History

Established in 1994.

Owner/​Founder of Zadie’s, Elzadie Smith, was born and raised in Tifton, Georgia. She, her husband of more than 30 years, G. Winston Smith, and their three children resided in Decatur, GA unitl Winston’s job transferred him to New Jersey. Relocating to Summit proved to be a momentous occasion for the Smith family. With children ages 10 months to 11 years, Zadie began looking for quality childcare comparable to the hands-​on service that her children received in GA. It was a near impossible task. After years of settling for what she considered was sub-​par care, Zadie began pursuing her vision of providing superior care for children of working parents. In 1994, Zadie opened her home to five babies. Quickly, the number of children grew to twenty and Zadie need more space. The Smiths would have to overcome many obstacles before the dream could be realized. In the fall of 2001, Zadie’s Nurturing Den opened its doors, providing a warm and nurturing place for more than 190 children.

Elzadie Smith believes that nurturing and educating are fundamental to the development of children… it is important to respect children as worthy people… adults should be concerned about the quality of development in each stage of a child’s life… we as caregivers should take time and adapt to each child’s unique way of communicating and learning… she understands the importance of modeling the behavior you want to teach and recognizing all challenges as learning opportunities.
