Red Hawk Golf and Resort

As of the date still no satisfaction their response to everything was acceptable. Including their Final response by email that my continued pursuit of this is considered harassment. Do not take your children here. You want to golf golf your children are not safe.

This used to be one of the premier courses in the valley. The superintendent and staff should be ashamed to charge $ 70 for a course that is below muni standards. Greens not mowed for starters. Putts changed directions 3 times on a simple 3 footer. Bunkers hadn’t been raked for some time. A one inch crust was tough at best to get out of let alone rake it when you were finished. Not what I remember of this course. There are a lot better courses in the valley for less money.

Owen in the pro shop was the most non professional golf employee I have encountered. He enjoys his little games. If you are tired of «entitled» people, I would not come to this establishment.

This is a great golf course made even better since they opened the previously private Hills course to the public. The Lakes course is flatter but with a lot of water hazards as you might expect. It meanders nicely through the original Wingfield Springs neighborhood and along the wetlands which are certified Audubon conservation areas. The Hills course is on the other side of Vista Boulevard and a whole different animal. It climbs the surrounding hillsides with long fairways and decidedly more varying terrain. Still, I have found playing both of these courses that the Hills is the easier of the two for an amateur duffer like me. Plus I like the variation in the terrain from hole to hole. They have a nice practice facility and top notch service from, the folks in the pro shop to the kids that drive the snack cart. Looks for deals on the net as this can be a pricey course in the peak season.

This is an above average golf course. Great shape etc. It is an odd layout for sure on the hills course. Many short par 4s, and also one that is 450ish from blue, and a par 5(no. 1) that is about the same length. Just odd. I guess the bogey on the long 4 and the birdie on the short 5 are a wash. The greens are difficult and very fast with a lot of slope. If you like classic golf courses you won’t like this one, most likely. Like many modern courses the greens are designed to deceive you speed and break wise. Local knowledge seems to me to be a major factor. rough is inconsistent. Some areas its relatively easy to hit out of, others nearly impossible. Watering may be an issue. I’m an 8 index, and didn’t break 95 for what its worth, if anything! Have fun.

We played The Hills on Saturday the 22^nd and a tournament on Friday the 28^th (Hills course also). The course is in amazing condition considering how bleak our water situation is. The greens are really nice and the rest of the course is still super green. If you’re a golf enthusiast you’ll be very happy with strictly the golf experience.
My struggle with Red Hawk came in other aspects. First, those damn «smart» golf carts. They are constantly buzzing about something, then inhibiting your speed when you’re trying to right the wrong, and honestly the one thing I want to be able to do with the communications portion, they won’t let you. How hard would it be to be able to order food and drinks or even just ask for the beverage cart?
Second, on a Saturday with a tournament on one course and people stacked up every 10 min on the other, how do you only run one beverage cart? We called several times and tried to locate it with promises they were sending one out. That was on the fifth hole. By the 13^th we finally caught her and the poor girl was run ragged. Worse yet, there were only half dozen PBR or Miller lites and a couple soggy sandwiches left, nothing truly edible. Alas, we grabbed a couple beers, waters, and jerky to get us through the last several holes. When I complained to her she almost cried. Afraid if I actually complained to someone she’d get fired.
After reading another review it sounds like the weekend of the ²²⁄₂₃ was seriously under staffed for Red Hawk. I will say my experience on the 28^th was completely different, probably because there were two tournaments running back to back that day. There were people everywhere! Too bad you don’t get that kind of service on a normal golf day.

I played the hills course Sunday ⁸⁄₂₃ with a 7:45 tee time. The course was in great shape, especially when considering our drought. I’m used to playing Washoe golf course (local municipal course), which is very frugal with their watering. Red Hawks Greens were quick and read true. When I showed up to the range where the starter was, it was chaos. It seemed a bit unorganized and under staffed for a Sunday morning. The rage ball machine was also not working properly which consumed at least half of the starters time as he was sliding his own card for everyone. I went out as a single and was supposed to be paired with two other people. They slipped by the stater as he was supplying range balls for the many people waiting. It made for a very slow day as the course was stacked ahead of me. Anyway, I’m excited to play the lakes course.

