History

Established in 2007.

Tucked into a historic, cozy clapboard bungalow complete with a front porch, Windmill Bistro doesn’t need much to up its charm factor. But the gazebo and the Dutch-​style windmill that grace the view outside add a fairy-​tale touch to the scene. Inside guests can enjoy their dining experience seated next to the fireplace or perhaps up in the cozy loft. Regionally focused, fresh cuisine brings diners back again and again with dishes such as smoked-​salmon pasta, Dungeness crab melts, and Northwest Clam chowder, complemented by a special happy-​hour menu that lists favorite appetizers such as chicken skewers and flatbread pizza. When the weather’s warm, the hum of the crowd moves outside to the patio, where live music often livens up the excellent scenery most weekends.

Business Owner

Owner/​Chef Bruce has spent his entire career in the kitchen creating fabulous dishes. Starting at 15 years old he learned the art of the burger in his hometown of Duluth, MN. From there he moved to Phoenix, AZ and worked 25+ years as a chef in fine dining establishments such as the Royal Palms Resort and Camelback Inn prior to moving to Washington and taking ownership of the Windmill Bistro. With his motto of «Grand Simplicity, let the ingredients speak for themselves» we trust that your first visit with us, will be the first of many!

It was nice enough and the service was ok. But, my chicken and Walnut wrap was tasteless, claiming to have curry in it, it was light yellow but I couldnt taste it. I had to sprinkle salt and pepper on each bite. I had given up about a few bites in the second half. I chose the side of sliced fruit. The sliced fruit was thin slivers of honeydew, cantaloupe and pineapple. Not worth 12 $. I live out of state, so I doubt I will be back, even when I come home to visit.

The food was delicious, everything is made from scratch. I think the lunch menu is very reasonably priced.
The outdoor seating area is surrounded by gardens of beautiful flowers.
Our waitress (Kimberly) did a great job going over the menu with us and making suggestions and answering our questions.
I can’t wait to go back, so many menu items that I want to try there!

My guy and I love this place! It’s so charming and cute. We love to sit outside by the pretty view. Parking is so easy and accessible. Food is pretty darn good. We’ve ordered alot of things on the menu and have never been disappointed. Staff is also very friendly!

We came without a reservation and were seated within 10 min. The food was yummy. The corned beef hash could have something besides a scone. The eggs were cooked perfectly! The eggs Benedict were great. Service was on point too.

This place was amazing! We’ve lived in the area for 4 years now and always passed it but never stopped in. We saw they offered a Groupon so we decided to give it a go this past weekend. I called on Sunday morning to see if we needed a reservation but the hostess said there was currently no wait. We show up and ended up having a 15 minute wait (which was reasonable since it was Sunday morning around 10AM, busy busy!). That 15 minute wait went fast though since there was so much to look at! The gardens, the tea shop, the pond plants, and the HUGE nursery in the back. Getting back to the food though it all tasted fantastic and our server was very nice. I highly recommend this place — my family and I will definitely be going back to try the lunch and dinner menu selections, and I’ll be sure to bring along some friends.

I am so disappointed this wasn’t a good experience. I grew up across the street from the DeGoedes, babysat their children and when coming home for a weekend my sister and I set out for Sumner to visit this establishment. It wasn’t a restaurant when I was living in Sumner.
So we walked in — and granted, we had no reservation — but with three of us (my sister and me, and her 2 year old) and requested a table for 3. It took several minutes to even get someone to make eye contact — and when they did, they said, «it’ll be 45 minutes.» We looked around. In the entire dining area, there were three tables with people. The rest of the tables, including the upstairs, were empty. «Really?» I asked. «There are so many tables open.» «They’re reserved,» she said. OK. I can get that — but having been in the industry in my grad school days, I also know the reality of reservations and why most restaurants overbook to compensate for no-​shows. Regardless, I was determined to still patronize the establishment and suggested we get a mimosa and wait at the back bar.
«Um. We don’t normally do that.»
There was a bar in the back with stools that — again — were empty. Nor was there any attempt to give us a place to sit or wait in the overwhelmingly empty room. «You’ll have to stand.»
My patience had run out. So sad. Windmill has always been such a beautiful place and great brand and I’ve always been proud to support them. Maybe the manager was in a bad mood. Maybe she got a flat tire on her way in. Either way, it was clear they couldn’t care less if we had a good experience and we obliged them by simply leaving.
The place has great potential — but I’d recommend getting better policies and a staff who doesn’t act like paying customers are a huge inconvenience.

Everyone else in my group liked there food, so that is why it got the 4 instead of the 3 it would have gotten. There service was great, but the smoked salmon penne was not that great. The sauce was pretty much tasteless… And it didn’t cover up the saltiness of the smoked salmon… Don’t get me wrong I like smoked salmon but this one was a little too salty for my taste… I would not recommend that dish.

If you come here on a Sunday do yourself a favor and make a reservation. The hostesses were set frazzled and unorganized when I was there and I imagine having a reservation would have smoothed out several issues I had. The food itself is fantastic. I had the Crab Eggs Benedict and it was incredible. I will come back, but most likely it will be on a weekday when I’m not in a hurry.

On Friday, 04⁄01 I called the Windmill Bistro to place a to-​go order. No one answered. I called back three more times and still, no answer. I decided to collect all of my co-​workers orders for lunch and drive down there to place them and wait while they were prepared. Upon reaching the host desk, I am informed that the restaurant is too busy and they will not be taking any to-​go orders that day. I understand that it was an exceptionally warm day and many people are on Spring Break, however this should have been no surprise if anyone has paid any attention to the media. They had been talking about a warm whether streak for days.
I’ve been to the Windmill Bistro many times in the past and most times it’s been ok. After this last experience I’m not sure I’ll be back.
At a minimum, the Windmill Bistro needs to ensure that their phones are answered to avoid unnecessary time wasted to place an order at the restaurant only to be turned away.

