Carter’s Country

I’ve shot at several ranges in Houston and this is the only one that gave me attitude for being female and assumed I’d never shot a gun before. When asked if they rented rifles, I was told no, and that no ranges in Houston did. I found two close by that did. When asking about a rifle I was interested buying, they kept assuming it was a gift for a man and when I got the guy to stop interrupting me long enough to say it was for me he actually laughed.
They don’t allow rifle bags in the store or on the range and will yell at anyone who brings one in. I haven’t been able to get an explanation for this other than «every place has their own rules». They charge per person or per gun whichever is more so it could get very expensive.
They don’t keep up with the brass and there are generally allot of smokers.
The only good thing I can say about this place is that they have a 100 yard range that is relatively close by.

I have not used their range and probably never will due to the reviews here and elsewhere. Having said that, my rating has absolutely nothing to do with the range. This review is specifically about the shop.
The two star rating is a result of a simple return that never billed to my account. It was not a lot of money, so I let it go.
The pricing is average to expensive. They do have a good selection of firearms & accessories. If you need a holster, this place is worth a shot because they have a better selection than most of their competitors.
Was there on ¹⁄₂₀₁₆ for a bore snake and noticed a stupid sign requesting folks unload their open carried handguns before entering the store. Why?
Going forward, I will be taking ALL my business elsewhere.

Would be a great place if they would get rid of the garbage that works behind the counter. I don’t need to be treated poorly by some nine dollar an hour, heavyset nose pierced incompetent moron…
Will not go back until I get an apology from the owners for being mistreated I can spend my money at Gander Mountain and a number of other gun ranges in the area.
The manager did apologize but I can not in good conscience recommend the place until something more is done to treat people like they would like to be treated.

No open carry…, then no business from me. Its bad when a gun store doesnt trust the very people you make your money from. Change your policy or I’ll never set foot in that store again.

Walked in and requested a lane with my wife, my teenage stepson, and his friend and the lady at the counter asked for everyone’s ID’s. I then told her these are teens, they don’t have ID’s so she asked who their parents are and I said me. Since I look young, she makes an uncertain face. I handed her my ID and she said there’s no way you can have a 13 year old, you’re not his dad! Very rude and personal! And I said hello, we’re married. After that she was very rude while checking out. The safety guy on the firing range was very rude to me because I asked if I could get a refund because I didn’t feel welcomed or safe there. I got my refund and left and I will never go back here nor will I recommend this place to anyone.

Pretty terrible experience overall. I had called ahead to make sure they had the specific model firearm I was hunting for. After they assured me they had 4 of them, I drove 30 miles to pick it up. The sales staff was incredibly rude and then admitted they didn’t have any of the model I wanted. I also heard them be rascist to a Mexican couple ahead of me in line. Will never shop here again.

Walked into Carter’s not knowing anything about my new shotgun, with help from the excellent sales team there, I left feeling like an expert! Everyone I talked to was very friendly and informative, I was greeted as soon as i walked in the door and treated like family til I left. I would recommend this place to everyone!

Horrible sales experience and mount and bore sight done half ass. First, young incompetent sales associate was very rude and I felt rushed the entire time. Secondly a scope that had a price tag on it was different than the shelf price. He said that they would not honor it even though the tag was stickered to the scope. I then said, «I’ll make sure to mark that on my review». He replied, «go ahead you won’t hurt our business». Then by the time I picked a scope and had him mount it and bore sight it. He neglected to ask me how far up On the rail I wanted it for the eye relief and just brought it to me. I told him to please move it back and he gawked and said «we’ll maybe I shoulda asked you that in the first place». Then to top it all off I go outside to sight in at 50yds-​100yds, and I start shooting and get my 50 dialed in pretty good. I then moved over to the 100 yd lane 8 shots later and noticed immediately the rifle was shooting way left and all over the place. Kid left rail mounting bolts loose and I had to completely start over again because of scope almost falling off. Terrible experience. If it wasn’t for a man named Daniel that helped me after the trip I would not be going back. Good atmosphere for most part. Range people are very knowledgeable and kind. Prices are little higher than most places.

