Pop On Over Cafe

I don’t understand all the great reviews about the food in this place. I went with my wife and kids and tried all the dishes people said were good… and they were all just ok.
The service was good, the music was fantastic, but I have definitely experienced much better food in this area.

We were really excited to try this but it is no longer there. The phone is disconnected and the website is gone. Sad for us; we’ll never get to try the popovers!

First time here for lunch. It’s weirdly retro in here and they got all these pictures in here with signatures to portray some sort of history? Whatever, I’ll vibe with it cause they got matching music playing in the background
The service was pretty slow for the lunch hour but that was the general concensus among me and my friends — that we would be waiting.
I got the Reuben and it was way worth the wait. The entire sandwich was as tall as my first but about ¹⁄₃ of the volume compressed down cause the sandwich was so lightweight and flaky. I’ve had plenty of Reuben’s and they all differ based on sauce and bread. And this place did it right.
Composed of sauerkraut, cheese, sauce and meat, this $ 8 sandwich was well worth the wait.

My sister and I wandered in when we got the times wrong for the food truck round up at Mulligans. We needed a place to eat and this was the closest restaurant. I really enjoyed my experience here! I ordered the mac and cheese and it was really tasty and filling. The portion was generous for the price and it came with a popover. The service was 5 stars! The employee working when we visited was very helpful, attentive, and patient with our rambunctious kids.

Hours are not correct. They are closed on Friday’s. Why would you not be open on Friday’s?

The food here is amazing! We ordered the pulled pork popover, turkey popover, and mac n cheese. The bread for the popover is really good. Highly recommend this place!

Got the turkey pop over: surprisingly delicious, filling, and not your typical processed deli meat. Pulled turkey on a traditional light & flaky pop over bread. Sort of a tucked location but had good service and cute décor. Free WiFi

Pros:
1. I enjoy watching my pizza crust being tossed, I don’t know why but I do:)
2. Very friendly staff.
3. Styrofoam cups for fountain soda. And yes I know they aren’t environmentally friendly. My ice doesn’t melt as much so my coke tastes like coke instead of coke water.
4. Fast service: 7 minutes for a made to order calzone.
5. Canned mushrooms! I’m not a fan of fresh ones!
6. Huge portion! See pic
7. Music-​great selection and not too loud!
8. Front of the house was clean.
Cons:
1. Deli cases are virtually empty, see pics. If they aren’t going to be stocked, they should be removed.
2. I don’t like people touching my fountain drink lid. The system they have for lid storage forces you to touch the bottom of the next persons lid.
3. Female worker rubbed her nose with the palm of her hand and then went back to making a sandwich.
She continually drank her coffee and rubbed her face without washing her hands.
4. No gloves.
5. Behind the counter could use a good cleaning.
6. Too many mushrooms and not enough ham or cheese. Probably related to the cost of each but too many mushrooms are overpowering.
The food overall was ok. I wouldn’t drive out of my way to eat here again but if I was in the area the food is satisfying enough I would come again. However, the sanitation practices of the female worker, drink lid storage, and lack of gloves will keep me from ever coming back. And did I mention the very long hair of the female employee that was pulled FORWARD over her shoulder and hanging down in front of her. If she had made my food instead of the male I would not have eaten it.
Customer service and adequate tasting food are the reason for the 2 stars.

The staff was friendly and very helpful in explaining the menu.
I had the New York style pepperoni pizza and it was pretty good, nothing out of this world, but tasty all the same.
I also tried a cinnamon and sugar pop over. It was pretty authentic and very tasty. You can also get pop overs filled with sandwich stuff.
The prices are pretty reasonable as well. 6 or 7 bucks for lunch.
It was a cozy little restaurant and I’ll definitely come back and try some more stuff.

Great place to eat. Had the Turkey Popeich and it was moist and the bread was amazing. Everything hand made. The owner seems really cool and had records playing of the beetles. Great place to eat. Everything is clean including the bathroom.

