Magpie

Magpie is an independently owned store in the heart of Davis Square that sells handmade craft and indie design produced by local area artisans. It is the perfect place to buy gifts (such as nail polish, jewelry, art, cards, stationary, housewares, baby, t-​shirts). Some of my favorite items include The Local Foodie Wheel, Farm and Nature Anatomy books, decorative stones, cactus patterned mug, food themed catnip (e.g., French Fries, Pizza), Pizza Recipe Dice, Q’s Nuts, Somerville Chocolates, Apotheker’s Marshmallows, and Sleepy Mountain Pins.

Been in here twice — been utterly ignored twice. The store is not that special (looks like the leftovers of a better hipster store) that they can get away with just being rude.
If you can’t be bothered to say «hi» when a customer comes in – and especially when he’s standing two feet from you at the counter you do not deserve my business
I won’t be back.
Go across the street to D-​squared where they are a) friendly, b) have a much bigger better selection of hipster gifts and c) play good music

Good people with fun stuff, they have a great kids store too. When I shop there I feel good about supporting a local business.

Such a cute little place with humorous, unique & heartfelt stationary & doodads. They also sell Eco-​friendly products! Love this boutique and the friendly service :)

A lot of great handmade gifts from local artists. Really nice selection of jewelry. I also like their funky notebooks made out of old library books and many items related to Davis Square. However, the BEST thing about this store is the UNBELIEVABLE CARD SELECTION!!! The cards are mostly letter press, and are well made and designed. (You might think that a card is just a card, but people are always asking me where I found the ones I gave them from Magpie.) For every occasion, funny, arty, sometimes hipster-​y and always different from what you’d find anywhere else. Though most of the cards are fun, this is also one of the only places I’ve found that has beautiful sympathy cards. I get almost all my cards at this store. Really nice and helpful staff too.

This is one of my favorite shops in Davis Square. It’s aesthetic is quintessentially «New Somerville», and features an awesome array of locally– and handmade goods. The real draw for me, though is the wide selection of quirky greeting cards. Magpie has become the exclusive supplier of block pressed and handmade sweet/​punny/​clever/​thank you/​sympathy/​birthday/​catchall occasion cards. And as a result, choosy mom and skeptical sister have both gone out of their way to comment on how much they love the cards their receive! (Score!)
For when a card is not enough, there are a lot of other great small gifts — locally-​made chocolate, interesting jewelry, beautiful block-​printed posters, a suprising range of things to open bottles of beer, and my most recent impulse-​buy: chai-​spiced goat’s milk caramels. I know, how could I not?!
The missing star on this review relates to price — this isn’t your local Family Dollar, but I don’t mind occasionally paying a little more to support local business and producers!

Magpie has lots of cool locally made stuff. I recently went shopping for a gift for someone. I visited both D Squared and Magpie. I do like D Squared but I found that most of the kitschy stuff that they sold was made in China. Seems like everything I picked up was from there. While they did sell some locally made stuff it was nothing compared to what Magpie had. For a much smaller store Magpie has a great collection of prints, clothing and odd nic-​nacs. They definitely place more of an effort in curating a locally sourced inventory. Worth checking out.

I dare you not to buy something in here! What an outstanding curated collection of items. Beautiful jewelry, cards, gifts, Boston/​Somerville themed items, toys, stationary, and more. Nice staff as well.
A MUST if you are ever in Davis Square. Prices are not cheap, but they are very fair for the quality of the items. Phenomenal little shop.

This is my, «It’s a beautiful day I’m going to take a walk to Davis”/“I’m bored, everyone is at the movies» store. I love this store. I wish there were more versions of Magpie closer to me in Somerville. I live on Winter Hill and there is a complete dearth of interesting shops unrelated to falafel, tacos, tacos, donuts, pizza, and more pizza. Really miss interesting, non-Gap/J.Crew/etc. shops and window shopping.
Magpie is really well curated with interesting work by local/​New England artisans and they’re the only other shop outside of Paper Source that I know of that stocks Rifle Paper Co. stationery. They also have a wonderful array of cards and it’s my go-​to place for cards when I’m not in downtown Boston (then it’s Papyrus or Paper Source).
Fantastic little shop and although a little pricey, you’re getting wonderful products. This is not mass-​produced garbage, so complaining about the price is sort of dumb. I can’t go here too often or I’d be broke, but at least all of my friends would have a steady supply of clever cards!

What a fun, whimsical, somewhat hipster store. It is a place you go to browse and end up with something cute and unique for yourself or as a gift. Hint for anybody wanting to buy me a gift! There are so many gift stores around the country but they all sell the same things, think Hallmark stores. At Magpie almost everything is unique, you won’t find it at other stores. Somebody else said it all, what an etsy store would look like. It is just around the corner from the Davis T stop, so I bought cute Davis T coasters. My Tufts hipster son always stops in to buy me a small gift before he comes home. I love it all. There is a great card selection; who doesn’t always need a unique card. Good selection of note paper. I buy it even when I don’t need it.
Most things are very reasonable, but there are some local artist items that are pricey.
I will always stop in when I am in David Square.

This is best of all of the somerville/​cambridge trinkety stores. In fact, it’s the only one I genuinely like. They have a lot of unique items as well a lot of really cool local items. Examples of recent cool purchases: a Somerville Arts Council book about Union Square restaurants and food (it’s called nibble– you should check it out), a flask with a bear on it, a map of Somerville, a wooden box with a sweet carved design, and cute magnets. See? Things for everyone. Gets particularly crowded around the holiday season, as one might expect. Shop smartly, my friends.

