History

Established in 1990.

In 1995 Dr. Andrew Miz, the current Medical Director, began his relationship with the Animal Medical Center as a part-​time associate. It was always his dream to practice excellent medicine in a place he loved, so Dr. Miz decided to take ownership in June of that year.

Since then, AMC has grown into a multi-​doctor, progressive hospital providing comprehensive medical, dental and surgical care for companion animals. AMC houses a diagnostic laboratory, pharmacy, digital radiology services, an endoscopic and endosurgery suite, ultrasound services, in addition to a dental radiology and surgery suite. Recently Animal Medical Center has become American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited, and we are very proud of this status. Only approximately 18% of the small animal facilities in North America can claim this distinction. Today, AAHA is respected internationally for its dedication to professional development, hospital standards, and the excellence of its education programs.

Business Owner

Dr. Andrew Miz was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He holds both a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences and Veterinary Medical Sciences. He attended the University of Illinois where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1992, and joined the Animal Medical Center team in February of 1995. He is a member of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association, serving as the continuing education committee chairperson, and is also a member of the Illinois Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. His family includes his wife, son and Toy Poodle, Bella. In his spare time, Dr Miz enjoys spending time with family, cooking, gardening, mountain biking, Blues music, and is a diehard lifelong Blackhawks fan. His future goals are to continuously improve professionally, personally, and spiritually, and lead the staff of AMC to provide the best veterinary care possible.

I read all of the reviews online and decided today to take our bulldog baby here. She has had what we think was a sebaceous cyst for the past few years and this week it decided to burst. Very gross experience. I called on Saturday morning and they offered to get me in within less than an hour. The receptionist was kind, Dr. Ford was empathetic, kind, understanding and very reassuring. The best part about this visit was the price. We got the exam for free because we were a new patient, the biggest charge was the cytology and the rest of the costs were medication and it was no where near what we expected. Thank you AMC for being what we have been looking for, for so long.
It is so hard to find a vet that makes you feel comfortable, addresses your concerns, listens, cares about your animal and isn’t just out to nickle and dime you for everything. I appreciate having choices, just like in my own healthcare and not being made to feel guilty for my choices. I love my dogs and just want them to get the best care, without bankrupting me.
We’ll return to AMC, for sure. I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for excellent care that doesn’t break the bank.

After recently adopting a dog — I was referred to AMC for follow-​up care. It’s highly unlikely that I will be returning as I was rather unimpressed with the staff. I don’t believe my concerns were addressed and I felt rushed; dismissed even. I had hoped for a better experience — and left disappointed.

I had to bring my cat here twice. I had just adopted my cat from Orphans of the Storm and they work with AMC directly. The first time I went there it was specifically to provide my new cat with a follow up echocardiogram. Orphans had called them separately and told them he needed to be treated for Giardia. I was hoping to speak to a doctor about him possibly having a cold, among a couple of other things. When I brought him there, they took him directly from the waiting room, did not have me go into a separate room, and after the echocardiogram they just brought him back. I never saw a doctor. I thought this was quite weird. I didn’t have a chance to ask a doctor any of my additional questions. When the vet tech brought him back they said they would call me tomorrow with the results. I said, «What about the Giardia?» The vet tech said, «Oh yeah, let me get the medication.» Again, she gave it to me in the waiting room and I asked her questions about it directly there, never seeing a doctor. They did not call me with the results the next day, I called them two days later for the results. The second time I went there, it was because my cat had finished his Giardia medication and I had to bring in a fecal sample for testing to make sure all was healthy again. They said they would call me tomorrow with the results because they have to send it out. It somewhat blows my mind that a veterinary facility doesn’t have the ability to test fecal for basic parasites. They did not call me the next day. I called them two days later for the results. I had asked them if they could give me something for his eye because it was irritated and had provided a picture of what was coming out of it (yellow gunk). They said I had to bring him in. This is not an easy task because I live in Schaumburg and I have to have all of these items taken care of within the first two weeks of adopting my new cat in order for Orphans to cover the costs for any issues. So, I had to make an appointment and make a third trip back out there. When I met with a doctor, she was a dream. She took care of all of my questions and concerns to the MAX. I would have given this place 1 star if not for the doctor I saw. I wish I could have given them a higher rating but the vets I see closer to my house, I’ve had much better experiences with.

I have been taking our Furbabies to AMC throughout the time we have had them. My first Dog was always treated very well. If you told her she was going to see Dr Miz, she would run to the back door and wait for her halter to be put on to leave in the car. We had her for over 15 years, and she was always greeted by her name with enthusiasm. Our newest furbaby addition just joined us at 8 years old. She is a rescue with some PTSD issues from prior owners abuse. They have been very accommodating to her circumstances and needs. I would highly recommend Animal Medical Center to anyone.

They didn’t tell me my adopted cat had a fractured tooth, so it took 5 days of her not eating enough for me to call them back. When I called back the vet tech told me about it, apparently it was in their report (the vet tech was very nice and seemed genuinely concerned the vet hadn’t disclosed the fractured tooth to me). When I picked the cat up originally (adopted from Orphans), I sat with the vet and asked questions and she told me the cat wouldn’t have to go back to the vet for another 6 months or so unless there were problems. She said, and I quote «the cat just had a physical and she’s in great health.» Really disappointing, that was important information to disclose, and now the cat has been unnecessarily in pain for a week.

