Located near Blowing Rock, Boone, Banner Elk, and Linville, in The Western North Carolina High Country Mountains. Designed, owned and managed by the award-​winning Mast Farm Inn, and Executive Chef Andrew Long, Over Yonder restaurant tells the story of historic Appalachian cuisine in a picturesque setting atop the rolling hills and peaks of Valle Crucis, North Carolina. Located across from the Original Mast General Store, a few hundred yards from The Mast Farm Inn. Over Yonder has a full Spirits, Beer, Wine, Mixed Beverage Restaurant ABC license and features a full service bar.

«Over Yonder» is the latest initiative by the owners of the award-​winning historic Mast Farm Inn and Chef Andrew Long, now also a partner at The Mast Farm Inn. Chef Andrew Long has for years created a following of enthusiastic diners in The High Country, Over Yonder is a new restaurant that tells the story of historic Appalachian cuisine in a picturesque setting atop the rolling hills and peaks of Valle Crucis, North Carolina at 3608 North Carolina Highway 194, across from the Original Mast General Store, formerly the location of the restaurant 1861 Farmhouse.

Over Yonder Co-​Founder, Partner and Executive Chef Andrew Long is a native son of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Andrew grew up with the aromas of celery, bell peppers, and onions in the kitchen to go along with the seafood that was in season at the time. After learning «the finer points of kitchen subculture» while working in the restaurants of New Orleans, he moved to Charleston, SC, where he attended Johnson & Wales University and graduated in Culinary Arts.

This was a great restaurant with delicious food in a wonderful setting. The trout was amazing and the salads and vegetables were fresh and delicious. The farmhouse has a lot of history and is beautiful. The surrounding area is very special. And the host was very friendly and accommodating. Overall a great evening!

This is the High Country’s hidden gem. Farm to table my rear… Kitchen to stomach is more like it! I love this place. It’s our new «go to» getaway whenever we visit our mountain cabin. It’s in an old, restored and charming farmhouse and just a few tables are scattered about in each of the original, cozy rooms. Some are complete with fireplaces, tumbled brick walls, hand-​blown glass windows, timber beams, etc. An intimate feel, despite being seated close to others. RESERVATIONS are a must. Try the flash-​fried okra. Anything on the menu is excellent, but I find that the savory dishes (especially those with a jelly or jam topping or marinade) excel. Ask for Lela to wait on you, despite the fact that she’s the manager, and to make your bar drinks, and be certain to tell her that «Ross» referred you. Come early and visit the original Mast General Store (not its annex) and sister shop directly across the street.

We were staying so close to this place and only wished we had visited this gem before. We brunched here for Easter and just loved every bite. I started off with their warm apple cider which was perfect for the chill morning. We then shared the pimento cheese platter made from local Ashe county cheese. You can’t go wrong with pimento :-) yum! I had th chicken pot pie and it was truly a southern comfort. Loved the crust and the filing. gave me such a warm n fuzzy feeling inside my husband ordered the quiche, now the texture of the quiche wasn’t the best I’ve had… but I liked the flavors and their salad with fig n pecans was great
Overall we left with a feeling of wishing to have dined here more often in the trip. Love it and won’t miss it for anything, the next time I’m in the area

Excellent. Southern style cuisine with great dessert options. Located across from mast General store in Valley Crucis. Located in an old farmhouse with historical significance. There is seating both inside and out. They also have a gift shop with local artist work available.

Came here for date night because my partner and I have heard great things about the place. Have to say I left feeling disappointed. Serving size for dinner was small for the price. Both dishes bland and in need of a lot of salt and pepper. My date ordered the chicken and «dumplings» special, which was actually a kind of chicken stew that came with very dry biscuits on the side. Bisquits are not dumplings here in the south. I ordered the crawfish étouffée and it was bland. Didn’t have much Cajun spice at all and grits were very bland. Over all not bad but not very good either. A solid «meh» that came with a 70 dollar price tag…

Phenomenal hidden gem, located in the mountains in a historic home. Coffee is bald guy brew which is delicious and their chicken fried chicken was the best I’ve had. Will be back next time I’m in the area.

