Slice of Life

Pizza is better then other kosher places. Service is not very good and the management appears not to care. Came for a birthday last night with a party of five. Charged $ 7 for a small slice of chocolate cake with a candle. Not very customer oriented.

I arrived at 2:00 PM for a late lunch. There was one other table of folks, so the restaurant was almost empty. There were also two people on waitstaff, so one waiter per table. It took the waiter five minutes to approach my table. I could tell that he was a very flustered person, so I just told him immediately what I wanted from the menu. I figured that would be easy and fast for him. I also ordered a particular beer from the menu.
Ten minutes later, he came over and told me they don’t have Beer X.
«Ok, fine, I’ll take Beer Y .»
He then brought Beer Z and murmured an expletive in front of me as he realized he brought the wrong beer. I was astonished how this waiter already failed several basic tasks, but I just told him it was fine and I’ll drink Beer Z.
After another 15 minutes, my food (which was decent) was brought out to me. I finished the food and waited to signal one of the waiters (who, again, were only working my table and another) for the check. No dice.
After 10 minutes, I finally signaled one of them for the check. I waited another 10 minutes. At that point, I had to go into the kitchen and forcefully requested that they just ring me up at the register, since I had places to go and couldn’t pretend to be a passive Midwesterner for three hours in order for them to perform a basic task required of their profession. The waiter obliged and followed me to the register.
Would it not have been for him picking up a $ 10 bill that I dropped and giving it back to me on the way out, I would have tipped zero dollars. Two points (dollars) for honesty.
All in all, the food is overpriced. I paid over twenty dollars for a salmon quesadilla and ‘service’ that was so bad that is was offensive. If you’re in town for some decent kosher food and would like to be in and out of the establishment in under three hours, I strongly advise that you select one of many other kosher options in the Skokie area.

Great food. Service can be wonky at times. But what is most important is that the food is consistent. Some of the best fake meat and deep dish I have had in a kosher restaurant. I also love their gnocchi when cooked properly.
In general I love coming here but sometimes the prices get me.
Though I will recommend it a million times over. Enjoy!

Atmosphere is a typical café, understaffed today so the waitress was kinda snippy … Food pretty good but all these things don’t justify $ 20 for a potabella mushroom sandwich that really wasn’t too special … I think they really need to revisit their prices for the type of restaurant this is. Sorry, you’re not fine dining.

This place is fine. The food is pretty decent and the prices aren’t horrible for a sit-​down kosher restaurant. The main problem is the service is pretty terrible. The wait staff generally makes you feel like they don’t have time for you, even when the restaurant isn’t that crowded. We come here every so often.

What a great place but only if you prefer food from «scratch «. I have been a chef for over 25 years and am hard to please but am always happy when I dine here. Everything I have ever eaten I LOVED. The soups are great, it is the BEST veggie burger made from scratch no less then I have ever eaten. They make this to die for Spinach Ravioli with Alfredo and even the pasta is handmade and has spinach in it as well as it is stuffed with it and a great cheese. The warm bread they place on the table when you are seated is delicious. I do not know how they do it but the fruit plate is always packed with great tasting fresh fruit no matter the time of year. The server could not be nicer and both owners greet you warmly and let you know in their own way they appreciate your bis. What more could one ask for ??

Good eats, OK atmosphere, not too long of a wait for food. The 4 star trifecta.
Nothing overly wrong, but nothing overly right here either.
I did like how the waiter was around and was patient with us waiting to order with one member of our party running late.
The food was good but nothing too special, the place was decently priced for kosher and somehow even though we were one of 2 groups there it still felt like it was very loud the whole time.
They were pretty skimpy on the bread though, which was a little annoying. They have us 2 pieces of bread for 7 people and didn’t replace it when it was quickly eaten.
Oh well, 4 stars it is.

The dairy side is terrible. Nothing good. The meat side is actually very impressive. Big portions, very tasty and delicious. Pricy but worth it. I actually prefer them over the only other expensive kosher meat place in chicago. Staff is decent. if you want a mix drink don’t bother, whoever makes them is terrible. They definitely need someone who has made a drink before. But the food, especially the steaks are really great.

Ok… so what can I say… this place is absolutely horrible… We went there for my sister’s birthday party. Well, first of all, the food is less than mediocre, considering that I have experience eating out in other kosher places, like Taboun, etc. Secondly, it is VERY overpriced. Me and my husband had mozzarella sticks and salmon patter and ended up paying $ 27 including taxes and gratuity. The salmon was tasteless and grounded. I had no idea you could possibly cook the salmon that is so tasteless! And finally, when our party of 16 people was leaving, for some reason, they were not able to split our cheque into separate bills and/​or charge each separate credit card for whatever amount each person had. Instead, the owner told everyone to make a line and just tell a waitress what each person had and he would cross it out. It was absolutely ridiculous — I have never EVER encountered ANYTHING like this in my life. When people were tired, and there was some confusion, he started yelling at his waitress and other people who were trying to help him calculate. When we were about to leave, some people were OBVIOUSLY not happy about their services and the way the owner was approaching things, so they told him their concerns. Instead of saying ‘I’m sorry’ and being client-​friendly, he started yelling again ‘I’m not a piece of shit!’…etc. For me it was a spoiled night, wasted time and money. I was also sad that my sister’s birthday was spoiled because of some shitty place calling themselves ‘Slice of Life’, when in reality it is ‘Slice of s…’ That was the WORST restaurant experience in my whole life!!!

KOSHER! Many people may assume that this place is just a pizza joint but it’s certified KOSHER and the food is so delicious! It’s more upscale than I thought so I’m glad I was picking up to go and noticed what attire is the «norm» before I dined in.

