Isabel is always very friendly. Dr Eng remembers me every time I come in and remembers everything we spoke about from the last visit. It is a very welcoming feeling and I will continue to go here for as long as I live in the Bay Area.

I’m very satisfied with the services we (my family) received with Dr Eng and his staff, Isabelle. The team is very helpful and very patient with us trying different glasses and frames. Great selection, good pricing and perfect fitting glasses. Dr. Eng thoroughness with his exam is just great.

I’m pretty blind (I hate to admit). I’ve been wearing glasses since the age of 6 and contacts since the age of 16. Crazy right? I’ve been through numbers of optometrist. Some of them were great, some of them weren’t. Now that I live in the Daly City area, my mission was to find an optometrist who was patient and thorough. Dr. Eng is seriously THE best doctor ever! I came in two weeks ago for a yearly eye exam and totally forgot to bring my contacts prescription from a different doctor. He was so kind enough to let me come back today to continue our exam and didn’t charge me another co-​pay. Unbelievable! He is honestly the most understanding doctor ever.
My prescription for my glasses did not go up much and Dr Eng recommended to just skip buying another pair of glasses. The axis prescription for my contacts changed slightly and he said that is more important for me to spend money on because axis that are out of alignment causes the contacts to not sit right in your eyes. He ordered me some trial lenses to try before I make a huge commitment to spend a fortune on the dailies disposable. I highly recommend everyone to see Dr. Eng because he genuinely cares about his patient and not about his wallet.

I found Dr. Eng through Unilocal over a year ago and went with my husband for our yearly eye exams. We both had a pleasant experience during our individual eye exams, which were thorough but not exhausting. The way Dr. Eng has you go through your routine choices (1 vs. 2 /​A vs. B) is actually very affirming. He makes you feel like, of course, the option you chose is the «correct» one, whereas I’ve had optometrists who made me question my choice and spiral into confusion over whether I’m completely blind or making up fuzziness in my head. I appreciate the time he sets aside at the end of our exams to answer any questions we may have. I’ve asked him about different kinds of contacts, contacts vs. glasses, lasik, vision during pregnancy, etc. Dr. Eng’s answers are usually pretty helpful.
Last year, I got a new pair of glasses. Although the frame selection looks limited, they have something for everyone. I was able to narrow down my options to 4 frames that were trendy and stylish. I ended up with Kate Spade black frames with gold accents in a slightly oversized cat-​eye influenced design. And I paid way less for them than any time I went to the optometrist with my parents back home in LA. This year, I discussed contact lens options with Dr. Eng. Since I wear contacts rarely (weekends and special events), we decided to go with 1-​day disposables. I didn’t know that there were special moist 1-​day options for astigmatism! But, they do exist! And a 60-​pack should be plenty for a year for me, for only about $ 20 out of pocket.
I always appreciate how the staff is able to pull up my vision insurance coverage immediately when I call to make an appointment, so we know ahead of time what we’ll be able to get during our next visit. I’m always in and out faster than I expect. I recommended Dr. Eng to my coworkers, since he’s in-​network for our vision coverage, and he’s a great optometrist find for the South SF area. Coin-​metered street parking can be a little annoying, but come prepared with a few quarters, and you’ll be fine.

My family of 4 have been seeing Dr. Eng for over 3-​yrs. He is attentive, professional and reasonably priced. Staffers Liz and Isabella are super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about their products. Glasses are usually done within 8 – 10 business days and he has Saturday appointments. Smaller shop means smaller inventory but we’re always happy with the frame selections we find there.

I have been wearing glasses/​contacts since I was 12 and have been to many optometrists throughout the years. Dr. Eng is the most thorough and patient of them all.
He actually asked questions to understand the history of my prescriptions before he started. He took his time to do the tests, and over all just made me feel very comfortable and well taken care of. He explained the details of the prescription and was very patient with my questions.
Calling in to make the appointment was quick and easy. I got the annual exam for my contacts prescription as well as getting fitted for a pair of new glasses since my last pair was more than 4 years old.
Dr Eng even personally helped me in picking out a pair of glasses.
The staff explained to me what is covered in my insurance and they are not pushy at all about additional, unnecessary purchases.
Over all I would say this is probably the most pleasant optometrist visit I have ever had.

I’ve gone to Dr. Eng for four years straight and have been very happy. No extra billing! The thing I like is he takes his time and makes you feel like you’re important. The exam takes about 45 minutes and he has Saturday appointments. Free trial contact lenses. His prices used to be high for contacts compared to online but now his prices are very competitive.