Really neat old house setting. Lots of interesting art work and decorations. Started with the grilled okra, outstanding. Tried a «small plate» of etoufee, a little fishy for us but good seasoning. One entrée was the onion, tomato and provolone quiche. Highly recommend. My entrée was the turkey salad sandwich on ciabatta. Haven’t tried it yet, brought it home. Looked great. We both had the tomato bisque soup, very filling, perfect seasoning. I’ll get that again. Finished up with a marvelous peach cobbler. We’ll be back next time we are up in the high country.

Holy moly. Yes and yes. Food, pretty much like your grandma made and beer selection to compliment it all. What more could you really ask for? Oh, yeah a super nice and wide front porch to soak it all up on.
If in the area, this place is a must. I had the meatloaf and literally devoured every bit. Additionally, the beer was great with local and non-​local but craft selections. The service was awesome and the general feel of the place is laid back and relaxing.
I can’t wait to go back in the summer and really enjoy the front porch!

Over Yonder was a pleasant surprise. The food was served hot, it tasted great, the service was efficient, and the separate dining rooms made conversation possible. Loved the local art for sale on the walls as well. It added a homey touch. Add to all this a gluten-​free, dairy-​free menu for my husband, along with reasonable prices, we’ll definitely be back!

Great ambiance. Home cooking/​comfort food menu like Grandma would (hopefully) make. Could do with a little more flavor on some of the dishes. I had the Butternut soup-​creamy, but the flavor quickly became sort of «one note.» Gumbo was a low country style gumbo. Main course was pressed chicken (very much the same style as «brick chicken»), a decent dish. The side of green beans could have been better, the beans were inconsistent, some of them well cooked, some very tender, and some very crisp, barely steamed. It seems that the crowning glory of Over Yonder is the desserts, and they do not disappoint. The Blackberry Cobbler and Chess Pie are both exactly as Grandma would make them-​delicious and stick right to all the wrong spots! Too much temptation at Over Yonder, but still fun to indulge.

Stopped for lunch after visiting the original Mast General store by recommendation of their staff. Beautiful restaurant and charming ambiance, friendly staff.
My husband ordered the trout, sweet potato crunch and slaw. The trout was good, sweet potato was OK (not very sweet, the topping tasted like it was almost chewy as if it had been sitting out and reheated) and the slaw was so-​so. Overall, we felt for an $ 18 lunch item it was a bit disappointing. (However the tartar sauce served with the trout was smoked which I found delicious, but my husband felt overpowered the dish)
I ordered the quiche of the day along with the emiline salad. The salad was delicious and if I went back that’s what I would order. The dressing was probably the best I have Had! The quiche was good as well– much more worthy of the $ 12 price.
I would say overall our experience was good, but a lighter lunch menu would have been a nice option. Will probably not revisit for the price– however we enjoyed a one-​time experience. Very charming.

As pretty on the outside as it is on the inside, this historic location for nouveau Appalachian cuisine has all of the makings of fine dining at affordable prices.
Yes, the prices are affordable, but the food leaves a little to be desired in savory interest. Although tasty, the Skillet Chicken-​Fried Chicken was a bit bland. The breading is more like you would find on a chicken Parmesan, only without the Parmesan… or a majority of spices. I got the accompanying sawmill gravy on the side, which was very peppery, but didn’t add enough flavor to the entire dish to be worthy of my fried chicken respect. The whipped potatoes were very good, and the cheesy grits were outstanding!
I had a tough time deciding between the banana pudding and the chocolate chess pie, and eventually went with the pie. It was described to me as «brownie» like, but this was much more like chocolate custard in a piecrust, topped with ice cream. Although tasty, it wasn’t supremely interesting.
All in all, Over Yonder is picturesque, pretty, historic… and lacking in flavor. Allow me to mention, the service was outstanding. But I chose items that were recommended to me by my server as house specialties, so I expected them to be five star.

