History

Established in 1967.

This site, on a hill overlooking downtown Springfield, was the nation’s first arsenal, established as Springfield Armory in 1794. When the Armory closed, a community college was formed on the Armory Square portion, with 20 acres under federal (National Park Service) jurisdiction and 35 acres as the campus. This land has been significant in American history, from Shays’ Rebellion in 1789 through visits by presidents and poets, and for the manufacturing innovations that drew industry and helped build Springfield. STCC was founded to provide education for careers, such as laser optics or respiratory care or computer security, that are important in our economy, as well as preparation for transfer to 4-year colleges or universities.