Dr. Eng and his staff are very professional from beginning to end. I will surely return and use them as my regular optometrist. My first visit was to have my eyes checked and they helped me order my first pair of eyeglasses.

Dr. Eng and his staff our so attentive. They go out of their way to make extra effort to ensure all of your questions are answered and that every patient has a good experience.
Dr. Eng is extremely thorough in his exams and his staff are great with fittings, orders, etc.
I have moved away from the area but continue to go to Dr. Eng each year.

After a brief affair with Lenscrafters, I decided it was time to move on to a smaller establishment that actually cares to remember my name. After lots of Unilocal research, I decided to check out Dr. Eng because of the convenience of his location to the 101 [right off the freeway my fellow San Franciscans], the ease of parking [there are free 2 hour zones around the corner], and the fact that scheduling an appointment is always convenient and hassle free [they send you annual postcards reminding you to come in].
I’ve been seeing Dr. Eng for three years now and he is awesome. He is a kind person, easygoing, and very thorough in his examinations. With previous eye doctors, I’ve been in and out in 10 minutes flat, but I spend a good 30 minutes with Dr. Eng each time. He discusses my history, checks my eyes with and without contacts on, and makes sure that the prescription is accurate several times. If you come for contacts, he allows you to test different brands before writing you a prescription. If you come for glasses, you’ll definitely find a pair that suits you. Admittedly, his office looks a bit dated, but his stock of glasses are always consistent with whatever is currently trending.
His staff is really sweet too. The receptionist always helps me find my glasses, and gives me real advice as to what does and doesn’t work.
Definitely check out Dr. Eng’s office if you’re seeking a new optometrist. You won’t regret it!

Went in for an eye exam because I needed a prescription in order to purchase more contacts. It had been 3 years since my last eye exam at a different optometrist.
Dr. Eng does a pretty thorough eye exam and asks basic questions about your eye health. He’s a really nice guy and seems to genuinely care about you, although it may seem like the exam is going a little too slow. (maybe it just seems that way if you compare to other optometrists who seem to be rushing haha). Be warned– he has older equipment… He still uses the device that puffs air in your eye to measure the pressure. Other places have the newer technology that measures it digitally. It’s not that bad though.
What’s really cool is that you don’t have to do a contact lens fitting with him if you already wear contacts and don’t have any problems with em. He’ll simply give you a trial pair, and if you’re all good, then he’ll write out your prescription which you can get filled anywhere. What an awesome guy. The receptionist is pretty nice too. She goes over your benefits with you and tells you how to best utilize them. She obviously knows what she’s doing. They have a decent display of frames to choose from… I didn’t expect that, judging by the look of the place. They don’t carry a lot of name brands/​designer frames, if that’s what you’re looking for. I agree with other Unilocalers– the carpet is hideous but it don’t matter to me. Dr. Eng is one of the kindest doctors you’ll ever come across. Go see him.

I’ve been going to Dr. Eng for almost my entire life! He has always been kind and considerate.
After moving away for college, I was scared that maybe he might’ve gotten old and had lost his touch, but surprisingly enough, not only did he remember me, but he was just as great as he was before.
Dr. Eng really cares about his patients and it shows because he always chooses very friendly and helpful people to work in his office. I’ve seen girls come and go as his secretary, and all of them have been super nice.
As for the actual eye exam, yes his room is still the same and he still uses the same old tools (the pressure air machine that always scares me), but I’m sure he uses them because they are reliable and efficient.

Great eye doctor! Dr. Eng is a cool and honest guy and his staff is awesome. He takes his time with you and makes sure everything is perfect and to your liking before you leave.

Dr. Eng and his crew were fantastic. I was a new patient this year and had concerns about my last visit with another doctor. Dr. Eng and his staff were very thorough collecting and reviewing my old records to make sure this year I was «set straight» in terms of my eye health. When I expressed interest in two types of lenses, he gave me plenty of samples and all the necessary info I would need to make a decision.
One thing I really like about this office is that they don’t push for contact lens fitting appointments. At other places if you change lenses they require you come back a week later for an appointment and charge you as such. I’ve been to places that even require this if you’ve been wearing those lenses for years but are a first time patient with them. Dr. Eng doesn’t waste your time or money. If you’re happy with the fit of your samples you can call and make your order. Done!
The place looks dated (oooooold looking carpet that needs replacing), but I’m blind anyway during most of my exam so I don’t care!
Get a full hour on the meter because he takes his time and is thorough!

