Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge

Our 7 month old boxer just returned from her first overnighter away from us at Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge. The staff were very accommodating and were very patient when I couldn’t resist calling during our puppies stay to see how she was. I appreciate Natalie going the extra mile to help us during pickup on Sunday and Dawn giving us feedback on how our puppy did during her stay. I would definitely recommend this facility and will not hesitate to take our dog back there.

We have taken our dogs to Balcom Canyon Pet Resort for boarding several times over the past 2 years. Our dogs love to stay there. Between the beautiful grounds and wonderful staff we wouldn’t consider anywhere else! They have paid special attention to our senior Austrailian Shepherd and our very busy adolescent Aussie alike. Both have always returned clean and happy. It’s very obvious that the owners and staff are knowledgable and caring dog people.

Dawn & Deanna were very caring and helped our nervous dogs during their stay. I appreciated the feedback that Dawn gave me upon pickup. I Would of given 5 stars if someone at the front desk would answer the phone, instead very often I had to leave a message and wait hours to be called back

I always board my three pups when I travel at Balcom. This past week I was out of town and when I returned, I got a call that my daughter in law had gone into labor with my new grandson. SO I needed Balcom to keep my dogs longer and they were so accomodating. I had daily communication with the staff to let me know that my babies were well taken care of. I trust them completely. So great!

I have had a few dogs who have stayed at balcom canyon pet lodge and two that are currently staying there. Here are some of the things I like about Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge…
Friendly Staff — the owners and staff at balcom canyon are always so friendly in person and over the phone and you can see that they truly care about the animals in their care.
Very clean — upon my first visit to balcom canyon, Salene (spelling) took me on a tour of the very clean and well kept facility. She showed me where my dogs would be staying and also the other yards were they would play during the day. Everything was in pristine condition and all the dogs looked very happy. Also all the buildings had air conditioning!
Rescue!!! — the Balcom canyon owners and staff are VERY supportive of dog rescue. They own rescue dogs and even rescued a mom dog who them had 7 puppies while in there care.
Accommodating — Balcom canyon is very accommodating and even took in two emergency dogs last minute!
HAPPY DOGS!!! — Every time I bring dogs back to balcom canyon and pick up dogs — they are always so happy! Zar and Tyson who are currently staying at balcom canyon LOVE the staff and are so excited to see them… Just look at the picture of them happily running the grounds of balcom canyon.

My two dogs spent 6 weeks there and balcom Canyon was fabulous at letting me know how my dogs were doing and sent me videos. They came out happy and clean (had them bathed) and very healthy!!! I VERY HIGHLY recommend them for your dogs!

We have been using Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge for 16 years. They are outstanding. Staff is friendly, personable, eager to assist in any way. The facility is clean, grounds manicured and our dogs get really excited every time we turn on to Balcom Canyon Road because they know they are going to «camp.» — Doug O.

The owners and the entire staff at Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge are so friendly, professional, accommodating and just adore animals. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and well maintained. The kennels are clean and can be made to be exposed or closed to the outdoors. Boarding for small dogs is like a home environment. I loved the fact that there is a caretaker that lives on the property as well to be there for them if/​when needed. I was there in May expecting the weather to be extremely hot, but it was just perfect with a light breeze. The furry clients all seem very happy, well cared for and loved. My rescue dog Chuy LOVED it there and the staff who gave him lots of attention and TLC… THANK YOU BALCOM FAMILY SO MUCH FOR THAT!!! You all are the best and would highly recommend you to friends, family and rescues!

I heard from my friend Larry that the Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge was a good place to bring my doggies if I am looking for a place to board them for a few weeks or a few nights. I was in the Santa Paula area so I decided to check it out on my way back over the hill to Camarillo.
This place is awesome! It is huge and has a ton of trees. I felt very peaceful there and that is exactly how I would like my doggies to feel. I actually have a vacation coming up here in a few months and this is going to be where I bring them and I know they will be taken care of and exercised.
There is plenty of parking out front and in fact the parking lot is a huge dirt lot. The front office is very modern and clean (just like the grounds) and I got a good overall vibe when I was talking to the employees here. I actually had my quad copter and go pro with me so I took a couple of aerial pics and video while I was here.

DO NOT BOARD HERE. My dog was a beautiful husky shepherd with a beautiful nose and always a clean coat with a bath regularly. He loved to jump and play and now that I have him back his nose is ruined, his fur is disgusting, and now he is scared as If he was beaten, when I go to pet my dog it was as if he was hit so many times he doesn’t want to be pet anymore, he doesn’t jump for his treats and he seemed as if he hadn’t eaten in 2 days or more and thirsty. Staff do not care about you’re pet. If you want problems with you’re pet and have to pay more than just a kennel and have a vet look at them take you’re chance. Good luck. Also when i confronted the person who’s parents are the owners I know this person is careless also said no bad things have been written about the place. Take my review seriously. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE, Happy new year everyone I hope this wont be the same experience for you

