Krikit’s is a small independently owned garden center near the Southbury/Oxford town line on Rt. 67. When I started gardening about 4 years ago I stopped by Krikit’s for some starter plants — what I found was the best garden center in the area and I’ve been a loyal patron ever since. Other than the impressive hanging baskets that line the road, Krikits has an unassuming façade. A very small one room building is the only permanent structure but it is surrounded by well used space that hosts a plethora of flora for every place in your landscape. To the right gardeners will find sun loving shrubs, perennials, trees, groundcover, and a small assortment of garden structures. To the left under a large tree is an area dedicated to shade shrubs, perennials, and ground covers. Adjacent to the main building and behind it are several small greenhouses oveflowing with annuals. Along the gravel lot an L shaped overhang features an assortment of seasonal plants and garden features — small stone figures, pots, and flowers in the growing season, wreaths and greens in the winter. Fertilizers, soil amendments, and some additional specialty items are available in the small building where you also pay for your treasures. Unlike big box stores Krikit’s has unparalleled selection of premium, well cared for plants with staff who know their merchandise and are available to answer any of your questions. You will never see wilted or neglected plants or anyone throwing out plants because they were left to die on the shelf. Many annuals are grown on site and each is cultivated to perfection. Though big box stores have stepped up their game and now offer premium names like Proven Winners, I assure you you still want to stop here for your plants. Selection is far superior, plants are larger AND they have lower prices. This is true for annuals as well as many perennials. You won’t be buying bargain flats of flowers here, annuals are all sold in 4″ pots, but if you’re a container gardener like me, or just need a few premium annuals to make those bargain ones pop this is paradise found. In addition to high quality plants, superior selection, and knowledgable staff, Krikit’s offers membership deals, Bonus Bucks(10% back to spend at certain times of the year), design advice and assistance(they’ll actually plant your container for you if you are without the time, or are still cultivating your green thumb). I like to save up my bonus bucks from spring purchases for either fall planting or winter greens. I also take photos of my garden on my phone before heading over and if I need help finding the perfect plant staffers look at my pics and provide excellent advice. Store hours change depending on the season, so call ahead if you’re making a special trip, particularly if it’s later in the day. Happy Gardening!
