Cranberry’s Grocery & Eatery

This is going to sound snobby, but when the general store in a nearby town sells ammo and advertises their butchering skills among the crackers and soup… this shop is so advanced. It’s organic foods and healthy for everyone soaps and cleaners are a welcome surprise. In the back you can be served lunch or grab it to go. Delicious desserts!

My job gets me to Staunton fairly often. Cranberry’s is a favorite when I have time to stop for lunch. The food and coffee/​tea are great and it’s a nice quiet place with some unique shopping. My new favorite sandwich is the club (they recently added) with a cup if slowswing tea. It a great place to stop if you’re not in a hurry. They have Wi-​Fi but for some reason I always have trouble getting on-​line.

Came by here for a quick lunch. We were both disappointed with our sandwiches, I’m afraid! I’m all for places committed to serving healthy food. Just wish it tasted delicious, too!
I think some of it was just weird choices. I got a turkey reuben, for example, and it was on some very funky bread and was turkey, cheese and mustard. But that’s nor a reuben! So maybe don’t call it a reuben. Or call it a reuben but then use the expected ingredients.
Liked the ambiance and laxness of the place, just don’t think I’d go back or particularly recommend it to others.

I got sandwiches here twice to go. The multi-​grain bread and toasted gluten free bread were tasty (gluten free bread can be awful and dry, but this one was actually really good). I was asked if I needed GF preparations, so it seems that they are Celiac friendly. The turkey and the roast beef sandwiches were enjoyable. If you are looking for tasty lunch sandwiches, or need GF options, look no further.

I like to support places like Cranberry’s. The wraps, salads and smoothies are good: I appreciate the organic and healthfood options.
But there’s a culture of absolute crap service that permeates the place. There was a young woman working behind the counter who seemed helpful and polite, but the young guy who took my order came to the counter and said nothing — no «can I help you?» or anything. I told him what I wanted. He mumbled my total, I paid, and nothing. No «thanks» or «that’ll be right out.» I’d ordered there before and knew they weren’t great at service, so I sat down. Five minutes or so later, the guy came out with my order, plonked it in front of me, and stalked off. It was kind of funny. Even for Cranberry’s, this was bad.

Certainly nothing to write home about, even if you are a wholesome food junkie. I went to lunch with a friend. They guy behind the counter was downright rude. He wouldn’t even look me in the face. He argued with me about what I wanted to eat. I was so flustered I didn’t think to ask for a drink and he didn’t offer. A glass of water would have been nice. Potato chips with a sandwich? Not very healthy to me. I got a salad. It was large, but nondescript. No flavor, no originality. (I wanted the spicy peanut dressing but the jerk talked me out of it. I wish I had stood my ground)
I really don’t want to go back again. I see from the previous writeup that the quiches are crustless. Wish I had known, but didn’t see that on the menu.
Definitely hard to find free parking close by. You might get lucky.
As for the little store, prices are absolutely outlandish. Enough said.

A great place to stop and shop or dine when in Staunton. Convenient downtown location with many delicious options on unique café menu. Lots of ‘finds’ in the natural food section. Fun gift shopping as well.

Great selection of teas! Oatmeal Bake = best deal in town for breakfast (warmed oatmeal muffin with banana, a small pitcher of whole milk, and a small portion of maple syrup on the side). Yum.
Quiches are crestless and gluten-​free.

Just awful.
My boyfriend and I went here to get coffee because we heard there was a little café in the back. We ordered, and my boyfriend went to shop a little and left me with his credit card to pay for the coffee, but the girl who had just taken our order proceeded to just start chatting with another patron on the other side of the room instead of making our drinks or ringing me up. This went on for quite a while until my boyfriend came back because he needed his card to make another purchase. It was pretty rude.
Once we actually got our coffee, it wasn’t even hot. And by that I mean it was barely even room temperature. How can coffee that was JUST made be cold?
These people obviously don’t know how to be respectful to their customers or make coffee. Don’t waste your money here. Go to Micah’s coffee in Waynesboro where they are super nice AND make good coffee.

Loved this place. We popped n for lunch & will definitely go back. Our wraps were both great. And where else can you eat lunch and stock up on health options in the grocer side. I also came out with several unique gifts and snacks for our bike ride.

I love these guys! The food is great, and there is a good amount of variety. I’ve heard that some have had a few bad experiences but I’ve never had one.
I always get a breakfast burrito with no salsa, my only complaint is if I get it to go I have to double check that they cut it in half!
Ps: if it’s in season, try the dairy free pumpkin smoothie– it’s their best one and it’s only available in late fall.

