Description

Specialties

The Long Island Museum is dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. The museum has been accredited by the American Association of Museums since 1973 for excellence in exhibitions, programs and collection care. In 2006 the museum joined a small group of institutions nationwide as a Smithsonian Affiliate. The museum’s permanent collection numbers over 40,000 items dating from the late 1700s to the present, including American artifacts of everyday life, fine art and works by renowned genre painter and Setauket resident William Sidney Mount, among others, and nearly 200 historic carriages.

History

Established in 1939.

What began as a small, personal collection of hunting trophies and other oddities, eventually became a collection of fine art and artifacts, thanks in part to Mrs. Ward Melville. The museum’s collection continued to grow and eventually moved from a small building in the Stony Brook Village to its current location. It now occupies nine scenic acres on two sides of Route 25A in the heart of Stony Brook, on land previously occupied by a saw mill and the Stony Brook Hotel.
