Tarrytown Lighthouse

I don’t know if we really lucked out or broke some rules but while walking toward the lighthouse from the park, the gate mentioned in another review was open so we walked over. The bridge was open so we walked across and explored a bit. A REAL shame to see the graffiti on the bottom and wish they’d repaint it. I’m sure even volunteers would be willing to donate time to do it. Actually, I’d go back just to help with that. Great view of the Tappan Zee and cute little lighthouse. There wasn’t anyone at the parking area to collect a fee and a sign said you needed to have proof of West Chester residency which seemed crazy to us but we had it to ourselves and it looked like a parade was starting there the next day. One of the highlights of our visit to the area.

My girlfriends and I made a trip out to Tarrytown this past weekend. When researching things to do here, the lighthouse came up. We drove to Kingsland Park and parked ($ 8 parking fee for non-​residents). Walking along the river, we reached a big gate that said the lighthouse was closed. There was a callbox next to the gate, but it wasn’t working. After debating whether or not we should climb through the hole in the gate, we decided to go for it (apparently it’s allowed). We reached the small bridge to the lighthouse, crossed it and entered. This is a really small lighthouse, but a landmark nonetheless. Inside is a tiny museum of the history of the lighthouse. You can climb all the way to the top. There was a man sitting at the top who can answer any questions you have and who gives short tours. The view from the top is really nice!

Beautiful and historic landmark. Problem is it is rarely opened to the public. Last year it was opened for tours on 3 Sundays from August to September. Only way to get close to it is to scale a fence or climb down a small wall and around a spiked barricade. The views are spectacular along with amazing sunsets. Village of Sleepy Hollow needs to make this Lighthouse which opened in 1883 more accessible.