So yes, the course is one of the best in the region, (esp. the greens) and the facility is what you’d expect of a course of this calibur, but the reason I’m writing this review is because of the service experience.
Had a wonderful day on the course on an annual trip with some college friends. We went there with the intention of having a great time, and we succeeded. Unfortunately at the end of our round, I did something really stupid, I left my $ 300 range finder in the cart. To make it worse, I didn’t notice it gone until I went out to play again, a few days later, back at home in Portland OR.
To me, I just didn’t think it was realistic to expect one of the kids assigned the wonderful job of cleaning out carts to do anything but put said range finder on ebay. they probably don’t make much money, and if someone is going to be stupid enough to leave something that expensive behind (and not come asking for it for a few days) that’s enough reason to justify finding a new owner.
To my extreme surprise, they not only located it, they packed it up and sent it home to me!
I don’t want to take anything away from the on course experience. When the starter said «this course will give you all you want» he wasn’t lying. very difficult course, but also very fair (I’m a 12 handicap.) I will absolutely go back, I left way too many shots out there!!! (It wasn’t even that windy, I can’t imagine how challenging it would be if it were howling!)
And to the kid who made up for my stupidity, I say Bravo for doing the right thing, even when it would have been VERY easy to profit otherwise. Didn’t even leave a name, or I would call them and thank them personally (or at least mail them a nice tip!)
Awesome when people surprise, for the better. Clearly a well run business who understands the importance of «getting the right people on the bus.»

This place its by FAR the best place to play & the conditions of this 36 hole play in town. its one the best and the most green by far!!! I’ve totally recommend to get the players card! with the card you get great discounts on green fees! come on and play!!!

I’m a local and live within walking distance of the course. I play here every now and then. Its a beautifully maintained course during the summer. Winter hits and you cant help the conditions but the greens look visually amazing right now. Would love to play soon BUT…$ 55 dollars for green fees in February on a Thursday is ridiculous!!! What happened to winter rates? Terrible!
*That fee was on golfnow, com. When my buddy called it was $ 49. When I was a Talon Club member it was $ 45 in the summer. Still a high winter rate at $ 49.

This review is strictly for the fitness and swim center. I don’t play golf (apparently according to my PGA recording holding grandfather, I’m unteachable). Anyways, we joined Red Hawk this summer after enjoying the pool last summer. My now 4 year old daughter took lessons at the pool last year. She went from being petrified of water, to being ok with it. We decided to join this year so we could take advantage of the pool. Upon joining, I looked at fitness classes (which include reformer pilates) and there are a lot! Classes include kids classes and family yoga. It’s a very nice pool and fitness center. They even serve beer at the pool ($ 3 a beer, I believe). The pool is rarely busy and is a hidden gem. It’s $ 125 a month for a family membership and guests (immediate family) are $ 7 a visit.

Certainly have seen and Experienced better when I got married here 3 years ago.
Registration, GM just to mention a few could use some better people person skills,
The Wedding in Sept was a mess since the time I referred them. Run around with Wedding coordinator, several weeks until someone got back to them and they weren’t very nice or helpful. No Manager to help with the frustrating situation. — —-Had to hand hold people to get the room set up and keep on on everything…
THE REAL TOPPER… It was a Buffet dinner, DINNER WAS AWESOME thanks to good chiefs! The left over food was caught being boxed up and taken HOME FOR THE EMPLOYEES! This is obsurd!- This should have gone to the family’s who PAID to staying in the villas to enjoy the next day!!! RUDE– WEDDING CAKE WAS TAKEN IN BACK and BEING EATING BY 5 EMPLOYEES. I had to tell them to get that cake out there for the guests to eat, NOT THEM.
I know these workers take a lot of heat for weddings but really, You all need some better training and hire employees who know what they are doing and are passionate about it, not just because its a job with FREE food, etc.
FINALLY– A room was comp. and lots of champagne was brought after they made the Bride cry all morning. Really ruined her morning and stressed her out not to mention the family went to talk sense to the General Manager who finally gave a sm. apology.
I will NOT refer any other friends here. This isn’t the only time I’ve heard new staff/​employees were rude, unhelpful and don’t return calls and followup