This place is okay. It’s a health food store in the front and a decent little eatery in the back. I somehow remember the food being better than it was this time around. Imagine my disappointment when I, sensing the natural food store element of local and organic goods, ordered some bacon only to find that they served not a nitrate-​free platter of deliciousness, but rather an obviously pre-​cooked and reheated dish of what reminded me of elementary school.
I shouldn’t talk too much shit on the place though, I do actually like it. The breakfast burrito is what I’ve always had here and it’s a reliable and affordable way to start one’s day. The coffee is good too, which is important.
Music is important too.
I was a bit relieved, if not perplexed, when Taylor Swift’s crummy new «pop» song was followed by Roy Orbison’s classic «You Got It». I prefer to either like or dislike music in an establishment.

A certified Gluten Free café and an adorable albeit small natural/​organic market, along with supplements, homeopathics, natural body care, AND great coffee all under one roof. This is my idea of heaven. Split the Rockin Roast Beef on a gf wrap and The Cubano on Rudi’s whole grain bread with The Man. Both were excellent. They even came with a little baggie of chips like Mom would put in my lunch as a kid. Is it cheaper and faster to get a burger at McNasty drive-​thru? Yup. But this is real food, and it won’t make me sick. Worth every dime.

All the best parts of brunch + your local food co-​op. Stock up on bulk spices, kombucha on tap, local beer/​wines, and specialty foods before settling down for an excellent meal.

In a large city, this place might not stand out so much; their grocery items are somewhat limited (that section of the business seems to be focused more on toiletries, books, and other non-​food items. I haven’t tried the eatery. In a small town, however, it definitely seemed like a place to find some more difficult items.
Even so, I found a few items I wanted to purchase on my one/​only visit. However, when I went to pay, the woman behind the counter pretty much ignored me, choosing instead to continue gossiping with someone else even while ringing up my purchases (she didn’t even tell me what I owed, but instead simply pointed the the total on the register).
I wish I’d gotten her name, because it was definitely pretty frustrating to be treated like I didn’t exist, and I actually had some questions about their stock, but at this point I felt too unwanted to ask.
It’s unlikely I will return.

A great place for a cozy, healthy breakfast.
I got the grits casserole with green chili sauce (very good, a little heat) and my husband got the square breakfast that was fantastic. Their fresh squeezed orange juice was also very good.

Cranberry’s is a great little grocery store, as long as you know what you’re getting into.
1) The food is tasty, but the best thing about it is that it is relatively healthy. The meats and eggs come from Polyface farms, which is a huge bonus. The juices and smoothies are great, and the people who work there are friendly.
2) The Kombucha on tap is amazing. If you ever liked kombucha or even considered trying it… this is the place. It is light, refreshing, fizzy, and tasty!
3) The selection is limited… unfortunately. What they do have is great.
Give it a try, but read reviews first and you will not be disappointed!

A fact that I’ve always found fascinating about Staunton is that Barack Obama carried the city in both 2008 and 2012. This is interesting because Staunton is in a seriously red state part of Virginia. Harrisonburg, just up the road voted over 70% for Mitt Romney, for example.
But walking into Cranberry’s explains the anomaly that is Staunton nicely. The city, and especially this story, has transformed the «screw everyone else» ethos into a «shop local (so I get mine)» ethos.
Cranberry’s is like a permanent farmer’s market right off the main drag of Staunton. If a small farmer in the Shenandoah Valley grew it, and it’s decently good for people, it’s probably here (vegetarian, vegan, organic, chemical free, and otherwise). And it’s not just the local food economy they support. They also carry locally made soaps and other personal care products.
Since the bed and breakfast we stayed at had me full until almost dinner, we didn’t get a chance to try the café. But the prices seemed good (for a pretty extensive menu) and the atmosphere felt friendly and about as local as the store itself.
We ended up availing ourselves of some veggie jerky for the road as well as getting some (sadly, national brand) organic chips. I have to say we were slightly disappointed there weren’t more ready to eat vegetarian sandwiches and such available in their refrigerators for our car trip ahead. But I’m glad we stopped here on our way out of Staunton to support the local economy in this great small town.

Cute place. Skimpy servings. $ 26.00 for breakfast for 2. We left hungry and hubby said we could have eaten at Stonewall Jackson hotel breakfast buffet for same price and we would have gotten way more food!
Workers were not attentive to customers. What little food we got was good but just not enough for what we paid.
