Maven Jiu-​jitsu Academy specializes in educating the public in the art of Brazilian Jiu-​jitsu. We specialize in teaching both adults and children.

You will learn from Professor James Quan a blackbelt in jiu-​jitsu from the BJJ Revolution Team who has a Masters Degree in Education from the University of San Diego.

We offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes in a clean and professional environment. Adult fundamental and advanced classes are offered as well as classes for kids from 10 – 16 years old.

James Q.

Business Owner

James Quan was born in the Philippines and raised on the tropical island of Guam. As a child he started his martial arts training in taekwondo, then continued his studies in judo. In 1996, he attended the University of Oregon where he was introduced to the art of Brazilian jiu-​jitsu. James received his black belt from Carlson Gracie Sr. black belt Rodrigo Mederios in 2011. During his training, he also became one of the first members of the BJJ Revolution team to win the Mundial World Championships in the purple belt division in 2007. Professor Quan is a credentialed teacher and holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Teaching from the University of San Diego. James is passionate about understanding the technical aspects of jiu-​jitsu and is eager to share his knowledge with his students.

I first met Professor Quan when he was residing in his home island of Guam as an educator.
At first, i was very skeptical about his jiujitsu due to his massive size. I thought he was doing so well because his strength and weight would just be too overwhelming for my jiujitsu to go into effect. That was until i took an actual class with Professor Quan. His educational background (Masters in Curriculum) provides Professor Quan with the ability to break down techniques and situations into an effective system of mechanics and pass the information in the simplest way for anyone to understand. After the first class i attended with him, the skepticism went right out the door.
Since that day, i have built a great relationship with Professor Quan. He has not only helped my jiujitsu elevate to new heights i never knew possible, but his positive character and humility has taught me many things about myself. I have truly never met anyone as passionate about jiujitsu as Professor Quan is. He lives for this.
The only regret and disappointment i have is that i wish i met Professor Quan when i first started my jiujitsu journey (2005). Please, if you are looking to turn a new leaf and start the journey of jiujitsu, or if you are even in the area of Spring, TX, please stop by James Quan’s Academy, it might just change you life — like it did mine.

I just moved to the springs area and decided I wanted to try something new besides just working out. Been hearing so much about Jiu Jitsu from friends so I decided to google it and read reviews on different places. Maven Academy caught my attention from so many good experience from others so I decided to call in an make and appointment to meet up with professor James Quan. Prior to having no martial arts experience I was nervous about Joining. Now 2 months into training it was the best decision Ive made to joined this academy cause everyone here treats you as family and are willing to put in time to help you get better. If your trying to look for a clean, friendly environment and a awesome Dai ca proffesor to train under this is the place

Had the privilege of dropping in to train with Maven Jiu-​Jitsu Academy and found it to be a haven of welcoming Jiu-​Jitsu practitioners. The Academy is led by a humble and passionate Professor. Professor Quan and his students create an environment you instantly want to be a part of. Professor Quan’s teaching ability is something to be desired… it’s simple and effective. If I lived anywhere near Spring, I’d definitely find a spot on his mat. Keep up the awesome work Professor! Oss!

A bit on my background. I trained 2.5 years MMA at Death Row MMA, 6 months (on and off) at Paradigm BJJ, and have trained 4 solid years at Revolution BJJ Houston. I’ve dropped in at a good many gyms around the state. I am a BJJ purple belt, and I train exclusively BJJ now. I have known Prof. Quan for over a year, as he taught and trained at Revolution BJJ Houston.
There are a lot of great schools in Houston where you can go to learn BJJ under a great instructor. What separates Prof. Quan from other professors is his ability to break down a sequence into its individual mechanics, explain why those mechanics are important, and will step you incrementally through the mechanics until you understand the whole sequence. Prof. Quan’s attention to detail and ability to clearly explain every aspect of the mechanics will improve your game, whether you are a better or are more advanced. If you’re just starting out, Prof. Quan will not leave you behind. I highly recommend Prof. Quan and personally will be making the visit up to Spring to train with him as much as possible!

His instruction on technique and attention to detail, whether it is basic or advanced is top notch. Professor James Quan is an incredible Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu instructor. He has an uncanny ability to communicate the complex details and intricacies of BJJ in a simple and structured manner so that both beginners and advanced practitioners can implement technique in an efficient and effective manner. He is able to bring to bear his Masters in Education to his world-​champion caliber expertise in the art to provide great detail in explaining moves, sequences, submissions and counters. Professor Quan is an extremely friendly and patient person who takes the time to make sure that his students understand technique and practice it properly for both self-​defense and sport Jiu-​Jitsu applications. Professor Quan has sincere passion for the art of jiu-​jitsu. He is extremely proficient in all aspects and is eager to share what he has learned with his students. His lessons are well thought out and very detail oriented placing much emphasis on fundamentals because he believes that a strong foundation is an absolute must. His 14+ years of experience in the martial art coupled with the training he has received as a professional educator allows for a lesson that anyone will definitely benefit from and truly understand.