Went to Carter’s Country in Spring, TX on Friday, November 28^th whilst visiting family in The Woodlands. It’s out near George Bush Intercontinental Airport on the east side of I-​45.
North Houston has a lack of decent shooting ranges so I was eager to try this place out. This place has facilities for rifle, pistol and shotgun but I only shot pistols. Before entering the gun store, there is a big sign that says 1) ensure that your guns are unloaded with the slide locked open 2) no outside paper targets allowed and 3) rifles are permitted but their cases are not. I had a new 22 win mag bullpup rifle I was shooting so I had to leave the case in the truck.
Upon checking in, they will examine your firearms and put a little tag on them; which I didn’t care for. You pay per firearm or per person, whichever is greater. In our case, it was just my sister and I with 4 pistols and one rifle so the bill came to $ 70. Each firearm includes one paper target but if you wish to use Shoot’n’C targets they cost extra.
There is one incredibly long firing line for both pistol and rifle. There was brass everywhere which made it difficult to walk and no one was sweeping it up. The firing line is rather narrow so it was a bit difficult to navigate down to the 7 yard target area. Cease fires are called every 20 minutes and you just find a free stall you want to shoot at. There are Range Officers walking around but they didn’t seem to care much about flagrant safety violations such as muzzle sweeps or people fiddling with their firearms during a cease fire. Targets are fixed to a chicken wire fence with clothespins. In some places, the chicken wire had been shot out so you just try to find a spot that will work.
I will not be going back to Carter’s Country if I can help it. I always thought the gun ranges in Dallas were atrocious but in my experience the ones in the North Houston area are even worse. Elm Fork in Dallas is awfully nice compared to what I’ve seen but Extreme Tactics in Waxahachie is still the best!

Wow this is the best place for shooting in Houston. Forget about American shooting Center, they are rude, dirty and expensive. The atmosphere at Carter’s is awesome. Nice friendly people that love guns. The range officers didn’t look at us! Of course we weren’t doing anything stupid with our gun. Great place to buy a gun.

I would like to give them 5 stars but the some of the range officers made my visits unpleasant !!! :(

The staff in the store: 5 star
The staff in the field: 2 star (there is one or two that look at you like a criminal)
The facility range: 3star (would love to add a 200 yard but what I do not like is the no rifle inside case rule!!! I have a heavy rifle and lost of ammo. I like to keep everything inside my large bag… To my knowledge No other range in the Houston area does this!!!)
The facility store: 5 star (real helpful and super nice!!)
Prices: 2 star (the no time limit is good and the price per gun is ok but the price of the targets is WAY to High and you CAN NOT use stickers of any kind like the shoot-​N-​c, also they do have their own shoot-​N-​c but it is $ 2.50 per target and that is high because you can buy a pack of 6 shoot-​N-​c in academy for $ 5.99!!! I have not see a range around Houston that does this)
In general I like the place because is close to me and it has a good store with great service

Carter’s Country has been around for what seems forever. It used to be a relaxed atmosphere with all the usual people you would see on there on the weekends. However ever since the anti gun push, you now see EVERYONE there, many people that just bought a gun and have no idea how to safely & properly operate it… *sigh*
That has kind of forced CC to really crack down on the rules, and instead of just guns getting little bands, they also put them on people, and lastly they’ve fenced in the shooting area so you just can’t walk off the line like you used to…
Carters has also raised there prices in the past year or so, considering nothing has improved around there I don’t see why. Some things I don’t like is you pay by the person or gun (whichever is greater), which is ridiculous, all indoor ranges you can bring as many as you want, you just pay for the lane & time. I also don’t like how you *have* to buy their targets, and you can NOT use any stickers or tape to cover holes! That also rubs me the wrong way… You don’t have to be so stingy as to not allow people to put their own stickers on targets. Usually once my target is shot up and I’m still waiting for cease fire, I’ll just shoot the clothes pins… *shrug*
Typically I’ll only go here to shoot skeet, at least that area hasn’t changed much and the guys are a lot more layed back over there. Other than that I’ll only shoot pistol or rifles when I’m wanting to shoot steel/​aluminum casings as pretty much every indoor range will not allow it.
Kids are allowed, there is no age restriction. Basically they are more concerned the kids know proper safety and operation rather than saying they must be a certain age.
The place has its pro’s & con’s…
PRO:
— Can shoot steel & aluminum casings.
— No time limit shooting
— Usually has ammo in stock at not too crazy of mark-​ups.
— Shooting line is covered well and typically gets a good breeze
— Skeet /​trap fields have trees and decent shade
CON:
— Pay per person/​gun (whichever is greater)
— Only use their targets and no stickers allowed
— Max 100 yd on rifle range
— Some days the wire holding up the targets is in REALLY poor condition.
— Small parking lot
— Each skeet field throws different, when did they calibrate their machines last?

