The Water Street Inn is a distinctive and romantic 41-room Historic Inn located on the St. Croix River in Downtown Stillwater, Minnesota. Our accommodations, restaurant, Irish pub and conference facilities graciously blend the ambiance of an era gone by with the comforts of modern amenities.
History
Established in 1890.
The Lumber Exchange Building was constructed circa 1890 by Stillwater’s lumber barons during the boom years of logging on the St. Croix River.
The building was built by the Union Depot & Transfer Company on the first modern business block in the city. In 1887, the company also built Union Station (Stillwater’s train depot) which is directly to the north. The Lumber Exchange Building continued to be an important building in Stillwater for more than 100 years. Upon its debut in 1890, it was equipped with modern heating, plumbing and electricity — and even had one of the first elevators in the state.
Its early occupants included the famous and wealthy lumber merchants from the Stillwater area. The site features ten large walk-in vaults, which were used to house the wealth of the rich lumber families. The first floor of the building contained storefronts, a post office, a barbershop and an upscale saloon (where the pub is now).

His goal has been to plant Charlie’s Irish Pub solidly in the middle of the Irish Pub scene while also successfully growing a restaurant concept with both casual and fine dining segments. Crotty is known for his creativity, personable demeanor and his attitude toward service, «the answer is always yes.»