My dog is now 11 years old and her age is starting to catch up with her. After ten years of routine visits to Animal Medical Center in Skokie, we’re there more frequently now. Every doctor we’ve seen there has been very professional and caring. I feel like they bend over backwards to accommodate my schedule and my dog’s idiosyncrasies. The reception and assistance staff are also very caring and pleasant. We’ve been through everything from shots to surgeries here and I’m very happy and confident with the care my dog has received.
A couple times I’ve sought second opinions at other places and found AMC’s prices to be not only competitive but markedly less than other clinics. I’m happy to have found such nice, professional, knowledgeable people at good rates and would recommend Animal Medical Clinic to anyone.

This is the first place my dog ever went to since he was a puppy and i’ll start off by saying the vets here are decent. However, this place charges you through the roof. I don’t know whether the tests they performed on him were unnecessary, but he was a young healthy dog so I can for sure say this place were not cost conscious at all now that I can compare him to other vets I have taken to. Since switching vets my bill for just a regular checkup has gone down by half and my dog is as healthy as ever even as an old dog. I definitely found out from later vets I went to that some of the shots he received were unnecessary unless he were staying in a kennel. That being said I would trust the vets there to diagnose a really complex disease and they certainly have the technology to do it. If you have a ton of money and your dog has complex issues that need to be monitored then this is a good place for you because they certainly are thorough with the testing.

I must say in preface, it’s hard to leave your furbabies anywhere and expect a 5-​star experience for them. They don’t understand being left behind, and any time away from a trusty companion brings little pangs of anxiety and high hopes for as pleasant an experience as possible, so my review is slightly tainted and enveloped in raw emotions, not the least of which is guilt.
I researched and scheduled our 7 ½ year old terrier mutt for his annual checkup and immunizations, followed by boarding for 5 days for our own Florida junket, and a grooming appointment before checkout. So, here’s the 4-​star breakdown:
Front desk: 5 stars. The receptionist, Melissa, was very friendly and professional even though she was very busy. An asset when you’re apprehensive about trusting your pet to a new service.
Vet: 5 stars. Dr. Butenko examined our dog, and he was really great with our baby and to us. Nice bedside manner.
Grooming: 5 stars. Our dog is a natural born shedder — the groomer, Aimee, took care of that and had him looking much less scruffy when we picked hiim up after his 5-​day stay.
Boarding: 3 or 4 stars… and that is because his comfort items — two old shirts with our «scents» on them — weren’t provided to him, he somehow got his collar off and ate it (the office did call us and leave a message of this incident — he was x-​rayed at no charge and was fine), and when I picked him up, a LOT of food which we provided was left over… not that he couldn’t stand to lose a few pounds, but the intent was not to be lonely, miserable without his humans, AND hungry. I was still happy that he was at a vet’s office so he could receive care if he needs it. Is there really a great boarding service, after all. They’re just not able to synthesize home.
So, all in all, I will continue to use the vet services, but I am on the fence for boarding services.

Our Stanley suffers from Addison’s disease as a result of trifexis poisoning. Dr. Mark Levin has been taking care of him for the last few months and he is finally getting the treatment he needs to live a somewhat normal life. We couldn’t find a Dr. Willing to work with Stanley prior to Dr. Mark. Office staff is awesome as well!!! Highly recommend this place!!!

Today was my first time visiting Skokie Animal Hospital at 8343 N. Skokie Blvd. It was a wonderful experience, and probably the most tender and thorough exam I’ve ever seen. Dr. Krysta Stewarts was as gentle as she was thorough with our little malti-​poo, and he relaxed very quickly during the exam. So nice to see. We will definitely be back. ~Sheri Blaa

I’ve been taking my furbabies to Animal Medical Center for 14 years and have never had a bad experience. Very clean and friendly staff. We like all the veterinarians there especially Dr. Krysta Stewarts. She recently performed the neuter surgery on our 5 month old westie. She did such a good job, we could barely see the incision. Yes, I highly recommend Animal Medical Center.

Animal Medical Center has been a blessing to our family. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure their clients are taken care of. My mom had surgery so we had to book our two cats last minute. I literally walked in minutes before closing time but AMC Staff Melissa and Lilly went above and beyond to make sure our furry friends George and Moglie were taken care of– so I can take care of my mom! A special thanks to AMC, Melissa, and Lilly and once again thanks for all the great work and more importantly, CARE! You can tell everyone takes pride in what they do here.