I would say more pizza/​sandwich shop.
With that said, my hunger was satisfied after I ate my sandwich. I did have some complaints though. I ordered a pop over Rueben. I’ve never had any kind of pop over sandwich so I wasn’t able to pre-​qualify my selection. If I did it over, I would order a sandwich that had less wet elements because the bread does not hold up. It was a mess, just falling apart everywhere. Where the mustard touched the bread, it turned to a soup like consistency. I will say, however, that the meat was nice and the crust of the pop over was appealing where it wasn’t melting away.
I got a 4oz portion cup of potato salad with some pretty firm potatoes. Nothing special. Someone else got a devilled egg (level 4) and we all took turns burning our faces off. We had a good time, but I don’t feel the urge to return anytime soon.
They also have pizza, which smelled nice, but we didn’t order any.

The Popover sandwiches are packed with delicious meat & cheese & mayo; you can tell the bread is baked fresh, and it is light & crispy & delicious; and the house-​cured meats are amazing! There are many places around Salt Lake where you can get pastrami (pastrami by itself, pastrami on burgers, pastrami on everything). The pastrami I got on my popover sandwich was perhaps the best I have eaten in all my days. (Also, it’s worth noting in my pastrami reviewing, that I’m mostly vegetarian, by which I mean to say that this meat was especially good despite my limited experience. Furthermore, I would go back to this restaurant for veggie options – many cheese a/​o vegetarian options in calzones, pizzas, sandwiches.
Only minor criticisms, which may been based on the day I visited:
–a bit too much mayo; I’ll ask for ‘light mayo’ on my next visit
–deviled eggs maybe a bit over-​hyped (in that the flavor didn’t do too much for me); I did ask for 4 out of 5 heat level, so it was basically inedible because of the heat, but I did my damndest nonetheless
Can’t wait to try Pop on Over Café again the next time I’m in out near Draper… which unfortunately will not be for quite a while.

Finding decent pizza in Utah is like finding a Jewish synagogue in Provo. Sure they may be there, but they’re not easy to find. We hit the jackpot today by stumbling into the Pop on Over Café.
Not only was the pizza incredible. So good. Great crust. Great sauce. The staff was friendly, helpful and fun to interact with. To top it off, there are crates full of classic vinyl to dig thru and play like your own private juke box.
I’ve been waiting for a place like this for years. Do yourself a favor and get on over and try the best damn pizza in Utah!

OK, first the bad, well theres … nope, I got NOTHING, this place is perfect!!!
Now the good, nay the great! When you walk in the door you will immediately feel at home, Johnny the owner and his wife will greet you and answer any questions that you may have about the menu and then it is up to you.
My wife, our daughter, and I sampled as much as we could in one visit and EVERYTHING was awesome!!!
For starters you have to try the Deviled Eggs, you can get them regular or spicy, tried them both and loved them both.
My wife ordered a Turkey Sandwich on the Popwhich Rolls, my daughter ordered the Turkey Sandwich on the Popwich Roll as well but she added Avocado, and I ordered the Mac Over 4 Cheeses and everything that we ordered just blew us away!
My daughter said the avocado was the freshest she has ever had, both my wife and daughter commented on the fresh, chunks of turkey on the Popwich, none of the sliced, processed sandwich meat you get at most places, this was fresh like making a turkey sandwich at home the day after thanksgiving!!! Oh ya, the Popwich Rolls are so freaking good, they are light and flakey and delicious.
Oh and the Mac Over 4 Cheeses was only the best Mac and Cheese that I have ever had.
After that we tried a pizza and as you might expect from the theme of this review it was great, so fresh, such good flavor. Better then the Pie and tied with Este Pizza for the best pizza in Salt Lake.
You will notice that there are records everywhere when you walk in the door, yes vinyl just like the good old days, there is also a turntable in the back and if you find an album you want to listen to you put it on the turntable and drift back in time.
I will be the Duke of the Pop on Over Café so if you swing by and there is a guy sitting close to the turntable with a big smile on his face that would be me, Pop on Over and say hi!
This is as good as it gets, this is a locally owned family joint that must be visited often before the world becomes nothing but cookie cutter chain restaurants that all taste the same.
Great food, CHECK … Family owned, CHECK … Great atmosphere, CHECK!!!