I played the Hills course with some co-​workers as part of a team-​build event. It was a Monday afternoon and there was not many people at the course when we arrived. I play golf frequently and this place is average compared to the other courses I have played recently. Parking was confusing and I ended up moving my car after the employee at the bag drop said I could park in the lot that was labeled restaurant parking only. I would likely play here again in the future if I was in the area and looking for a course to play.
First the positives:
1) Green Fees for the afternoon round were very reasonable at $ 49 which included a cart and a small bucket of range balls. We started at 2:25 so this may have been a «twilight» fee.
2) Pro Shop was well equipped with apparel and equipment so if you needed something you could have picked it up right there.
3) Golf Carts were equipped with GPS units that gave yardage to the greens and also allowed for electronic score keeping. They also had a small cooler attached to the cart with ice to place your beverages in to keep them cool!
4) Hills course was in great shape with the fairways and green well kept. The layout of the Hills course was challenging but still fun to play. Several tee options including Gold, Black, Blue, White, & Ladies.
5) Beverage cart was frequently around the course and we saw her probably every 4 – 5 holes.
Negatives
1) Practice range was pretty small and they didn’t have any rubber tees on the mats to hit off of. You also couldn’t really get your golf cart near the practice tees so you had to unload your entire bag or grab a handful of clubs.
2) The small bucket included with the green fee provided about 30 – 40 golf balls. Not too bad but they should tell you this at the clubhouse so you can buy additional balls since the practice facility is probably a mile from the clubhouse.
3) Golf carts are GPS equipped which practically stop if you violate one of the pre-​programmed «rules» including driving too close to the green or driving on a fairway where you are supposed to stay on the cart path. Once you get the cart pointed in the right direction it should allow you to drive more than 2 MPH.
4) Distance from the clubhouse to the Hills Course 1^st hole is probably close to 2 miles, kind of silly in my opinion.
If you are in the Sparks/​Spanish Springs area and want to play a round of golf you can certainly do worse than this. I would recommend weekdays and afternoons as they seem to be less crowded.

Courses were in much better shape this year than last year. The Hills course is still very tough but at least there was grass under the ball. The Lakes course is a really nice track to play when the conditions are good.

I’ve played the public Lakes course twice now and enjoyed it both times. The course is well maintained and a lot of fun to play. Biggest complaint is pace of play. If you’re going on a weekend, don’t expect a nice 4-​hour round of golf. You are guaranteed to be stuck waiting at each and every tee box for the group in front of you. They have plenty of marshals around, so I’m not sure what the issue is. Other than that, I wish this place was more affordable so I could play more often.

I grew up in Sparks and remember before Red Hawk and Wingfield was developed. The public «Lakes» course is a far better course than the private «hills» course. I have played each course over 40 times throughout the years usually because of conveinance. Some of reasons I only give two starts is becasue the greens are increddbly inconsistant and the pace of play is beyond slow. It took 6 hours to play a satruday round last summer.
Another negative aspect is the layout for the entire entire facility. If you are walking it takes 20 min to get to the first tee on the Hills course. They should also flip flop the nines on the lakes course to make it easier to get to the first tee.
Perhaps the number one reason for the low rating is the new ownership and staff. Redhawk has turned into a cookie cutter hotel owned golf course that cares more about events, F&B, and tournaments. The staff is almost entirely new, not very friendly, and my experience is that they will nickle and dime you for everything (including tees & water).
If you are in the Reno/​Sparks area I would reccomend Arrowcreek, Wolfrun, or Lakeridge for good golf courses and friendly staff. I would even place Wahoe (our local muni) above both courses at Red Hawk.

Stayed a night here and the room was huge! It was a loft with a great view. The first floor bathroom was very spacious, and I loved how there were only regular showers. No tub/​showers! The kitchen was also very nice.
I’m giving this place three stars because the carpet was FILTHY. I mean absolutely filthy, dirt everywhere. So it definitely made me question whether everything else was clean.
I would come back if the carpet was cleaned!

We played in a tournament here last weekend. The pace of play was horrible (6 hours) but there was a local tournament in front of us which I suspect is what caused the problem.
I could probably best sum it up as a nice little course. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in very nice shape, although the greens were incredibly slow. I actually prefer slow greens as you can really give the ball a good tap.
I didn’t find the course to be terribly difficult, but then again I had a great round hitting 16 of 18 fairways/​greens. There is PLENTY of water, and the Par 3s are all carry. My advice: don’t be a hero, just put it on the green. The course is definitely set up to penalize those who slice their tee shots. You would be better off hitting a straight 3-​wood or hybrid than to slice your driver. There are plenty of bunkers to provide humility.
The staff was very courteous and helpful. All in all, I would recommend the course if you are in the area.

If you’re in Reno and a golfer, this is a must play. An absolute beautiful course and for $ 75.00 on the weekend, its a bargain. The course is forgiving especially with the wide fairways, but there are lots of fairway bunkers so get your suntan lotion out. The greens are big and on the day that I played, were slow. A challenging course with water in play on nearly every other hole. Friendly staff and excellent service. Will play there again when I’m back there which should be soon.
