Skokie Public Library

I absolutely love this library!
The selection of books is extensive and they have interlibrary loan available with other suburban libraries as well.
Librarians are helpful and always available to assist, with research or leisure reading suggestions.
I especially love the study rooms and the computer labs!

One of the best libraries around. I have grown up in the North Shore, and I have never seen as community oriented of a library. They have one of the best A/​V collections I have ever seen. They get their movies the same day as Redbox typically. The best part about it? It is free for a one week rental! They also have an ever expanding schedule of programming as well. For example, they had adult coloring last night.
You can tell the staff cares about their jobs. They just want to help and will answer any questions you might have. There is plenty of parking. The library also has one of the cleanest women’s bathrooms I have seen.
It can get crazy after school. It is not uncommon to see junior high aged kids running around the library with no one telling them not too.

No membership here, but I do visit with my client on a weekly basis. This library is very clean, organized, and the staff is very friendly.

I love that this library is always changing and evolving, especially in the children’s section. There is always something fun to do and discover.
My daughter recently discovered the red busy boxes, and loves the activities inside. The letter of the week board is great for teaching reading skills.
We’ve been loving the preschool story times at 1:30. The instructors are lively and the activities are so engaging! I hope they continue the preschool storyline in November/​December!

I just can’t say enough good things about this library. Their employees are always nice. The programs they have are for everyone.
We often go check out movies from their selection since they get new releases right away. And they have the biggest Bollywood selection of movies I’ve ever seen.
The multilingual kids sections are impressive. I’ve checked out many of the Hindi children’s books.
I love that they have a play area for little kids as well. It is kept clean and stocked with a variety of toys.
This is a gem in our community.

In reading the reviews, I have to concur with all of the other raters, yes, it is a special place in my heart, yes, I like the book selection, DVDs and music, the ample parking, drop off boxes (for cars even), the self service check out, the art work, Mrs. Bush’s award for one of the best libraries in the nation (2009?), and of course — all of their employees (especially Sharon — she kicks arse in customer service). Their website for reserving and managing your checkout items is great (especially the iPhone app). So superlatives all around!!! They even have a library RV that goes around town — that’s really funny.
Now, how can we improve?
1) I recommended this in 2007? Have a Starbucks coffee shop.
2) build another floor or two.
3) after adding a floor or two, create a bigger lobby area (think about the t-​Rex replica at the Cerritos, Ca library.
Like I said, this is my favorite place in town, this is without question — money (taxes) well spent.

There are so many wonderful early learning resources, however most of the staffs at Youth Services Department at the Skokie Library are very rude, unhelpful, lacking of professionalism, enthusiasm, and poor interpersonal interactions.

As a Skokie business owner and Skokie Chamber member, one of the most valuable benefits has been my membership to the Skokie Library. They provide educational programs and a great business resource section for businesses. Terry has been GREAT at helping me with my business.

I love, love, love the Skokie library! I am from Evanston so I grew up going to that one, but since I’ve been in Skokie over the past 10 years now, my daughter and I go several times per month. It’s neat, organized, and has easier parking.
They have study rooms, a nice comfy sitting area upstairs, great FREE performances, concerts, cultural and literary events, occasional classes and seminars, movie showings, an efficient hold system for newer titles, free movie and CD rentals, helpful librarians, two parking lots, depending on what side of the building you want to enter (the main entrance or the kids’ area/​auditorium), drop boxes outside, and even a small lounge area where the vending machines are, where you can have food. They also sell inexpensive used books there. We always look there and usually find titles to add to our own libraries. There’s free wifi, a user friendly website, computers if you need them, and two checkout areas, including self-​service, if you prefer.
They have a wonderful Summer Reading Program that my daughter and I both join. The children win small prizes and the adults have a raffle at the end. I won one year!
My daughter used to love the children’s play area when she was younger. (It’s a nice place for play dates) and now she still enjoys going with a friend or meeting friends there. She still enjoys their crafts room where they have a new craft every week. They also have a great book section for tweens like her and she goes to the kids new years eve party there (with a ball drop at noon!) to kick off New Years Eve.
She saw Dora there, attended her first book signing there, participated in a yoga class with me there; I can go on and on! Whenever we don’t have anything to do (which isn’t often!) I check the calendar for current and upcoming events, and I love that we receive their mailings. Honestly sometimes we go just to relax and read there.
It’s a lovely building with lovely artwork, too, and one of our favorite places in the village, throughout the year… Love, love, love!

