My mother and I have made it an annual tradition to venture out to U-​Pick at the height of blueberry season to stock up. We go through a lot of blueberries during this season, and picking/​purchasing them here saves a lot of money. Less than half the cost of grocery stores. Plus the berries are much better quality. Big and juicy.
U-​Pick has a blueberry field and a blackberry field ripe for the picking, as well as some homemade jams and jellies for sale. So you can stock up on everything you need for various recipes, etc. We love to buy a large batch of blueberries to make pies and other delicious treats.
Plus, picking the berries yourself is just all-​around fun. This is a great way to spend a Saturday with family or friends. The kids will love it too. A few tips:
1. Go early in the day. First thing in the morning, if you can. It get’s pretty hot (being Florida and all), but if you go early you can usually gather enough berries and escape before the heat of the day.
2. Go early in the season. We’ve gone later before and the berries were a little picked over. If you go early, there are basically more berries on one bush than you can pick.