This place was pretty disappointing considering the rating. It had a couple hits, but just as many misses. First, the good: I thought the pop overs were really good. Same goes for the spicy deviled eggs. The youngsters had a pizza and I thought that was pretty good too; it had tasty cheese and the crust had a nice chewy/​crispy ratio.
Now, the bad: I thought the two sandwiches that we tried were not good at all. The Philly was way too messy, watery (the bottom of it was really soggy), and it had absolutely no flavor… at all. It was pretty bad. The Reuben wasn’t much better. While the meat was better than the Philly meat, the sauerkraut had huge chunks in it, which was weird, and overall, the flavor was pretty blah. To make matters worse, the sides were no better. My broccoli salad was dry and my wife indicated her pasta salad was bland.
Even the chocolate-​covered bacon was a little off. The space is unique and inviting in its own way but the food just didn’t make me want to return. Perhaps I’m missing something…

This is a small little place tucked away in the back of a bunch of businesses. The walls are lined with album covers and pictures of famous people.
The lady that was there seemed a little bothered, but was overall pretty nice.
We got a turkey popwich and a reuben popwich with potato salad, and deviled eggs. We also splurged and got a cinnamon sugar popover.
Turkey popwich — turkey, cheese, onions, pickles, and a mustard sauce on an asiago popwich. The flavor was really good and I would definitely get it again. If you don’t like mustard though let them know because it has a lot of mustard.
Reuben — typical reuben on a popwich. The cole slaw was more like steamed cabbage which I didn’t care for but my husband liked it.
Potato salad — small cup (like the ones you put sauces in) of very bland potato salad that was room temperature
Deviled eggs — room temperature, flavorless eggs. It seemed that they had been made a couple days earlier and had been sitting in the display case for quite a while.
Cinnamon sugar popover — it really tastes like a german pancake with butter, cinnamon and sugar goodness.
I would come back and get the turkey popwich and the cinnamon sugar popover. The other things I could do without.

Stopped by today because of the reviews that I read on Unilocal.I’m happy that I did. Finding quality local places to eat seems to be much more of a challenge here in SLC then in Tucson where I moved from. The pop overs smelled wonderful, alas I did not try them but they look delicious. I had deviled eggs and a broccoli salad. It was wonderful and the right amount of food. The atmosphere is good and the staff is friendly. I might even go back again today.

My brother in-​law said this place was tasty but «tasty» does not even come close to doing this place justice. WoW! Well done guys… well done! I love the uniqueness and small deli feel.
Went with a Pop-​wich: Roasted Turkey, bacon, avocado with swiss cheese on the asiago popover. Yummy! For dessert our table shared the cinnamon sugar popover honestly i wanted to eat the whole thing myself it was that good!
Needless to say the prices are very reasonable, the ambiance is great and the food was AMAZING! This place will definitely be a must every time i come into town.

Words cannot express how much I love this place, but I’ll try anyway.
POC is a small deli-​style restaurant with a heart of gold. Owners Johnny and Shaleen have crafted a number of unique and tasty spins on traditional deli/​diner fare. Turkey mac & cheese, green chili lasagna, pop-​wich sandwiches, spicy deviled eggs… there is so much to love here. To top it off (literally and figuratively), Johnny makes his own chili sauces. His green chili salsa is 50 cents extra, but adding it to your Pop-​wich is worth every penny – it is to die for. I love it so much, in fact, that I’d consider bathing in it. He uses genuine Hatch chilis in his recipes, and they are legendary for a reason.
The only downside is the location. Because it is off the road a bit, it can be very tricky to find. The first time I came here, I almost left thinking they had closed down. The building next door also has a Suite 110 and it was vacant; as I was driving around the building on my way out, I miraculously happened to glance over and saw POC in the other building. Thank goodness! Because of this, I don’t try and tell people where this place is – I bring them here with me for their first visit.
This is a great, great place.
