Lake Tahoe Community College

This college is the best! So much better then the giant community college I went to previously, everybody was so helpful for me to get back into school! The art program is awesome, as well as the wilderness ed classes! So fun and unique!

This school is small, cheap, and has a lot of choies. I like it, I like going here. The Culinary program was fun too. the libarary has good resources. the registration calculation are easy to do even on paper. those are my pros
My cons in the other hand; this is why i rated a 3
the counselor are different always, there’s always that person who doesn’t like their job. They willing to help, they try not to make a big deal about things, but it’s frustrating that they acturally cancel your online payments, I have to go to the administration to register for classes every quater. It’s best to register on time, even if you try to hold your classes until you can pay.
You have to get along with people too, or they become enimies. lol
if your out of state, don’t bother too much all you need is a CA drivers license or CA house lease. Otherwise your in dept.

per Tara T.‘s review, the school is small and that has advantages. my first experience was ok, but just ok. the administration is inefficient, bureaucratic and slothful. the person i talked to at the admissions and records office kept saying, «I really need to leave now», «I really need to go». this was midafternoon, mind you, and not anywhere near the office’s closing time. good luck trying to enroll yourself. it’s been many, many years since i enrolled and attended university, but i remember at that time, the school WANTED students to be able to enroll. as other reviewers note, LTCC is cheap, but you’ll get what you pay for.

LTCC is a small, intimate school. You have the opportunity to develop relationships with the faculty and really get the most out of your learning experience. Classes are dirt cheap for California residents, and the college has discounted rates for students from the ‘Nevada side’. Eclectic list of courses offered — almost anything you could imagine, from belly dancing to sushi making to wilderness survival.
That being said, budget restraints and poor planning on the administration’s part are making this a slightly challenging school to attend if you are interested in transferring to a four year institution. In the process of signing up for the Winter 2012 quarter alone, I have had:
–multiple hellish experiences involving the financial aide office
–a meeting with a guidance counselor that was absolutely … useless
–a class canceled due to lack of instructor
Which leaves one very flustered, discouraged wombat sitting on LTCC’s front lawn.
Don’t get me wrong; I love attending LTCC and I get that students across the world are waging battles with their respective financial aide offices. I get that some counselors won’t be a good mesh for my personality (But telling me that the school I want to transfer to is unrealistic when I have a 4.0 and a bad ass list of extra circulars AND I’m a single mommy? Was LAME. SAUCE.)
But really? Why list a class if you don’t have an instructor for it? C’mon guys — if you don’t have someone lined up before the book of classes goes to print, you know you’re probably not going to find someone who’d rather be stuck inside teaching a class instead of playing on the mountain). Double lame sauce points for it being a required class for students who want to transfer. Thankfully there was another class I needed to take that transfers AND had the same amount of credits, or I would have gotten screwed in the financial anus… I mean, aide department.
Overall, I really love the intimate nature of this school, and it pains me to give it a less than stellar review. If the Administration can get their shiznit together, and the Financial Aide office gets organized, I’ll happily come back and write an update. Until then, I’ll keep fighting with Y’all to get the classes I need. (And someday? When I’ve got my degree from Berkeley? I’m going to bring it back and wave it in that counselor’s face)

I live in the bay area but have taken as many online classes here as possible. All I can say is, I really wish I lived closer– I want to take all the awesome classes only Tahoe can provide in person– white water rafting, hiking, it sounds amazing! The Etudes format is my favorite and most user friendly interface I’ve used for online classes and the teachers are spectacular. What I like most about the online classes is that it can be a week before the quarter starts and there is still room for people to join the class. Here in the bay area all of the community colleges fill up before people with last priority even have a chance. Great School!

you get to live in lake tahoe, classes are cheap for CA residents and the class schedule is diverse and fun: i’ve taken sushi making, wine tasting, indoor soccer, fire dancing! oh and the parking is free!
the only downside is that you may get stuck and never want to transfer out of Lake Tahoe…

So I’m not a full time student here, nor have I ever been. But as a wannabe autodidact I’ve found numerous ‘continuing ed’ classes that make this the best alternative to a Learning Annex here. Whether it’s spin classes, ballroom dancing or wine tasting, intro to pastry baking, beginning ceramics or photoshop, or the annual Intensive Spanish Language Institute, LTCC provides interesting course choices that overall are taught by knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff.
Plus, at $ 13 a unit for California residents (as of this writing), it’s an economical way to indulge your inner ‘whatever’.