This place has it all. Wonderful staff, current videos, music and fun events. 3-​D printer now too. Large interactive kids area. They schedule fun and interesting events from music to magic.
If you want something new they usually get it for you and you can reserve it.
Even a wealth of free downloads too.

When I want to feel motivated to work out– I attend the gym.
When I want to feel motivated to study– I go to the library. Skokie Public Library– to be exact. (Evanston library is okay but Skokie has better parking options and WAY more books).
There are so many great features the SPL. They have really cool computer rooms and free programs that I would love to explore.
I love their quiet room and that they have ample tables and outlets to study.
DISLIKES:
They have DRACONIAN policies on renting group study rooms as well as with eating and drinking and cell phone use. I’m well aware that there has to be a certain modicum of cleanliness with books. However, IMO dry foods should be allowed as one can get hungry well studying.
For group study rooms, I understand that there are booking (pun intended) policies to keep things in order. However, I really think a first come-​first serve policy would be conducive to everyone. There’s something relaxing about getting a private room to study in.
In general, it’s a great place with helpful librarians and wonderful options (thankful this place exists). However, the policies and procedures regarding booking rooms can be revisited.

Love this place. large, well stocked, well organized, kind and helpful people all over. I moved in the city, but it’s worth every mile coming up here to study. And being in the heart of Skokie, you’ll find down the street quite a few restaurants to take a lunch break.

I’ve been going to this library ever since I was a kid, so it has a special place in my heart. From participating in the Book Clubs to volunteering for Book Buddies, and even holding a high school job as a page, I enjoyed each aspect of the different activities and events (performances, cultural events, films, literary events, presentations, exhibits, and even computer classes) that his library has to offer. Definitely much more grander after the renovation years ago, it’s quiet (strictly enforced) and maintained quite well. They have an extensive collection of books, audios (CDs), and movies that are free (no fee at all!) for residents. They have both a normal digital check-​out line as well as a self-​service, whatever you prefer. Finding a parking spot can be quite a pain, as it does get filled up quite quickly! Definitely a great place to get some studying done and/​or check out from a great selection of books!

What a beautiful library with helpful staff. This is one of the largest libraries in the Chicago area, with many study rooms. The children’s section is huge. I was able to easily register my card from another library here.

I love their childrens section. My son could play there for hours and hours on end, read books, play with kids his age… plus the programs they offer for each age group… it’s awesome!
Plus, the place doesn’t look out-​dated or dirty. I’ve been to the Niles Library and it feels old and kinda damp/​dirty.

Unbelievable selection of movies. There are always events going on, depending on what you want to do/​what you need. They show movies often and the staff is usually pretty friendly and helpful. I am usually there at least twice a week, mostly to take out DVD’s but it is a great library to go to if you need to do any thing work or school related.

This library is WONDERFUL. I will say that I do not live in Skokie, so I cannot utilize all of their services… I am limited to walking around in awe. They have two full floors with well stocked sections of DVD’s, non-​fiction, children’s books… the usual. They also have computer labs, study rooms, and an ESL lab! The library is open and details like a large art sculpture near a sitting section make it stand out as very welcoming and fun. I hope I can find a job in Skokie, as that’s a condition to where you can check things out… just browsing I found about 73 DVD’s (foreign and not) I would love to take out which aren’t on Netflix. The staff is also friendly and willing to help with any questions. The library has a series of community events they host, as well as a Career Help Center. I’ve always kind of liked libraries, but this one has converted me to a library lover.

Nerd that I am, the library is one of my favorite places. This library in particular is where I learned to love the library. I’ve been to a few of the other suburban libraries and I have to say the Skokie Public Library is still my favorite (alright, I may be a bit biased coming from Skokie, but really, it is great).
They have free weekly movie showings, free concerts and performances in the auditorium, they usually have art displayed throughout sections of the library, and I love how they have a little room tucked away where they have used books, DVDs, and CDs for sale. They also have some free basic computer classes from time to time.
You can find DVDs, Blu-​Rays, CDs, video games, comic books, eBooks, magazines, newspapers and of course your regular old books. They also have free wifi and computers to use if you need them. This is one of my favorite places to go in Skokie!
