Out of the Closet Thrift Stores

WHAT: A thrift store that sells previously owned donated clothing and furniture.
PRICE RANGE: From a $ 1+, you’ll find some cool vintage pieces here. My only complaint is that this company’s price point is much higher than that of Goodwill or Salvation Army or American Veterans.
AMBIANCE: Super quiet (no music). Very drab place. You can tell there wasn’t much love put into the interior décor.
FOOD/​DRINKS: They tend not to allow it in-​store.
SERVICE: No one really helps you. There’s always someone unloading freshly donated items into the store and there’s one person at the cash register. Don’t expect any real customer service besides their regular job functions.
BATHROOMS: Never used it and not sure if it’s available to the public.
PARKING: There’s a small business parking lot beside it which is usually a hit or miss. You can always find free street parking, though!
MY 2-​CENTS: It’s a hit or miss if you find some noteworthy brand name pieces, but for the most part, the stuff they carry isn’t all that great. It’s a thrift store, so you’re going to have to go through the effort of finding those one-​of-​a-​kind items that would appeal to you. Again, the selection isn’t all that great at this location.

Very good service. The deals and things you find here are amazing! A lot of good books and great brand name pieces. Come here and you will know what I mean.

Finally… an ugly X-​Mas sweater vest for my husband… close enough. Hey and I didn’t get anything for myself here. Don’t think that I didn’t try though. It’s like a treasure hunt… sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you come up empty.

I have been to most of the OTC in California, but this is my favorite! Talk about a total client experience! I was welcomed as soon as I walked in. I immediately headed over to the book section of the store and I found myself immediately drawn to the wide variety of books they had in stock. Before I knew it I had more than than my hands and arms could handle. It was thanks to the kind and wonderful sales clerk Terry G, who took my books to the service checkout counter so that I could further enjoy my experience! She went above and beyond for me and deserves to be recognized for her service excellence! Thanks Terry G!

Today I came over to drop off a dish set hat I had not used in 10+ years.
I came here because I saw too many thrift stores that took good clothing and would send it overseas to have them «ragged out» into rags.
Believe it or not, many places take a huge amount of their donated clothing and do that with them. If you think grandma’s heirloom dress is going to some fortunate person, think again.
So I came here and was assured that the clothing here does not get discarded. Sorry, but I saw completely good clothing in the dumpster.
Many even had a tag on them.
What about giving it to a charity that gives clothing to the homeless?
This charity has become the problem of what it was supposed to remedy.
Clothing for the needy and unfortunate, right?
Then how about giving the thrown out clothing to charities where people are without clothes? Skid Row maybe?
This charity obviously has too much, that they resort to throwing good clothes out.
My wife and I were just disgusted at what we saw.
I will not give anything here again.

This is one of those thrift stores where you really have to DIG through a lot of junk to find something good. There is a lot of clothes rack that aren’t really organized in any particular fashion so everything is really random. I can get lost in the used book section for DAYS!

My friend and I went thrift shopping and this was the first place we went to. At the end of the day, this was the only thrift store I would come back to out of all of the other ones we went to. I like how they have racks for new arrivals.

Did you know you can bargain even at a thrift store? I know you’re thinking, «How cheap can you get? You’re at a thrift store!!!» And the proceeds go to a good cause, too, I believe.
I saw this gorgeous sequined Sean Collection dress for $ 45. Think Miss USA or prom dress, I had no idea where I would wear this dress to. I didn’t even try the dress on and just asked the nice Asian man with the tattoo sleeves at the cash register if I could have it for $ 20. I had a pair of shoes in hand and he let me have it all for $ 30!
Thank goodness the dress fit. Sometimes you’ll have to put your guesstimation skills to use. There was a creeper in the store so I didn’t want to try it on there, yikes!
They have sales like they do at Goodwill/​Salvation Army, with 50% off certain color tags that change by the day. There’s a $ 1 rack, too.
Feeling cheap, yet glamorous, now off to find a ball!

Quality, name brand, & almost new items — one of the better stores.
I like this store because it’s organized and I can always find the name brand that I wear in my size in what appears to me to be a brand new state. Most of the time I’ll pay $ 6-​$ 11 for exactly what I’d buy at the mall for $ 49. I’ve even purchased things with the tags still on them. Good selection of books and movies ($ 1-​$ 2). Huge selection of clothes. Occassionally you can find a special piece of furniture or jewelry or kitchen ware. Parking is limited and pretty tight in the little parking alley next to the side entrance.
They get new items in frequently from neighboring high end areas… so it’s not just the typical junky «I’m sick of looking at this stuff — donate it» goods. It’s a treasure hunt. If I didn’t always find something great, I wouldn’t keep coming back!

If you are too lazy or hard pressed on time to have a yard sale just drop your stuff off here for a tax write off! ;) I’ve always like Out of the Closet Thrift store not only for their clever name but that they benefit the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. This whole set up is a win-​win, you get more closet space and they provide a valuable service to the community.
Thrift stores are perfect to challenge the imagination in how you can re-​purpose items. I admire what some people can do with just $ 1 and some sewing skills like:

This store has a large layout and it’s sections are organized and well laid out. There is a section for most things regarding apparel and then more. The books and furniture section seems to grow larger every time I come here.
I came here one time a little before they were closing to dropping off a couple boxes of stuff and saw a few freegans diving already. Don’t know if they are regulars but if that’s your plan on diving here you might have some competition. ;)

This used to be my favorite Out of The Closet, but sadly, no more. I have been buying books here for like 8 years and little by little the prices have been going up. Today, I was finding 5 year old paperbacks for $ 5.75 each. Not 1^st editions. Just plain books.
I commented to the cashier and he was totally snotty. Said nothing he could do about it. Not his job. The manager set the prices. I could talk to him. No, he would not pass on my comment. That is the price the manager wants.
Well OK, but out of my range for used paperbooks. I would prefer to support OOTC but will have to go to Goodwill from now on. It’s a shame!
