Went here with my Boyfriend while in Spring Hill visiting my Parents. We love the outdoors, new adventures, including hiking. While we realized Spring Hill Florida hiking most likely wouldn’t involve hilly mountainous terrain, the Weeki Wachee Preserve left us quite disappointed. The entry road is just that– a(wide open) road, with quite a lack of lush greenery on either side. We had high hopes of perhaps a nice canopy of trees to keep cool on a hot sunny day. not even close. Warning if you do go on a hot sunny or even partly cloudy day, bringing ample water is strongly advised. When we did finally reach a body of water on our«hike», I was wondering if what I was seeing was a mirage as a result of my dizziness from mild dehydration. The land is so dry here, it seemed even wildlife steers clear. Thankfully the trails were marked. to ensure we were on the right path to returning to our car. We did however see a few folks utilizing the trail for mountain biking. I would much rather have experienced the Weeki Wachee Preserve on mountain bike. But it still is a place to which I will most likely never revisit.

This review is strictly for the hiking element of this preserve. I truly hated the hiking trails here. It seemed like this was an old park, turned it into a preserve to save on maintenance, and decided to call the former service roads«trails». Instead of walking through the woods(which are right next to the«trail»), you are walking in sandy dunes with no tree canopy and with overgrown weeds. It seemed a decent number of residents use the main paved road to reach the man made lakes but asides from paddling around, I see no real enchantment with this park.
