We take great pride in every inspection we perform. When the inspection is over, your inspector will prepare a detailed inspection report regarding the property. All of our inspectors aim for the highest levels of certification and training — Virginia State Certified Home inspector, ASHI Certified, AHIT Certified, Radon Measurement Specialist Certified, and Certified Residential Thermographer (Infrared).

Established in 2012.

Excel Home Inspections, LLC was founded by Ian McNaught who formerly owned and operated a home improvement company for six years prior. We have taken our knowledge of construction, proper building techniques and in the field experience to become one of the best home inspection companies around. We opened for business in 2012 and are growing with plans to expand our services in the years to come.

After working in the construction and home improvement/​remodeling fields for about seven years, I decided guide my career in a slightly different direction. Home inspection became a perfect fit for me with my previous work experience and desire to pursue further understanding of construction and all things house/​building related. Since then i have started Excel Home Inspections and am now a company with a few employees, growing at an exponential rate. I strive to learn and improve my inspection knowledge on a weekly basis as i feel that staying current is one of the most important aspects of a great home inspector!

I bought my first home last year and could not have been happier with the excellent service provided by Excel Inspections. Ian and his team are not only incredibly professional and knowledgeable, they are also kind and go the extra mile to make sure to provide a superior home inspection.
The inspection itself was extremely thorough. The inspector encouraged me to be as involved as I wanted and happily took the time to answer my numerous questions. It was great to be able to have the same company provide a high quality radon test, and also to have the latest infrared camera technology to detect leaks and areas of heat loss/​insufficient insulation within the walls and roof. I had complete peace of mind that I could move forward with an accurate understanding of the condition of the house and needed repairs.
The inspection report arrived in a timely manner and was very detailed. Despite it’s length, it was easy to read through since it was broken down into the different major systems of the house and then further broken down into categories of problems/​repairs (e.g. major vs minor issues). There were plenty of pictures to reference for all the findings, and even helpful explanations of terms and other resources for more information which I found very useful. The high quality inspection and report allowed me to negotiate with the bank to reduce the price of the foreclosed house I was purchasing by $ 30,000! I continue to use the report to this day as a guide for working on improving my home.
I have heard stories and read reviews for many other home inspectors, and I can honestly say that I have not seen any other company out there with as many constantly high reviews for both the quality of work and caliber of people as Excel Inspections. They are truly of the highest quality and integrity — something worth every penny when it comes to the largest purchase of your life. I highly recommend Excel Inspections to all my friends and family, and plan to use them again for any future needs.

I cannot recommend Excel highly enough. Ian was measured and meticulous in his inspection, and patient and clear in his explanations. Within a day I received a highly professional Inspection Report with clear photos and descriptions of concerns, and complete explanations of what was required for repairs/​replacements. The place he inspected for me turned out to have a lot of problems — not what the potential buyer wants to hear — but exactly the honest evaluation I was paying for. He also spoke with me at length when I called later with questions, despite the fact that it was a Friday evening. A professional, and a really nice guy.

I bought a house in the Northwest DC neighborhood of Petworth in September, 2015 (3 months ago at the time of this post). Ian came out and inspected my house for an initial inspection and also for a re-​inspection after the work had been done per the sale contract addendum. Ian was incredibly thorough and had great interpersonal skills throughout the entire process. He found a laundry list of items that needed to be corrected, not the least of which was a roof that was 25+ years old. Thanks to his thoroughness, I got the whole roof replaced as part of the sale.
When it was time to do a re-​inspection, I found that water had penetrated into the unfinished crawlspaces of the basement. He used an infrared camera to discover the source of the water which gave me the information I needed to fix the water issues and prevent water coming into the basement in the future.
With his help, I have a roadmap to my house that I have been using to address all issues both large and small and will continue to use it for the next several years as I fix various issues in the house.
Even now, I will periodically message him about issues and tools, and he responds within 24 hours.
I would absolutely recommend Ian as a Home Inspector and would use him again if I needed to.

I was «so» impressed with the home inspection! In fact the realtor was so impressed he said the inspector was astounding! He was very thorough with the inspection and did not run through the house quickly just to get the inspection done. He «really» cares about his customers. He did not leave a stone unturned. If there was something to be found — oh my gosh — he will find it. My husband is a rather quiet man but he even continued to comment of how thorough the inspector was with the inspection. When I came home I told my sister, father, and friends about the company. As customers, we all want good, honest service, especially in these days. He was on time and ready to work. He explained in detail everything he was going to do before he started the inspection and encouraged us to ask questions during the entire process. Everything was documented and he immediately advised us in detail of any problems with the house. He is very approachable and became not only a person we would like to work with again, but a friend.

My experience with Excel Inspections found them to be prompt, thorough and very detail-​oriented. Ian performed the inspection, which took around 4 hours to complete. Since it was for a renovated old DC row house, the information that the inspection uncovered was essential.
This is my first time buying a house, and working with Ian was the first time in this treacherous process that I felt like I could actually trust someone and they had my interests at heart.
I paid a little extra for the Infrared Leak Detection, and am very happy I did. 2 pretty serious leaks were revealed that did not show up in the initial inspection.
Overall, a highly recommended experience.

Like many others, I was impressed by the consistent 5-​star ratings and glowing reviews on Unilocal.So, I scheduled to have Ian come out and perform an inspection. And, I’m so glad I did. He was on time, energetic, knowledgeable, and conducted a VERY thorough review (about 3.5 hours). I walked around the home with Ian and he pointed out every issue he saw as well as provided tips for future home maintenance.
Ian took the time to point out not only those issues but explained to my satisfaction why those things were issues and how I might approach fixing them. His report also went above and beyond my expectations. He delivered it ahead of schedule and it was extremely detailed.
I have already recommended him to my friends and will look to him for future home inspection services!

