What a cool place! I read about it in The Post, and being a plant lover who had the day off, I had to check it out. There are 10 humidity/temp controlled rooms that house amazing specimens, such as orchids from $ 10 to $ 1,000+, and 200 year old sago palms for $ 500. Unlike other nurseries in the state, Maplethorpe has virtually every type of orchid in existence, and that’s pretty damn impressive! The caretaker, Frank Stagi, was very informative and friendly, even funny at times, and helped us pick out a beautiful Moth Orchid for only $ 12! They have banana and papaya trees also, as well as the spectacular flowering tree cactus, and the prices are reasonable. We ended up spending over an hour there talking with Frank and admiring the orchids, I wish I could buy everything there! If you’re looking to buy or just check out some exotic and beautiful plants, Maplethorpe Orchids is the way to go, I’m stoked to have found this place! Best of all, they’re local orchids, unlike the ones at Trader Joe’s and elsewhere that are usually from other countries. I actually feel good about spending money there, it’s important that we all make an effort to support local business!!!
