Just bought a bookshelf here! Very high quality solid wood furniture of the type that is near impossible to find in big box stores these days. Their unfinished furniture is reasonably priced for the quality. The finishing prices are a little intimidating, but they do a great job and finish in house. I opted for unfinished since I’m not planning on getting my bookshelf wet and the surface is great. If you are ordering custom and not buying a piece that’s already in the store, be prepared to wait a couple weeks for it to come it. I lucked out and they had what I wanted in the store. Delivery fee if you’re located in Somerville or Cambridge is very reasonable. Very happy with my new bookshelf!

We purchased a set of shelves, an end table and coffee table from the Somerville location. The in-store experience was very good. I wasn’t sure if bookshelves needed to be finished or not; the gentleman who assisted us said he’s got a set like the ones we were looking at that he’s had for years unfinished with no problems. He did suggest that the coffee table be polyurethaned for protection. So I feel like I got honest advice since he certainly could have sold us a finish job on the cases as well. Delivery of the items was a bit of an adventure owing to a series of miscommunications(entirely my fault) which resulted in two trips to our apartment. Their merchandise is clearly quality, and made by them(there were people working on pieces in the store when we visited). No, it’s not cheap but not outrageous either — and do you want furniture that you own or that you rent until it falls apart and has to be replaced? We opted for the former and I’m very glad we did. I will definitely return(and make sure I give the correct phone number this time).

This review is for the somerville location. Their furniture is great; service is not. We bought and paid for two bookcases; one was in stock and the other needed to be ordered. It was promised in 2 – 3 weeks. More than two months later, no word. I called and was told soon. Another month passed. I called again and was told the case had arrived but had not yet been finished. It took another three weeks for the finishing(I finished the original case myself so I know that it was a three hour job plus drying time). Just picked up my bookcase — after almost four months. No apology, no offer of free delivery, no discount. Laid back and not pushy is one thing; this guy just doesn’t care. There are parts missing from one of the bookcases; I just can’t bear the hassle of dealing with this store again. We have a lot of books; too bad I’ll never shop here again.

I have a lot of bookcases, and in recent years Barry at the BFO has been my go-to guy to build them. They reliably deliver sturdily built and well-finished products made to my particular specs. If you have custom furniture needs, this place is a good option. I’ll be back if I can find any more space in my loft to stick in another bookcase…

This review is for the Somerville(Cambridge) location. The store is packed with wonderful, unfinished furniture. If there is something you like but it is not the right size, they can either find it in the right size or make it for you. They will do the refinishing for you, too(for a cost). I found the store staff to be very helpful, not pushy, but very accommodating. They deliver and help set up, too. We had three wonderful bookcases custom made by them and they look great.
