History

Established in 1911.

In its early years, Solvang never advertised its Danish cultural heritage.

Bethania Lutheran (1928) was the first building in Solvang to display the Danish heritage of the town’s settlers.

A hallmark of Solvang’s Danish look is bindingsværk. This type of construction was popular in Denmark as early as the 16th century. Literally meaning brick and timber, this half-​timber construction technique (sometimes using stucco as an alternative to brick) is typical of Danish medieval buildings. In the 1930s, individual building projects in Solvang started to use bindingsværk architectural style. However, most residents could not afford real timbers. Instead, sculpted cement mixed with brown pigment sufficed to create the impression of wood beams.

Small little building that has maps and 2 for 1 coupons for the wine bars.
They have a decent sized free public parking lot here. There is also a restroom building in this lot too.
Great starting point for your Solvang adventure.

The guide we spoke to was very friendly & took his time with erray of brochures & first hand knowledge of the city & the surounding area; Peter I think was his name. They definitely take the time to get to know your interests.

The Visitors Bureau was great. However, they sold a Tolley-​Style Bus Tour of the valley. This was very expensive ($ 50 for two) and was the worst tour we ever have been on. The speakers were so bad the driver finally stopped talking. The trolley squeaked and groaned — it desperately needed shocks. And the seats were full of splinters. It appears this differs from the horse-​drawn trolley tour of the city. Later we saw the tour bus zipping by some really interesting things — again the driver was not slowing down or talking. Our assumptions is that those customers also complained about the speakers. I contacted the company and recommended they put some maintenance into the equipment. Until they do this, avoid this tour! Instead, take the city bus through the whole route. $ 1.50 or so and you can see the same things — only in comfort!

This is the perfect place to stop when you arrive in the «Danish Capital of America». The Solvang Visitors Information Center has all the brochures and literature you’ll need to enjoy everything that Solvang and the surrounding areas has to offer.
The friendly, courteous, informative staff will answer all your questions about what to do or see.
There are many boutiques (my wife likes to spend $$$ in them), specialty shops, restaurants, Danish bakeries, more than a dozen wine tasting rooms, all within walking distance. Many museums and motels to spend a night.
Solvang is the perfect getaway almost year round.