The people are so so so so rude. Do not come here to fire on the out door range. It is set up very confusingly and the staff acted like I was a terrorist! I am a former medic in The United States Army and I have never been treated so horribly by range staff! The range itself is set up to where you can only fire in prone, sitting, and kneeling positions. You cannot stand and fire. Just save your time and money.

One thing that I don’t like is how they ban blue masking tape so that you can’t cover your previous holes to save money. The lady at the counter explained to us that the reason for this ban is because the tape covers over the wooden post and people shoot them (causing damage to the wood). I’m sure this is a problem if you place your target over the wooden post, but most normal people would just hang their target over the wires like they are suppose to lol.
Other than the blue tape ban, the place isn’t too bad to shoot at. The safety crew aren’t always over your shoulders and are pretty relaxed but does their job well. Also, there are usually plenty of lanes open on weekday afternoons so I never had to wait for an open lane. Just expect to pay a little extra for an additional gun and target paper.

Hub and I came out the other day to fire our new weapons. He has a new Beowulf .50 upper for his AR-​15 and I have the Walther .22. We actually have more weapons that we would like to fire, but Carter’s charges by the weapon. Kind of odd to me, since it’s all the same once you’re on the range. Ok, whatever.
The range is very large and laid out behind the store in a long row. As you face out to the range, up close and personal is to your left, reach out and touch someone over 100 yards is to the right. There is trap shooting even further to your right, past the shed where you qualify for concealed carry. At the long range rifle stations, they have spotting scopes and sandbags at each station. That’s really nice.
Overall, this is a nice outdoor range. It gets really busy, but for giving your shoot’n irons a workout, it’ll do.
The store is pretty good as well. They carry the ammo and accessories you would need to go hunting, do some trap shooting, take care of or store your guns and ammo. The place always seems a little dim to me and a little dingy, but this is a guy place and feels like a guy place. I get it. I would like to dust the dead stuffed animals, though. Seems sad and disrespectful to me to let them get so dusty. The people at the counters can come off as a little snooty, especially if you’re not a gun freak or a regular. Hub and I have had to stand there and wait to even get acknowledged, let alone wait upon. That seems to be a common theme in gun places here in Houston, however. Not sure what that is, but it’s the standard so you put up with it or take your money somewhere else. Prices here are ok and they have a better selection of new and used firearms than a lot of other places. I do think Academy is better on ammo.
Carter’s is a good place to shoot and and to find some interesting firearms. You should head out at least once to see what they’re about.

I really enjoy going to Carter’s Country. They have a beautiful store, friendly staff and offer more services than most shooting ranges. I can shoot skeet, rifle or pistol all on one place.
I wish they didn’t charge «per gun» on the pistol range. I usually like to practice with several pistols, but this gets cost prohibitive with their current pricing structure. I’ve been to other ranges that just charged by the hour or «per shooter» and this makes it more convenient for me to practice.

Carter’s Country reminds me of theme park. A theme park where most of the visitors are either sharpening their skills for an upcoming hunt or just good ol’ boys looking to shoot some stuff. The main building houses guns, ammo, and accessories for purchase as well as counters to pay your entrance (which I thought was relatively low) into the range of your choice. It also houses a range of animal heads from the typical deer to the more exotic wild cat or gazelle. You’ve got several different areas in which to shoot based on the type of gun (shot gun, rifle, hand gun, etc) and when I went, each one was packed full.
This was my first experience at a gun range and also the first time I’ve ever shot a gun. I went with my dad for a little father/​daughter bonding and actually had a great time. We were shooting a rifle and had a target and though I looked extremely out of place (no camo or boots of any kind), I actually did pretty well for a newbie. The thing I really liked was that they stop every 20 minutes so you can add/​replace a target. So even if you got to the range right at the start of a new round you wouldn’t have to wait long to put up a target.
Before we left we watched some people with shot guns shooting clay pigeons. That looked like a lot of fun so I will have to try it next time. Since my parents only live about half an hour away from Carter’s, I imagine there will definitely be a next time.
