When I was ~25 yrs old, a friend referred me to Dr Yu. I’d never had a cavity before. Dr Yu filled a few cavities for me, I had a lapse of a few years not going to a dentist, and the next visit showed about 8 cavities that needed fillings! I was alarmed at the cost and amount of work, and ignored it. For years. Actually a decade no dental visits (my bad).
Fast forward 10 years with no dentist visits at all and a different dentist says I have NO cavities that need to be filled!!! What??? That was a few years ago, and I still haven’t had cavities since then (I get cleanings/​check-​up every 6 – 12 months now). I did have to have one of his fillings replaced after about 12 years.
I still have the paperwork from Dr Yu’s office showing all the marked spots where I had cavities to be filled. Is Dr Yu a drill-​and-​fill dentist? Maybe he has become more conservative in the last 10 – 15 years. Maybe the state of the art at that time was more aggressive to fill things that didn’t need to be filled. Maybe my original fillings were genuinely necessary. Or maybe I’d be 40-​something today with zero cavities if I had never gone to his office.
In any case, you should get a second opinion. I had no other problems with Dr Yu, was probably happy with his work at the time, but suggesting a lot of expensive work that was not needed is a major major issue.

Dr. Yu has been my family dentist for more than 30 years. He is very professional and honest. I have total trust in his work. I couldn’t think of having a better dentist. The hygienists at the office are also very helpful and professional.

I went to Dr. Yu based in on the positive reviews on Unilocal!and I’m very glad that I did. Dr. Yu is an excellent and caring dentist. I’ve always have big fear about going to the dentist because of a bad childhood experience with a dentist in SF. Dr. Yu put me at ease and told me that the shot will not hurt. He kept his words, the numb shot was a breeze. I didn’t feel any pain. I was very amazed that i didn’t feel anything during my 2 fillings and root canals. I believed I finally found my favorite dentist. I’m actually looking forward to my next check up. Thank you Dr. Yu.

I love this place. I live in SF now but still head back to my roots in San Jo for the important stuff. I can’t believe someone wrote that the front desk didn’t help with insurance. WTF? I personally hate dealing with insurance and the woman on the phone was so helpful, patient and nice. She spent ages trying to help me navigate insurance hell. Going to the dentist is not something I tend to enjoy, but everyone is just really nice here, and Dr. Yu always has the newest stuff making the appointments go by faster :)

Referred to Dr Yu through 1800 dentist and was informed that he accepted metlife PPO. Got 2 cavities filled and made my payment the same day. Then 4 months later I get a $ 300 bill in the mail stating that I didnt meet my deductible and that they were an out-​of-​network provider so my insurance only paid a portion. I have never had a dentist lack information or fail to provide accurate payment information in my life!!! WILL NEVER GO SEE HIM AGAIN!!!

So I just had a cleaning, and here comes Elvie with some lighted pen camera. She took a pic of each tooth and then Dr. Yu, lookin’ like RoboCop, comes in with some sort of head mounted light … shows me the pics of each tooth on screen.
He shows me which teeth might need re-​filling due to cracks (don’t tell him i use my teeth to crack crab… but i think he already knows!). He also informs me that when he does refill, he’s going to use a new ceramic blah blah something that matches… etc. Sorry, I trust Dr. Yu so implicitly that I generally just smile and nod.
They also now have an in-​house crown making thingy…(shrug), so no more making TWO appointments, they can make your crown right then and there.
Pretty cool. I love this dentist and recommend him highly.

I’ve been coming to Dr. Yu since I was a kid. He has always been very warm, able to put the patient at ease, and gentle with any work that needs to be done. His hygienist, Farrah is lovely too, always there with a smile!
He always answers questions thoroughly and he’s been doing this for a long time so he’s both knowledgeable as well as experienced. Prepping for a filling, he numbs the surface of the gums before even injecting any anesthesia so you don’t even feel the needle going in. I appreciate that he’s honest about the work that needs to be done (never tries to do more than is necessary), gives advice regarding the different products that are out there, and he’ll tell you whether they work or not so you don’t waste your money.
I highly recommend Dr. Yu if you’re searching for a new dentist.

I’ve had the best two experiences here at Dr. Yu’s. My teeth were not doing so well and Dr. Yu was so nice and didn’t make me feel at all embarrassed. Since I saw him, I tried to keep my teeth clean by flossing and I also bought an electric sonic care. I forgot the other lady’s name, who cleaned my teeth the 2^nd time, and she was so sweet and caring. Both secretaries are also very helpful and friendly. I live in Fremont and will still drive to Sunnyvale for my cleanings and exams because I feel taken care of here. Thanks.
