My 76-year-old granddad was diagnosed with rectal cancer and given a survivable prognosis. He even drove himself to chemo and radiation. Stud. They shrunk the cancer small enough to remove it, but a few weeks before his surgery, he started falling over and couldn’t walk. It was found that the cancer spread to his brain; he was given 2 months. Since New Vista was down the street from my house, I spent many many hours here making sure he was treated well. I got to know and interact with a lot of the staff. Overall, most were very friendly, attentive and patient with him(and us) as he started to become a little more difficult and his body and mind deteriorated. He’s a big guy at 6’2″ 210lbs and two tiny women could roll him over to clothe him, change him, etc, without causing too much pain. It’s what they’re trained to do. The nurses talked to him like he was a baby at times, but working with 100’s of patients a day, I can’t really blame them. It’s never easy watching a loved one deteriorate, but my family and I were ok with New Vista and have no big complaints or regrets(other than him not being able to be home when he passed). He passed away almost 2 months exactly after his prognosis. They were very apologetic and gave their condolences. He enjoyed a lot of Taco Bell, KFC, pizza, donuts, cookies and Starbucks while there(he was happy with their food, too). The staff probably thought he was nuts, but if you’re gonna go out and still have a crazy appetite like he did, go out stuffing your face hole with crap! Miss you.