It was a-​ok. A no-​frills place for a casual lunch with friends.
Given the high ratings I was a bit underwhelmed. It was surprisingly loud, especially for the middle of the week. It’s pretty much a big room with wooden floors so noise echoes (and there were a couple vocal kids while we were there).
Etc:
The sweet potatoes fries were quite tasty.
The Asian sesame salad (forget exactly what it’s called) was big and fresh, although a bit flavorless.
The clam chowder was standard.
The service was acceptable, but again, nothing special to note.
Maybe brunch is more exciting than lunch?

This is the kind of place every suburb should have!
I came down for some business and saw that this place takes the Passport Dining card so I thought why not give this place a shot? I ordered the chicken fried steak and a side of biscuit and gravy … but the most delightful part of the meal was that it came with a scone! I got a blueberry scone which came out nice and warm (protip: ask for some butter to go with the scone! It’s not any regular pre-​packaged butter.)
The service was delightful as well. If I am ever in the area again, I wouldn’t mind trying other parts of their menu. Oh yeah, they also offer free wifi! Just ask the server for the password :-)

Special menu for Valentines weekend. Fine. I’m a sucker for scallops, hadn’t planned on a $ 32 dinner (just a casual outing for us). But only THREE SCALLOPS?!? Are you kidding? Market value fresh at my fish market is $ 12.99/lb and you only give me 3??? I feel so taken advantage of, it’s disappointing! And it’s on a soupy pûrred cauliflower bed (I make the same thing at home, not worth the money). I’ve always considered them to have small portions, which isn’t a terrible thing, but this was TOO little for the cost and nothing special. Thanks no thanks.

We decided to get out of the house after a few days of being cooped up due to the rain, so we headed over to the Windmill Bistro as a recommendation from a friend. Luckily, they had available seating as it appears that it is best one have a reservation. We were seated upstairs, which turned out to be great since we had my 1.5 year old nephew in tow.
Our service was great. The waitress was very courteous and attentive. The four of us ordered bloody mary’s, of course, while we looked over the menu. The bloody mary’s were «ok.» They weren’t very strong and could have used a little more Worcestershire.
i will say that I had a VERY hard time deciding what to get because everything looked and sounded amazing. Being the creature of habit, I ordered the corned beef hash. I was not disappointed by this breakfast. The thick chunks of corned beef was perfectly seasoned and tasted home made, unusual for a lot of places. My friend had the eggs benedict. I sneaked a bite and was equally as pleased with that dish. The eggs were freshly poached, using the traditional method in boiling water (I’m surprised by how many places don’t do this). My sister had the Crab Omelet. I LOVE crab, but am always hesitant to order crab omelets because they can be a little too rich for my taste. She loved it. It was a little rich for my taste, but perfect for her. My nephew’s pancakes were delish as well.
Would we go back? Yes. Would I pass on the recommendation to others? Definitely.

Oh my! This little gem is my new place to go to! Tucked in a small little home in Sumner, this place has many different choices for Breakfast and lunch. Went for our 15th anniversary and had a BLT. Bacon was exceptionally crisp and delicious. Fries were cooked to perfection! Hubby had fish and chips and spent the entire time making happy sounds~
Next time my daughter visited, took her there and had the quiche and home fries. OMG. can you say «fabulous?»
Best place in the area and will go back time and again. Loved it.

I’ve been to the tea shop and the garden here but it was my first time at this Bistro for lunch today. I had French onion soup and and coffee mom had the windmill burger. The coffee and burger may be a bit pricy but they were still good. I loved the soup although it was a bit too salty or spicy from the pepper or herbs. But it was full of flavor and I loved it. And the sweet potato fries that came with the burger for additional $ 1 was worth it. Everything was warm and made us quite comfortable. The tables may have been a bit too close and it felt a bit noisy. It was pretty crowded on a Saturday lunch but the service was friendly and efficient.

Oh the food! Windmill Bistro is one of the few places I’ve dined where I eat every last morsel on my plate. The food is somehow filling and light at the same time. I suspect it’s because of quality ingredients and a very professional kitchen. I recommend the bruschetta in particluar.
I’ve only been seated out in the garden, so I can’t speak to the indoor dining experience. The gardens are absolutely gorgeous. The servers are all friendly and they really move at a good speed, so that you’re never left looking to find them inside.
If you can eat there while they have live music outdoors, do it! This is a wonderful spot on a summer evening to linger over a meal, and hear great music.

Who goes to Sumner just for lunch, especially when you live in Tacoma. We didn’t start out there but ended up here and found this little place off the beaten track in front of a plant nursery. The entrance is very inviting, looks like a craftsman bungalow and inside it’s one big room, bright and airy with very nice decorating touches. One draw back is that it’s very loud with the wood floors and not much to buffer the sound.
That said the food was really good. They have lots of options, salad, soup, sandwiches and some entrees. They also have a pick two of soup, salad and a half a sandwich and for those of us with smaller appetites it’s perfect. They always have clam chowder and french onion soup and today the special was a broccoli cheddar. I decided to have a half salad and half a sandwich. the salad was delicious. Had chunks of butternut squash, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, lots of different greens and a lovely vinaigrette dressing. My half a sandwich was billed as a caprese sandwich and tasted ok but the cheese wasn’t melted, just a chunk between the bread and was pretty cool so apparently the entire thing isn’t grilled, just the bread.
My friend had half a chop salad which looked really nice, I could see garbanzo beans and bacon in it. She opted for the cup of French onion soup and said it was really good. Of course neither of us had room for dessert.
Since it was rainy we didn’t wander back to the nursery but on a pleasant day that would be a nice addition to walking off lunch.