Did a great job, and it was very informative as well. Report provided afterwards was excellent! Overall very simple process, nice electronic process for scheduling and for receiving report. Only complaint was that training of other staff occurred during inspection, so the inspection lasted longer than normal, but wouldn’t count that against Excel Home Inspections (it happens).

I am a first time home buyer and it has been a crazy experience. You never know what you’ll get out of a title company, lender, insurance company, or even what the seller might be hiding. It can certainly be a stressful time and at the end of the day you want to feel good about your purchase.
So naturally I pulled up Unilocal to start scouring over reviews to find the best home inspector out there. After a short while I realized that there were many options for home inspectors who were all highly rated. I figured that I couldn’t go wrong, but I picked Excel Home Inspections because they were also highly rated on Angie’s list and had a very professional website. I can’t tell you how happy I am that we did because there is no way we could have received a better inspection from anyone else. I want to call out Ian specifically for doing a tremendous job.
First of all, Ian is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet. By the end of the inspection we felt like we had a new friend just a phone call away to help out with the house. He took his time to answer every question and carefully examined every window, every outlet… and pretty much everything. He had a clear set agenda from the get go and did not miss a thing.
As a first time home buyer I am not familiar with a lot of the maintenance issues you encounter when owning a house. Ian was more than happy to walk me through the steps needed to perform certain repairs and when to expect to replace big ticket items. He walked us through the winterization process and showed us how to adjust/​change our hot water heater settings, indoor air handling filters, and even gave us a quick tutorial on the circuit breakers in our panel.
Do you have a family member with you who will be over-​analytical or critical? Ian will patiently explain something multiple times if necessary until you and your family feel comfortable both with the process and your new home.
If you need your house inspected look no further than Ian. You will not be disappointed and you will feel confident that your house will last a long time.

Ian did an exceptional job during our recent home inspection. He was prompt, courteous, and extremely thorough. At all times during our walk through, he would point out the various items and was always willing to answer additional or clarifying questions. As first time home buyers we used Ian for our home inspection based on the excellent reviews online. Jenn was very helpful in accommodating our start time and the need for multiple changes in schedule. We were delayed and Ian was able to get started without us but catch us up afterwards which we really appreciated. Ian was thorough and clearly explained the issues he was documenting along the way. A detailed report with issues classified as major or minor and pictures with issue descriptions was delivered later that evening and we were able to share with our builder to get most items addressed. Inspection was done on Tuesday afternoon and I had the full report in my email Wednesday morning. Ian was on time and fully prepared. He covered every part of the home I was purchasing, taking photos of every aspect of the house. He was extremely thorough and informative, explaining everything to me as we went inside and outside of the house. Besides pointing out issues, he also gave me great maintenance tips from draining water away from the house to heating/​cooling efficiency. The report was extremely detailed with photos and whether problems were minor or major concerns. I highly recommend him if you are looking at purchasing a home.

My wife and I were thoroughly impressed with Ian on our recent home inspection. During the inspection Ian was extremely professional, personable and did an amazing job walking through the home with us. My wife has very limited knowledge of home construction and Ian was able to explain everything on a basic level to help her understand. I have 4 years of experience in the construction industry and it was obvious Ian had a vast amount of knowledge on all the major systems and structures with the home. Ian provided us tons of information including the most have and nice to have repairs. Additionally, the report we received the next morning was extremely detailed and provided additional information need to complete proper repairs.

I used Ian for my home inspection after I saw the great reviews that he got online. I had to push out my contingency date to be able to get him, but he was well worth it. I bought a townhouse in Loudoun County and he was extremely thorough. He let my realtor and me walk around with him while he did the inspection and pointed things out to me that I would have never thought about. He did the report extremely quickly and thoroughly. Super nice guy and knew what he was talking about. I rarely write reviews, but he is definitely worth a great review! Even after his inspection, his report is so thorough and he breaks it down in the simplest of terms & gives you links to go to see how it should be. We have used Excel twice in the past month. Ian is extremely thorough and highly educated in home systems. His detailed and thorough report on the first home we planned to purchase saved us thousands in potential repairs. We opted not to purchase the home. We hired him again to inspect the second home and once again Ian was worth every penny! He takes the time to explain everything he is seeing as he sees it. We used Ian for our hew home purchase this past December. The woman that booked the appointment, Jenn, was extremely sweet and professional. The day of the scheduled inspection my builder called me one hour before our appointment with Ian and said that the inspection could not occur that afternoon due to an issue with the gas company. I called Ian and Jenn immediately and they were extremely understanding despite the cancellation policy they had, and worked with me to reschedule to the next available time.
The inspection itself was incredibly thorough and left us with a sense of confidence in the purchase of the home. Ian was very detailed and knowledgeable, and pointed out things that I would never even think to look into. The report was close to a work of art, being extremely detailed and easy to read with the images clearly labeled.

Very, Very helpful. We had Ian do inspection on the house we wanted to buy. He did a very thorough job (spent at least 4 hrs) and saved us a lot of money. Will definitely recommend. Off note, he used a drone to take pictures of the roof, that showed a lot of damage which might have been missed by any other inspector as this house was a 4 level town home. Additionally, he is very responsive and professional.

CALL IAN FIRST if you are buying a house in Loudoun County (or any other county for that matter). I have worked with Excel House Inspections several times and have always been amazed at what he discovers… No house is perfect –But, before you make the biggest purchase of your life you need to know what you are walking into— Ian performs *extremely* thorough home inspections that can alert you to very serious/​costly problems that may not be visible to the naked eye… If you are buying new construction this is ESPECIALLY true…