I love going to Magpie. If
opened a brick and mortar shop, it would look like Magpie. It’s really fun to browse around and there are items for every price point (from a couple dollars to $ 100+.) This is definitely a great place to go for gift shopping. I love that they recently expanded their food (chocolates and caramels), body products, and candle sections. They also have really cute baby items (for more visit nearby Magpie Kids), artisan jewelry, pretty cards, and lots of affordable prints.
Side note– they do mark up most (all?) Etsy vendors’ products from the price they sell them on
for. I figured this out when I noticed a bunch of products with a sticker with a higher price right over a price tag from the vender. It’s not a huge mark up and when you think of how much you would have had to pay on shipping, it doesn’t really make a difference.

I was studying in Davis Square one day when I realized I needed to get a birthday gift! guh always so last minute.
After searching for ‘gifts’ in Unilocal,I came upon Magpie. «Umm what exactly is a magpie??» At first I thought it was a pie shop haaa. no no
I walked in and fell in love with the place immediately! It’s really small and a little crowded, but it adds a little homey feel. It reminds me of the odd cute indie stores in LA with handmade items and things you won’t find anywhere else.
They have an assortment of calendars, notebooks, mugs, bags, etc.
I spent a little longer than I planned in there just looking at all the awesome stuff!
It is pretty pricey, but they carry a lot of those one of a kind things that are hard to come by in retail stores.
I was REALLY happy with my eyeglass pencil pouch purchase (yay for being an optometry student and loving anything with glasses)! and I definitely plan to come back

Great little gift shop. I’ve never been compelled to buy anything from the similar store across the street but this little place packs a punch for such a small space.
There are a great variety of things and it’s perfect for gifts (gifts for yourself as well). There are some things that are too expensive for me, but I’m always able to find something at a price I’m willing to pay.

I feel like I walked into an episode of Portlandia.
This small shop in Davis Square is unreal. So many things I will never need, but that I walk in and kind of want.
This is the internal dialogue I experienced:
You say there’s a notebook made out of a weird children’s book? Yes! Oh it’s $ 50. I guess I’ll walk out. Wait, it may be worth it. Who knows when I’ll ever get a chance to buy something this unique. Also, it’s made by a local artist. I can’t just walk out now. Fine, I’ll get it.
Point is. this store is really cute and quirky, but so overpriced. It’s completely unnecessary, yet intriguing.

Definitely one of my favorite stores in Davis. Highlights include:
— quirky and well-​priced posters
— adorable baby shower gifts
— jewelry you wish you could afford but still love to look at
— off-​color cards for every occasion
I usually come here for my weekend retail therapy — just being in this store makes me happy and I always end up with something cute for myself or someone else.

Really neat and cute little gift store in Davis Square! You can find all sorts of interesting knickknacks here. They have letter-​pressed postcards, shirts, an assortment of art prints, jewelry and even some baby gifts. If you need to find a quirky gift for that friend of yours who loves quirky gifts, be sure to stop here! :)

Letter-​pressed cards? Cute crafts? Hand-​stitched sandwich bags? Quirky gifts for all occasions? I couldn’t ask for more. Small and cozy store. All I want for Christmas is you.

When searching for crafty, indie retailers in Davis Square, you’ll undoubtedly be presented with two nearby neighboring neighbors on Highland Ave: the latecomer Davis Squared, and the big ol’ bird Magpie.
After a careful consideration of inventory, price, atmosphere and mission, this guy is Team Magpie. Definitely focused on local, handmade goods with a smidge of the Fred/​Kikkerland/​Accoutrement goodies you can find at any museum gift shop or kooky uncle’s mantle, and the selection — while more limited than D² — is definitively curated to my tastes (and therefore, other awesome people).
Final factor: Magpie has a quirky ambience that gives the slight cluttered comfort of a Grandma’s den. Don’t swing your elbows, expect to pay a premium for one-​of-​a-​kind gifts and give them 30 minutes — you’ll leave with something (s) in tow, regardless of your initial intention.

Magpie is wonderful!
I’ve found some very unique stuff here. The cards are amazing, for one. But there’s so much else it’s hard to know where to start. Strange and fantastic scrap books made out of upcycled books ranging from children’s stories to home repair manuals and cook books. Cool bags. Fun jewelry and other accessories. It’s a tiny place but if you look carefully enough you’re sure to find something lovely and one-​of-​a-​kind.

Finally made it to magpie and was pleased that I did! This store is full of cool shit that you don’t need but really, really want especially if you are a twenty-​something who wants college-​esque nostalgia without the actual college bit.
I ended up buying four coasters and they are awesome. Also a poster with beers on it. Awesome. They also had postcards that said Yes Homo. How can you not like a store like that?

I’ve passed by Magpie dozens of times over my last few years as a Somerville resident, and only just recently walked through their doors for the first time. I know this may sound silly, but based on the look of the store and title from the outside, I honestly thought it was an Italian grocery store or something like that. Boy, was I wrong!
In the spirit of supporting local artists and providing some unique and artsy gifts, Magpie delivers. They offer similar kinds of crafts and goods as found in Davis Squared down the block, but feel a bit less main stream to me, but a bit more expensive too. They had some beautiful purses that I was seriously eyeing, and adorable hedgehog coasters that I may go back and purchase. Plus, I noticed some prints from artists I like from other street festivals, like «Monkey Chow,» which is always a treat. So, if you’re in the area take a few minutes and explore the store because it is a fun space to shop in.

I love you, Magpie. You are most perfect in having quirky, adorable gifts that make me look like a superstar gift-​giver.
An excellent t-​shirt selection, handmade journals, buttons/​magnets, jewelery and more recently I noticed a pretty nice section of baby gifts. Screenprinted onesies? Adorbs!
The employees are great. They are super hip and friendly, which makes it all the easier to shop here!
