish from here. Probably get a sturgeon just for the hell of it too.

This little hole in the wall looks kind of shady from the storefront, but once you get in the door, you’ll be amazed at how many fish they’ve stuffed inside. They have a great selection of mostly healthy fish. My girlfriend wanted a couple of balloon mollies but the clerk advised us that the tank had ich so he wouldn’t sell them to us. I appreciated his honesty and got 3 beautiful koi angelfish instead, and they are thriving.
They have a relatively small selection of aquatic plants, but I picked up my first amazon sword here and it exploded in my tank! It started out only a few inches tall and quickly grew to encompass my entire 10-​gallon tank. I will soon move it to a 29-​gallon tank, but it will probably outgrow that tank too.
Anyway, I really like this place, but I wish they were larger, had a nicer-​looking storefront, and had more aquatic plants.

Located in the back side of a strip plaza in Wheaton lies this tiny little aquarium store they have been around since 1968. When I was a little Samurai in training my brother and I had some tropical fish as pets Angel fish, Jack Dempsey’s and others. I remember coming here a few times to this little place. Well now all grown up I have nice size pond fish and my little well not so little guys are feeling real bad. They don’t like all this hot weather it’s been stressing them out so they ask me for some help. 3 casualties over a two month period… not good. 3 other fish looking real bad. By golly if they need my help their gonna get it. Usually I buy all my fish and supplies from a Koi fish breeder located out near Annapolis see my review for him under Koi 4 U. But now I don’t have time to drive way out there my guys need a solution and they need it now they are counting on me. So off I go to an old haunt.
Low and behold they are still there after all these bad economic years. In I go, «Can I help ya find something? What ever you need I’m sure I can make it work for ya». Said the man who looks like Captain Kangaroo you know one of those wise older fellows who should be smoking a pipe in a cardigan sweater by a fireplace with a trusted old basset hound by his side. But it’s way too hot for sweaters and I have lots of questions that my knowledge of fish is not finding right now. Well like an old mentor Joe (Captain Kangaroo) dished out all sorts of knowledge only that a person who has dedicated his life to the raising and care of these wet pets can muster. I was impressed we talked a long time about Koi and goldfish. This is the type of patient down home service that you just don’t see anymore. «If you want you can bring in a water sample or even bring in your sick fish and I’ll take a look at em» explained Joe. This is great most big pet places don’t care about a thing especially when they have just a bunch of ADD, MTV, iphone, texting, clock watching, absolutely no help no knowledge unskilled teen or college kids taking up space getting paid for what I don’t know.
So we’ll see how my little guys respond with my new found know how. Showcase Aquarium specializes in both fresh water and salt water fish and plants. They have a nice large Koi tank in the middle of the small space with some beautiful and very large colourful Koi. If you are serious about wetpets and in need of fish, tanks and all food, medicine etc then this is worth checking out. You can’t go wrong here.
