History
Established in 1977.
In 1925 Overisel Feed and Lumber Co. was founded by John Voorhorst in Overisel, Michigan, which is a small community about four miles south-west of Holland. Elvin Slenk started working for Overisel Feed and Lumber Co. as a bookkeeper and sales/designer in 1953. Five years later Gord Zuverink joined him in sales and design. That same year the original owner retired.
In 1960, Elvin Slenk and Gord Zuverink took the bold step of purchasing the lumberyard part of the business and changed the name to Overisel Lumber Company. Five years later Elvin and Gord moved the company from Overisel to Holland on 32nd Street. Elvin bought out his partner, Gord, in 1980 to become sole owner of Overisel Lumber Company.
We opened our store in South Haven in 1974. Overisel Kitchen & Bath Center opened its doors for business in 1977. Then we expanded our company by purchasing a store in Douglas in 1985 on Chestnut Street. We’re proud to have roots in so much of beautiful southwestern Michigan.
Meet the Business Owner
Greg S.
Business Owner
Greg Slenk is an owner and manager at Overisel Lumber. At age 14 he started working for his dad, Elvin, painting the buildings and unloading railroad boxcars. Greg attended Holland High School and later went to Hope College to receive degrees in mathematics and education. Following three years of teaching in South Dakota and Wisconsin on Indian Reservations, he returned to work full time at Overisel in 1980.
Greg has a wife, Jeannie, daughter Katie who works at our kitchen center, and son Lee. Outside of work he loves spending time on the water, whether it’s on the boat or the beach. He also loves golfing and traveling in his spare time.
Throughout his career at Overisel Lumber, Greg has managed all three stores in turn. His favorite part of his job is working with professional builders. «There’s nothing I like better than to get creative and solve problems with our builders,» shares Greg. «It’s great to know that we’re creating something that will house a family for years to come.»
