Handlebars was middle of the pack from a rating perspective so it wasn’t our first choice. However we came on a Monday and a lot of the other places here were closed so we went here. I am so glad we did. The service was amazing, the food was delicious, and the drinks were out of this world. If you’re in town, then this should be your first choice.

In a normal town, this would probably be a three star review… But this is Silverton, a beautiful mountain town, but a black hole when it comes to dining. I was going to completely write off the town(I have eaten at probably over half the restaurants in Silverton, and most of the ones on Greene St), but when I mentioned to a bartender in Durango that all the restaurants suck, he said, «Well… Handlebars is OK.» So I decided I had to at least give Handlebars a shot that trip. And it was… OK. The burger was actually pretty good! Wow, I never say food in Silverton is pretty good! The fries can use some work, but baby steps… Service was friendly, too. Definitely go to Handlebars, in most places it would be average, but I guarantee you, this is the only place in town that actually tries.

Sherry our server was great! Neat stuff to see on the walls. The Rocky Mountain oysters are not whole, bummer! The flavor was okay. The elk burger(pretty sure it was not fresh) with green chile was overcooked. The veggies were fresh and the cheese was good. I am not a sweet potato fan but these were really good. The food was NOT hot considering it was 11:40 when we walked in, it should have been! I left still hungry. :-( Maybe 3.5 stars, nothing spectacular. The owners are sweet though!

Very friendly people. Good place to stop if you’re ever passing through. Not too far off the main highway.

This is exactly the type of place I was hopi g to enjoy a old beer and a great meal at after making the ride from Durango to silverton. Possibly one of my favorite restaurants I have ever been to. Elk burger was awesome!

Walked off the Durango to Silverton train, suffering a little from the altitude. Not sure what to expect, but this place was the most crowded, which I’ll usually take as a good sign. Mini me had the mac n cheese, which was quickly devoured. I had the delicious chicken pot pie with a side of a combination of sweet potato and regular fries. Peach cobbler was great, too. Fun décor which may not appeal to your ardent PETA friends, although mini me loved the stuffed bison head et al. Our waitress was the perfect combination of attentive and sassy, if I were a local this would be a regular haunt.

We came here on the recommendation of another family. The food was ok; nothing spectacular for any of us. The dishes were: chicken pot pie, beef taco salad, fried chicken, ribs, and the roast beef with au jus. Fries were cold, and the roast beef was lukewarm at best. The service was ok as well, just average. The worst part for us was how cramped the restaurant was. We were constantly being bumped by the staff and other patrons. We were happy to pay our bill and get back to the open space of the street outside. Overall, you can find better food elsewhere.

Very cute restaurant in Silverton. We stopped here for lunch during our jeeping adventure on the Alpine Loop. The décor is touristy and fun. Food was good and the prices were average for a tourist spot. Busy at lunchtime, but lots of shops to see while you wait.

I do not like doing negative reviews due to the fact of looking like the one person having a bad day. My family has been coming to Silverton yearly for thirty years some times multiple times a year. This place used to be the best classic joint to get food in silverton. However, over the last few years service has been awful and more and more of the food taste frozen and heated up. There are better places to eat in Silverton to get mediocre food for a better price. It seems when the son took over the business it went down hill.

This was our first trip to Silverton and we found the town to be wonderful and friendly. We stopped in Handlebars to grab some dinner. We chose this restaurant as it seemed to be the busiest which is usually a good sign. We were not disappointed! I had the Honey dipped fried Chicken which was crunchy and moist. My husband had the French onion soup and the ribs which were meaty and tender. A must is the peach cobbler for dessert! Beer was cold with a great selection, food was good and dessert was a great finish — that’s 5 star in my book!

We were referred to this restaurant by a volunteer at the Ouray Visitor Center. He said for the past 17 years he has been getting their chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. He said you could cut it with a fork. He was not exaggerating. The place is very western, with mounted game heads and rough hewn wood all around. It’s cozy — the tables are very tightly packed. The service is pretty decent, and the prices average for the area. If you’re in Silverton experiencing the Old West, go to this restaurant and you won’t be disappointed.

I love this old 19 century building, a fitting setting for a Silverton restaurant. Very clean with plenty of decoration to keep the eyes entertained. Staff is warm, friendly and welcoming. I am partial to family business’ such as this. Service was perfect. The food is simply fantastic!

Handlebars is a Silverton classic. I’ve been eating here once or twice each summer since 2001. The positive to Handlebars is the consistency. It’s the same blah stuff they’ve been serving for 25 years. For example, I had what could have been a fine salad for my main entrée. The fruit and nuts and even the dressing were perfectly proportioned and pretty tasty. But instead of using something as «risky» as mixed greens, they used iceberg. The bottom line is don’t have a lot of expectations. This place is riding on years of reputation of being a little bit better and more consistent than most of the competitors that come and go in this mostly economically struggling town. The menu is also designed to be extremely affordable to please the crowds of low budget Jeepers and off roaders. So when you see the overall high star rating for this place just understand the context in which it’s happening.

Great little dive that comes with an attitude, give it right back to the crew and they love it. Best chicken fried steak I’ve had in a long time, add a few cold beers, and it’s a great lunch. Wife had a bison cheeseburger, and it was great. 4 stars for a great 90 min break from the train.

So we walked in and out of several restaurants in this little town and we really liked the reviews and the atmosphere at Handlebars. We ended up with the owner as our server, what a piece of work. I ordered the BBQ bacon burger with fries and she told me that they come mixed with sweet potato fries. So I explained to the nice lady that I didn’t want sweet potatoes, she told me «tough shit» So far this place rocks and I highly recommend it. The food was awesome, my son loved his burger and guess what, so did I. My wife loved her salad and grandma and grandpa both loved the French dip. Please visit this place because the owners and the staff deserve your business, this is the best restaurant in Silverton.