Much improved. I’ve been here several times since the last review and I’m impressed. Soups are excellent and salads are huge. The falafel appetizer was pretty good-​I especially liked the hummus, baba ganoush and israeli salad –the falafels were a bit dry. The tempura vegetables were excellent as well, very light and crispy. The eggplant parmesan was ok, nothing to get gooey about, a little underseasoned and the last slice was undercooked so I won’t do that again. However the spinach lasagna and ravioli were damn good.
When money allows, I’d like to try the meat side.

I have been going to Slice of Life for almost 20 years. They catered a number of my family functions, from small to large. The food was always fabulous, fresh, displayed beautifully, the orders were on time, everyone was courteous and I have never had an issue. I am sorry that some of these reviewers have not had the experiences that they expected. It is worth a second try:-))))))

Slice of Life likely only survives because of their captive customer base: the orthodox Jewish community in Skokie. Unfortunately, these customers put up with food made with hardly any love and abysmal service.
This is the sort of restaurant Gordon Ramsay or Robert Irvine would have a field day with. The owner of the restaurant coming out onto the floor to yell at his servers is quite literally right out of one of those reality TV shows where Ramsay or Irvine has been brought in to save the sinking ship of a restaurant.
The customers that continue to frequent this place ought to ask their non religious friends about their experiences in non-​Kosher restaurants. It would provide an eye opening point of reference to compare the sort of service and quality of food they ought to be getting at Slice of Life but don’t.
As for the food at Slice — it’s fairly uninspired. Should you order anything fried, be prepared for it to come to your table oily and gross because the oil temperature was too low when the item was fried. The pizza really is quite mediocre compared to the pizza served by other kosher restaurants in the area. The sauce isn’t seasoned in any particularly inventive way. The crust is just your typically floppy, slightly New York inspired variety with little in the way of flavor. Anyone who’s ever had pizza at a non-​kosher restaurant would call the pizza at Slice of Life on-​par with what you get from such culinary giants as PIzza Hut and Domino’s.
The only mildly decent items on the menu are the fish dishes, which approximate something you could make at home, only not quite as good.

The food is good, but not great. The service is possibly the worst I have ever experienced. Bickering staff can make it unpleasant. I’d probably go only if there were no other options.

Their pizza is awesome, I highly recommend it, and the owner Sheldon is super nice and fun to hang with, ill be back !

Last night my husband and I arrived at 8:55pm and the restaurant closes at 9… they let us in told us to sit down, when we were fully prepared to take it to go, I had been craving the gnoci with tomato cream sauce all week, they still served us bread, offered us the wine and beer list, made us feel comfortable even though they were closing. The goat cheese pizza was awesome.

Today was (with any luck) the last time I will ever have to set foot in this restaurant (if you could even call it that). The food has never been anything I’ve enjoyed (I once ordered a plain pasta dish there years ago thinking they couldn’t screw it up… I was wrong) but my review here today isn’t even about the taste of the food exactly — but the overall experience and subsequent price we had to pay for the experience.
My family decided to have Mother’s Day brunch at Slice of Life because my cousin and his family keep Kosher. No biggie — I’ve had delicious Kosher food before. When we showed up, we were told it was buffet-​only and were less than enthused to be witness to not one, not two, but THREE different instances (2 children and 1 older woman) of people coughing all over the food. These weren’t the kind of coughs where someone had a tickle in their throat. This was a Kosher Mucus family reunion being sprayed all over the only food made available. Oh, and the coughing was all witnessed within fifteen minutes of us arriving — who knows what kind of crap was happening before we got there and after we decided to take our seats and wait a while in the hopes that the food would have been swapped out by the time we went and reached for plates.
When I got my plate, I made sure to dig to the bottom of a pile of sautéed vegetables — which were fine, not great, not difficult to make. I took half a plain bagel (there were a total of three different kinds of bagels to choose from: plain, sesame and plain with a couple of oaty-​looking bits). I decided to try some potatoes — but they were cold and mushy and not worthy of finishing or being called a real potato dish. As a beverage, I ordered coffee that was so weak it should’ve just been called «brown water».
That was the total of what I ate and the rest of my family didn’t eat much more than I did. Maybe they had a bite of a tiny dry muffin for dessert or a full bagel instead of the half I ate. So let me remind you: This was the dairy side of a Kosher brunch buffet so there was obviously no meat (not a complaint but should factor into my end conclusion), there was no omelette station, no yogurt, no bagel variety, no juice orders being taken, no granola, no big fresh fruit bowl, no cream cheese variety — it was coughed on — and we got it all ourselves. What do you think this buffet experience cost per person? If it had been $ 10 it would have been over-​priced. If it had been $ 20, I would have laughed in someone’s face… this was $ 30 PER PERSON and then they added an 18% gratuity charge to that. Yep, someone was paid $ 72 to check on our coffee status a total of four times. Kudos to that dude for finding such a cushy job.
My family can barely agree on anything — but we sure as hell all agreed we’re never going back there again.

Extremely extensive menu, perhaps to their detriment. Large wine, beer and alcohol list. Now takes credit cards.

Sorry to say this but i got very sick from their pizza. I would call this place life of vomit. The service is embrassing and hostest is very plastic. I love hy life.

As I used to work at a Jewish organization, I ate Slice of Life pizza on a very regular basis. I’m not Jewish, but as a vegetarian I like to say that I keep kosher by default. I must admit that their pizza is pretty darn good. The cheese melts nicely and the sauce has a nice tang to it.
I never actually ate in the restaurant, though I did purchase some gift certificates there once and it seemed like a pleasant place. I’m fortunate that I don’t have to worry about the kosher status of my food, but it’s good to know that this option is available for those that do,
The restaurant is certified kosher and actually has two kitchens. Hy Life Bistro also serves meat if you are interested in that stuff.
