This store consistently has shoddy customer service, whether in lack of helpfulness or professionalism, particularly in the men’s department(I help my guy friends shop). It seems that while employees might have a dress code, it does not include proper hygiene. There is an employee who routinely has greasy, unkempt hair, unruly beard and wears wrinkled clothing. He looks like a hipster who rolled out of bed for work. For men, the clothing selection is decent for basic staples like shirts and denim. I do not care for the clothing selection for women other than socks. The floors look like they aren’t routinely vacuumed since I noticed it’s covered in shirt pins in the men’s section first thing in the morning. Overall it has a forlorn vibe, because they generally don’t seem very busy and the news about them is never bright. I hope they can turn things around.

I’m super confused by JCPenney as a whole — specifically, their pricing structure puzzles me. There are always these signs that say«If something is $ 14.99 it’s actually $ 10.99; if something is $ 18.99 it’s actually $ 15.99; if something is $ 24.99 it’s actually $ 21.99» and so forth, and so on. Why not just pick ONE price(like the lower one) and stick to it? You’re not fooling the smart consumer — I don’t think I’m getting some deal by this pricing. Also… more often than not I find that the online pricing is insanely cheaper than the in-store options. The jeans my significant other often gets from here, are $ 20 to $ 30 cheaper on the website and have more color options. How and why is that? The entire structure here is crazy! But what really irks me about THIS particular JCPenney in South Portland, ME is how I’m constantly underwhelmed by their customer service. Whenever I need an employee… they’re nowhere to be found. Whenever I don’t need an employee(and maybe even some privacy), they seem to swam and then linger nearby too long. Example? My s.o. whacked his hand on the VERY sharp bench inside the dressing room. He was free bleeding from his knuckles and all we needed was ONE employee — of which there had been many moments before just kind of watching him go in and out of the room as he tried on pants — to help us with a bandaid or paper towel. And just recently, we wanted to purchase a pair of shoes. My s.o. had received a $ 20 coupon off from his purchase and asked if we could use them on the shoes I was in line to purchase. The two ladies at the sales desk said we could the next day when the coupon was valid. We then asked if they would hold on to the shoes(because there was only one more pair in the size I needed) for us so we could come back the next day to buy them with the $ 20 off coupon they had just given us(sorry for the repetition, but I want to stress the fact that we did ask these two women MULTIPLETIMES if the coupon really did apply to the shoes — because it seemed to good to be true — and they reassured us MULTIPLETIMES that it did). So we went out of our way to come back the next day to buy the shoes we had been promised the $ 20 off coupon applied to. They said no. «The coupon doesn’t apply to these shoes,» they said. When we reminded them that we were in yesterday — when they told us many, man times that the coupon did apply to the shoes — they shrugged us off and said it wasn’t. Exceptional customer service right there. Anyway — I would suggest avoiding JCPenney. Between the pricing structure, the lack of product availability in store, and the tremendously horrific customer service… there are better places to get your Arizona Jeans.