We’ve been taking our cats and dogs to Animal Medical Center of Skokie for close to 20 years, maybe more. This is, hands down, the best vet clinic anywhere, anytime.
The office staff are patient, knowledgable, and kind. They remember us and our pets from visit to visit.
The vets — all of them — handle the animals (even the crabby cranky old cats) well. They take the time to listen to us AND to explain test/​exam results in language I can understand. The vets consistently offer a variety of treatment options. They will provide state-​of-​the-​art care, of course, but they’ve also offered less expensive or less invasive comfort care when it’s appropriate. I’ve never, ever felt pressured to agree to a questionable treatment plan.
Because we tend to take in older pets who aren’t in great health to begin with, we’ve had to take several of them on a final, one-​way trip to AMC. It’s a miserable task, but the staff handle euthanasia with a grace and compassion that is truly extraordinary.
AMC’s techs are also top-​notch professionals. On one occasion, the tech noticed a questionable lump on my dog and brought it to the vet’s attention (the dog was in for back pain, but the tech noticed a lump on his neck). Good teamwork — the dog turned out to have lymphoma, but because the vet and the tech found it early, they were able to keep him comfortable.
The care here is excellent. If you take your pets here, be aware that you’re receiving some of the best care available, and remember to say «Thank you!»

Both my dog, Gemmie, and I love Animal Medical Center! Gemmie is a rescue … prior to adopting her, I learned that she had been treated for over a month at this vet. I decided to keep going here (despite the fact that it’s about 20 miles from my house) after I took Gemmie back for her «last» visit right after her adoption. Everyone welcomed Gemmie with lots of love and concern, and she showered them with kisses. I’ve seen Drs. Butenko and Stewarts … they are both fabulous and truly care about my dog. I will continue to come here FOREVER.

Update: Gemmie was pretty sick for a while. The staff at AMC was so kind through this ordeal. She’s on the mend and I give full credit to the team at AMC. They even were so helpful with the insurance claims! Thank you again, AMC!

My dog, Bebe recently tore her ACL and needed a very expensive surgery. I didn’t have a vet for her here in Chicago I asked a few dog people for recommendations and AMC came up twice.
I took her in immediately and met with Dr. Butenko. His «bedside» manner couldn’t have been better. He was extremely gentle while checking her knee, to the point that she was very relaxed even though she was in a lot of pain. Although I told Dr. Butenko that I had done my research, he walked me through the procedure he recommended, even showing me a model of a dogs knee so I would understand. He answered all of my questions thoughtfully and really took his time. After he walked me through the pricing item by item (absolutely no hidden costs! All the follow ups and everything were laid out for me), I told him that I still wanted to get another opinion or two to be sure this was the right surgery and right price. He immediately told me he completely understood, but if I had any questions, even if I decided to go with another doctor, he was more than happy to personally answer them. I was very impressed by this and it really made me feel like Dr. Butenko cared about the well being of the animal vs. just trying to churn out a surgery.
In fact, I was so comfortable with him that I skipped getting another opinion and scheduled her surgery the next morning.
Now we are a few months out and I have been in for her follow ups since. Dr. Butenko always takes his time with us and walks me through her x-​rays to show her progress. I never feel rushed. And besides Dr. Butenko, the entire staff has been very professional, caring, and thoughtful.
Although I have to drive far to get there, they’ve definitely earned a client for life!

I recently took my 4 month old puppy Rusty to meet Dr. Barzyk and had another fantastic experience. Not only did Rusty shower Dr. Barzyk with kisses but my other dog Buddy was also happy to see the doctor. Buddy didn’t have an appointment but I took him along to give little Rusty some support. As I mentioned before, this location is not close to my house and even though the staff at the Orland Park location were nice, I will definitely make the extra commute to the Skokie location because of Dr. Barzyk. Two paws up for her! =)

I have limited experience at this clinic, but I think everyone should know the clinic gives a huge discount to Pet Rescues/​Non-​Profits. I am currently fostering a 1 year old dog who was not spayed. This hospital gave us a generous discount and still treated us well. They did not try to gouge us for all kinds of tests and even performed the less expensive, non-​laser spay surgery.
Everyone I interacted with was friendly and knowledgable. Those commenting on high prices may be slightly relieved to know that the clinic does help homeless animals with their discounts and in my book, that’s enough to patronize a place.

Its obvious by all your other bad reviews that you have quality of staff problems at your clinic.
Anyone would swear when you see someone swinging your sick cat back and forth like a rag doll.
There are 2 other great vets in Skokie why would anyone that loves their pet go see you Dr. Muz. You were not their to watch and I can understand defending your employee…
But there is a reason your getting all these BAD REVUES. Your clinic stinks.

I’ve adopted two cats from Orphans of the Storm in Deerfield; Animal Medical Center is OoS’s default vet place.
While my first cat had a multitude of kitty issues when we first adopted her, Orphans agreed to cover her medical bills and she was quarantined here for about a month. When we got her back, she was chipper as can be! I was pleased with AMC and Orphans.
I just adopted my second cat from Orphans on Friday. Orphans sent her to AMC to be spayed and vaccinated, and I picked kitty up this Monday. Kitty has been in good spirits and everything seems to be going well.
This isn’t my primary care vet, and so I don’t know anything about care beyond what my two kitties had– but in spite of the pretty ubiquitously negative reviews, I can’t say I had an unpleasant experience with AMC. Everything has worked out quite nicely for me; I just don’t hand out five stars unless I’m so floored that I intend to visit again.
Parking is around the side, and they take American Express.