First and last time dealing with these people. I boarded my dog here for 3 weeks during my wedding and honeymoon. The setting is nice and gives the impression of the dogs having ample space to run and play. Sadly this is not the case at all. I have a Pit Mix who went into this shelter 70 lbs. of muscle and little to no fat. Sadly after the 3 weeks when I picked him up he lost a good 15 pounds and came home super skinny. I was nervious leaving him in my backyard after as fears of neighbors thinking I starve my dog. I also paid to have him bathed upon pickup and was told he would be ready after 2. When I was driving home I noticed he was all dirty and when I called back to figure out what was going on I was told he was bathed in the morning and they would credit me back my money for the bath. It takes 1 – 2 weeks for this credit to appear. Upon further questioning about why my dog looks so skinny it was after excuses I was told that oh he had trouble eating the first 3 days. Thats a lie because he would have had 19 good days of eating so its either they are not feeding the dogs enough or something else is going on. I was also told because I run my dog 12 – 15 miles a week that because he is used to so much exercise they only take the dogs on a very short walk around the yard so it could be a lack of exercise. My dog is better now and seems to have been scared straight as he listens a lot better now.
I gave Balcom 2 stars because after me calling back they did help. After my phone call they sent a van to my house to pickup my dog the next day to take him to the vet and make sure there is nothing wrong with him. I guess I had hire exspectation as I thought my dog would have had more exercise than most kennels given the ranch like setting in the canyon. For a few dollars more the Barkley might be the better option.

I have a rescue JRT that can’t stay home alone for long. The last time I boarded her at the vets office. When I picked her up… she was angry, growling, stressed, air licking, shedding, chewing on herself and smelly. I doubt they ever let her out once, because they were «afraid» of her. (she’s had a tough life, and growls if you pick her up… but never snaps). Cost a fortune, they lost her records, and then went out of business. This time, took her to Balcom. Picked her up after a 10 day stay, and I almost think she was hoping she could stay a few more days. She’s clean, happy, running around like a puppy. I’d bring her back here next time we leave without question… even if it’s just for a couple of days. I actually feel bad our «good» dog had to stay home with a sitter… he missed out on good times!

Wonderful. I was so happy with the pet lodge staff. The staff treated My Airedale puppy and my Yorkie like they would their own pets. Lots of hugs and cuddles. I highly recommend.

Nice setting, unique garage door arrangement to close kennels at night.
Unfortunately, they close Friday evening at 6 pm and do not reopen until Monday morning. I can’t get back there until after 6 on Friday night, which means my dogs would be trapped in the kennel until Monday morning. No, thank you! And anyone leaving on Monday morning would have to drop their dogs off on Friday instead of Sunday evening. Sorry, this doesn’t fly with me.

My dachshunds, Lilli and Cliff, LOVE this place! I can’t even utter the words «doggie camp» until we’re actually loading the car. Lilli runs around grabbing toys/​going nutso and Cliff whines at me until we’re on our way. When we arrive, I’m lucky if I get a good-​bye swish of Lilli’s tail; they literally drag the handler through the gate and off to the play yard. Kinda «see ya, Mom; don’t let the doorknob hit ya!»
They love the staff and the campus is beautiful. There’s plenty of outdoor playtime — they love the interaction with the other dogs. Cindy the trainer is excellent as well. According to Lilli & Cliff, she learns fast — for a human. And the prices are really reasonable.

After many years of good experiences at Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge our last time was troubled with inexcusable service. I left my two labs for 17 days. I was assured they would be kept together When we picked them up I was told they were separated because one was on a special diet. There was absolutely no reason to keep them apart. They assuredf me they were me next to each other and could touch noses through the fence. After getting them home one had Two puncture wound on her noise and the other’s noise was ask scratched up. Both had kennel cough. I called and asked what happened and was told they had no idea and to call the manager. I called her the no next day and she had no idea and would check into it. I’ve never heard from her. Both dogs needed antibiotics for the coughs and puncture wound. Never again will I leave a pet there. It’ll be Barley Pet Hotel or a pet sitter. Balcom has beautiful ground but terrible carr and follow up.

WE have been recommended by BCPL dog and cat owners over these past 15 years in the area, and everyone always raves about the care received, the cleanliness, the cost, and of course the gorgeous grounds. This past year our dog and our parents’ dog were boarded; both experiences were impeccable. I am a fairly discriminating consumer and so can vouch for the safety and excellent care of this wonderful kennel. Our dogs always come back happy, healthy, and it doesn’t make us go broke to have them well-​takened-​care of.

After using this facility for many years with no complaints, we found it starting to go downhill in 2008. A noticeable drop in the quality of attention to our dogs from past uses. The final straw was an extended stay summer of 2009. 3 dogs boarded for a week. Picked them up to find bedding literally soaked and reeking of urine, dogs filthy, toys lost, staff totally disinterested. We assume a change in ownership occurred a year or more ago. Simply not the place it once was. We will never board dogs here again.

Gorgeous half-​outdoor pet lodge nestled way up in the rolling hills of Somis. Friendly staff, nice facilities and great service.
