McGuinness’s Bar

One of the last old style bars left in Sunnyside on Queens Blvd. On the small side, and no food available, but its a throwback to the past, before Sunnyside became an up and coming neighborhood (which isn’t bad). Good bar staff, and nostalgia combine to make this place one of my stops when I am wandering around the neighborhood.

Great guinness, even nicer bartenders. Very accommodating if you want a certain game on. Certainly worth a try.

You definitely get that «saloon» feel as soon as you walk through the double doors. McGuinness’ is a nice Irish Pub. They have a specialty tap for Guinness, which as a big Guinness drinker is awesome.
Ironically, I passed this place 100 times with my best friend, whose family lives in Sunnyside, and it took meeting a good friend of mine that bartends here and at a favorite bar of mine in the city to get me here.
I mostly come for him but of the rest of the bartending staff I met, everyone seems warm and welcoming.
I’m slowly reaching regular status here.

Naill is a the pefect tap-​minder. Always a fun mix of locals and industry cats in here. Open early AND late. Good people and prices for my favorite local Irish bar in Sunnyside. And there is a dart board!

What a terrible place to be… Complete dive. I guess I didn’t order a beer quick enough so the bartender told me that I was a waste of space sitting at a table. Bartender should seek a different field of employment.

What a dive. Came here as a group of 9. I was the designated driver and when I asked for a water I was told no and that I was «wasting space». Never coming here again.

I don’t mind this place. Sometimes it’s quiet here I like that when I drink. Kind of a dive bar but a good drinking place.

Niall is a great bartender. The service is great along with the music and atmosphere. I met the owner who is also super nice and welcoming. It’s a great place to unwind and hang out. They also have great prices. Definitely check this place out!

Guinness that actually tastes like it does at home — a must try. I came in with the family and met Ciaran behind the bar who was very friendly.

Friendly bartender when I visited. Poured me a free shot as I stood up to leave, and took one with me. Tipped well for attentive, responsive service.

Stopped in there whilst visiting some friends in New York.
The locals were friendly and bought my girlfriends and I some drinks… always a nice thing.
The bartender was attentive and kept our drinks coming.
Loved the mural on the back wall.
Went back the next day to meet another friend and during the day time they were showing the horse races so we had some fun with that too.
I had fun there!

Straight up dive bar. Not as bad as Subway Inn. That’s about it.

Another generous 3, I might just be in a slightly wistful and vaguely homesick sort of humour given today’s date and the fact that half of New Jersey is probably out celebrating their negligible Irish ancestry by vomiting all over Manhattan. Anyhow, I was informed that McGuinness’ pulls a decent pint of Guinness. It’s a good pint by New York standards — it’s still watery though, and has that gross metallic, chalky taste. Beer just doesn’t taste good when it has to traverse the Atlantic, get reconstituted in New Brunswick, and then hit the road for NY. None of this is McGuinness’ fault.
My problem with McGuinness’ is that it seems, at least on first impressions, to be full of bores. The kind of old drunks who sit around all day boring the arse off Irish Americans who have come to consult the elders on all things Irish. The bartender was a nice chap, but then he grabbed his iPhone and exclaimed ‘here we go, lads!’ and lashed on The Dropkick Murphys at deafening volume — I know you’re delighted that you don’t have to live in Tipperary anymore, but calm the fuck down.

The ultimate losers lounge on Queens Boulevard. Mostly populated with grizzled, grumpy regulars staring at the television and sipping light beer. Very few women. Probably the least friendly pub in the neighborhood –it’s all about the tv and horse races. Bartenders incapable of much beyond pulling a pint, including making conversation. Late-​night smoking allowed. Pass on by.

Hardcore pub with hardcore drinkers. Open and starts serving at 7:30 — 8:00am Monday thru Saturday and you will usually not be the first one in the door. Drinks are poured with a heavy hand and tips and every three drinks are appreciated with a buy-​back. Queens prices. A JackNCoke runs less then five bones.
