I moved from Dixon IL to Springfield. Dixon has the best local hardware store I’ve ever been in. It’s an Ace Hardware. They have a lot of male qualified help to answer questions and help create whatever nightmare project you’re working on plus they stock one of everything.
In Springfield the closest I’ve found so far is True Value on Bruns. It’s still a distant second to Ace in Dixon but they have reasonable help and they seem to have a little bit of everything.

This place is a gem. They don’t have a huge selection but they probably have or can get what you need. It’s nice to see a hardware store that keeps nuts, bolts and washers loose in drawers, so you can buy them by the piece rather than the package. On the other hand, I couldn’t find a decent mop here. The staff is great — very knowledgeable, and willing to help. The second time you go in, they remember you.