I highly recommend Dr. Eng. His receptionists were extremely friendly and very helpful in helping me find a pair of glasses. Dr. Eng is a very patient, caring, and professional doctor. He gave me good advice on my contacts and I will definitely be back to see him.

I ripped my last pair of contacts a few days ago, right before a weekend getaway, so I was desperate for a quick appointment and the very least a trial pair of contacts. Dr. Eng was able to see me the day after I called, which is pretty fast. While I was waiting to see Dr. End, a man came in and told the lady at the front desk that he was having trouble getting his contact prescription filled at costco b/​c they didn’t carry the type that Dr. Eng had prescribed. Dr. Eng briefly spoke with the man and I think he wrote a prescription for another brand b/​c the man left looking very satisfied. when it was my turn to be seen Dr. Eng took some time to talk with me first, asked some detailed questions about how i felt about my glasses/​contacts and went over what my goal for the visit was. He was very nice during the exam. He didn’t ask me to read the letters on the wall, which i thought was kind of weird. Instead, he asked if I could read them and took my word (‘yes” or «no») for it. After I realized that he wasn’t going to ask me to read the letters, I took it upon myself to read them aloud anyway. I wanted to make sure that i was seeing the correct letters. Other than that, he seemed very thorough. He definitely took his time. At times it felt like the exam was taking long, but when i got out it had only been an hour which i think is standard. At the end of the appointment I got my trial pair of lenses and scheduled a follow up appointment. I haven’t purchased the contacts yet so I don’t know how much they cost. Overall, i was happy with Dr. Eng, but think I should note a few things;
— Very kind
— Genuinely concerned about the patient
— He does perform the pressure test where a machine blows air in your eyes — My last Dr. told me that there were other more modern tests for that now and did not have to do the air thing anymore
— He lifted my eyelids almost inside out to check under them. it didn’t hurt, i didn’t even realize that that’s what he was doing until he pushed them back down and i felt a small flip.
— Staff is VERY nice and accommodating
— Easy Parking, but bring quarters for the meter
— Office is a tad old and run down

I had my follow up appointment with Dr. Eng and he was as pleasant and thorough as ever! He really worked with me and my insurance company to make sure that i got exactly what I wanted. My contacts came to a total of $ 120.00 (without insurance, but I paid less b/​c I used my insurance) for a year’s worth of disposables for astigmatism. This is great price seeing as the last doctor I seen was going to charge me $ 400 (without insurance) for astigmatism contacts! I’m sure regular contacts are even less. Great doctor, great staff, great prices and service! Again the only thing unappealing about this office is that it is run down, but I’d much prefer a great doctor over a fancy location. I am referring everyone to him.

Dr. Eng is patient, thorough, and professional. His price is more than reasonable, and his staff is always friendly and knowledgeable about products and trends. He gave me good advice on trying different brands of contact lenses, understood my concerns with the glasses, and never pushed a sale on me. You wouldn’t think this old school practice would carry quite a selection of frames— but they do, with good taste! I got my Pro Design frames last year, and went for a pair of Tory Burch this year.
I will not go to any other optometrist.

I told him about my history on my crazy left eye and he sat there listening to it all. HE LISTENS PEOPLE! How may times have you been brushed off by medical professionals after voicing your concerns? NOT DR. ENG, HE LISTENS TO YOU.
He examined my eye and gave me a test pair of contacts.
We had to go trough 3 different pairs to find the right ones.
He was so understanding and patient; it was a great.
I sent my wife to see him and she said he was really nice.
His office didn’t push to sell or up-​charge for additional services. They were professional, understanding and accommodating.
What more can you ask for?

Yes, you SFers, it is out of the way, but it’s so worth it. This is an optometrist that is FANTASTIC.
Their front office staff are friendly and honest (which is especially useful when picking out new frames). They and Dr. Eng are VERY accommodating, too.
I moved down to LA for a few years, and they were WONDERFUL enough to not only order new contacts, then send them down south, but also pay the postage!
I am back up in SF, and they were more than accommodating in quickly scheduling me for a Saturday appointment! They even remembered me after (2) years of NO contact.
The visit is not your quick, in-​and-​out, I need to see as many patients as possible to make as much money as possible. Dr. Eng takes his time to not only be pleasant, but also provide a VERY thorough eye exam.
Their prices are reasonable, and they are great about explaining your vision benefits and how to get the most of them.
And … on a final note, go ahead and say his name out loud — John F Eng. hehe
