We are a 1940’s style bakery that specializes in desserts. We maintain a nut free facility, and can bake gluten free, egg free, plus bake for many other allergic conditions.
History
Established in 2015.
LaFay Bakery and Catering welcomes its customers to the blending of the traditions of two different family recipes. The owners Nelson and Krista Tagres grew up around amazing food. Nelson found his passion for baking while working in his family’s bakery in Guatemala and he has been in the restaurant and baking business for over 15 years. Krista grew up in a rural area in central Pennsylvania steeped in rich Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch culture watching her grandmother LaFay in her kitchen making everything from scratch — apple dumplings, pies, breads, cakes, breakfast pastries — putting time and love into everything she made, and often surrounded by family as she baked. The Tagre’s met each other in 2007 and they have been continually merging their cultures into baking magical goodies ever since.
Meet the Business Owner
Nelson and Krista T.
Business Owner
Nelson has been in the restaurant and baking business for over 15 years. Working in his family’s bakery in Guatemala he learned the traditions of brick oven bread and making everything from scratch. He eventually purchased his own bakery and grew it to several locations. When immigrating to the United States he continued to cook and bake here in the Northern Virginia area. He was able to merge the two cultures and create traditional food and pastries with a Spanish Flair.
Krista grew up watching her grandmother in her kitchen making everything from scratch — apple dumplings, pies, breads, cakes, breakfast pastries — putting time and love into everything she made, and often surrounded by family as she baked. Her grandmother often told her «If you have good quality ingredients and a passion for what you do it will be amazing.», «Oh and lots of icing.» (Myra LaFay Hawkins)