Just my kind of place. I can’t imagine anyone stumbling upon this place by accident. It isn’t near anything. An-​y-​thing. You either have to come across it on a search engine or be fortunate enough to have someone recommend it. We, happily, fell into the latter category when the proprietor of the B&B at which we were lodged told us it was a must-​try.
He was right. The young ladies who seated & waited on us couldn’t have been friendlier. Good omen. We can tolerate middling food if the service is good. This night we wouldn’t need to.
My wife ordered the night’s special, a ribeye in a light Gorgonzola tomato cream sauce. She’s not normally a fan of bleu cheese, but loved it. Said the sauce didn’t overpower the tender, well-​marbled steak. I started with roasted okra. Yes, roasted. Not fried. They get it really crispy with just salt & garlic – no breading. It may be heresy in these parts, but I might like that better than fried okra. My main dish was more okra. I’m a huge fan of grits, & love any variety of gumbo. Never had them together before. Their gumbo is a deep, rich green, with plenty of okra & filé. Earthy. Woodsy. Great combination.
I have no idea how this place can get enough traffic to stay in business given their remote locale, but if they’re here next time we’re in Boone, we’ll definitely be stopping in!

Over Yonder was one of the best meals we ate while visiting the high country. Our B and B owners highly recommended the restaurant and made a reservation for us for their favorite table. The staff was really nice and the old house was beautiful. When you sit down they give you a history of the place. They keep it casual and prices are reasonable. We heard good things about the pimento cheese and got that for the appetizer. It was so delicious. The fry bread makes it special and the chowchow on top was to die for. I could have eaten a bowl of it by itself. For my entrée I had their meatloaf with sweet potato casserole and butter beans. I did not like the butter beans because of too much pepper but the sweet potato casserole was excellent. It was not too sweet and had a good crunch from the nuts. The meatloaf was fantastic. They put it on the griddle to give it a crust and the cheerwine sauce was super yummy. My husband had the tomato pie and mac and cheese. I am not a huge mac and cheese fan but I loved theirs. It is very cheese but not dry. He liked the tomato pie. You need to get dessert here. I had their banana pudding and it was some of the best I have ever had. They serve it parfait style with a crunch crumble and homemade whipped cream. I would come here again just for that. Over Yonder is off the beaten path but well worth a trip.

We came in thanks to the reviews on Unilocal after spending the afternoon tubing at hawks nest. We were not disappointed – the food was as good as described!
We arrived as a group of 10 (6 tweens and teens, 4 adults), and were seated in the back dining room.
Most of the kids got the burger and all gave it a big thumbs up. Even my 11 year old daughter who tends to be picky finished almost the whole thing. They really enjoyed the pork chips that came as a side – they were so well-​seasoned and perfectly crisp. One chose the grilled cheese which did not disappoint – they do not skimp on the cheese and the bread is like Texas toast.
My friend described her Emaline salad as one of the best salads she’s ever had. I ordered the tomato cobbler with the soup of the day (pumpkin bisque with cumin and coriander) on the side. The cobbler was filled with chunks of tomatoes in a flavorful sauce and topped with a cheesy biscuit – it was wonderfully seasoned and so fresh tasting! The soup was outstanding: rich and thick and the seasonings were very light.
The men and my son all chose the chicken-​fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. The chicken was very moist and the coating was nicely crispy. The mashed potatoes are the kind with the skins on, and were garlicky.
We will absolutely return the next time we are in the area!

Just tried Over Yonder (owned by the people who own the Mast Farm Inn) and enjoyed it, a much needed higher end restaurant in «downtown» Valle Crucis. They describe the cuisine as Appalachian but I would call it more a cross between southern and modern American.
We really enjoyed the meal and would like to go again. I had the pan fried trout, which was excellent. Perfectly filleted, which is important to me as one bone can ruin a meal, and had an excellent coating. What I really enjoyed were the two sides. A sweet potato casserole that was not too sweet and very nutty, also great slaw (I forgot which kind, they had two listed on the sides). My wife had a tomato casserole that looked fantastic. Freshly grown local tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes. My wife also loved the fresh made lemonade with mint. Both my kids had the adult burger, which was very tempting, and served with freshly made chips. My only complaint what that there was no kids burger on the children’s menu and overall the kids menu was very limited.
The other thing to keep in mind is they have a limited and unique menu, so you may want to check it before being seated and make sure there is something you like. Everything is so good my guess is you would like it even if it does not seem familiar but something you should consider.
