Elegant Floors

I am as please as can be with the work Elegant Floors did to my hardwood oak floor. They guided me through what I needed because of my pets and helped me with selecting the correct stain color for my floor to match my interiors. Mending and replacing of formerly dog-​soiled wood planks were done so perfectly. Rubin and Brian worked hard to do an excellent job. My family all commented how nice it was and really enjoyed walking on my new floor in their stocking feet.
I did have to chase after them to return my doors to their hinges and to place the new wooden vents to their locations, but they did so cheerfully, after they realized they forgot to do this last piece of the job.
Teri, the coordinator, was easy to talk to and knew her job.
It was a very pleasant experience for me to work with Elegant Floors. I felt that they were like family and easy to be with.

I just finshed quite a long and painful experience with trying to get my hardwood floor polished, so there are a sequence of reviews for the flooring companies I approached.
Elegant Floor was responsive in coming out to appraise the work. Scott was professional, although a little bit difficult to approach. He actually suggested redoing some of the transitions, which we had not even thought about. Thanks to this suggestion, I was able to add this request to subsequent appraisals.
Elegant promised to get back to me with a quote, which they did not. I called to request one, at which point they prepared and sent one to me. I then followed up twice to try to schedule a time to do work, and both times there were no response (I have the email thread as proof, not to mention multiple messages left with them).
I suppose there is just too much demand in the valley for these services, but I think at the minimum it’s common courtesy to let potential customers know that you’re too booked as opposed to simply not responding.

If I could give Scott Miller and his office coordinator, Terri, 10 stars, I would. I’m a real estate agent and have recommended Scott for years, his work is excellent and I’ve had many happy clients call me and let me know how satisfied they’ve been with his work. I met Scott again today when he came to do an estimate for me for a house in Campbell – it was rush hour traffic and he kindly called me a couple of times to give me updates on his arrival time. Scott is courteous, highly knowledgeable and always has a smile. Even though he’s super busy I never have felt he’s rushed an estimate – if there are any changes he offers to come back and look at the job again to provide an updated estimate. Scott is also helpful with suggestions that will save my clients money, like how to handle baseboards! There have been times when my clients have changed their minds at the last minute and decided not to sell… Scott has never made them or me feel bad for last minute cancellations! I recently had the pleasure to sell my son a home… he wanted the floors redone… guess who I used… you’ve got it, Scott… another excellent job done and another happy customer (and he even told me we didn’t need to replace the floor unless we didn’t like it; imagine, he thought of my son’s needs before making a sale!!!). Unless my clients specifically ask, I never get another estimate… I know that Scott will do an excellent job and I know that he will look after my clients! Thank you Scott and Terri for all your diligence and professionalism!

Scott came for an estimate. Was rude and wouldn’t let me finish any sentences when I asked questions. I had to call/​chase them several times to even get an estimate. The estimate came and the price was relatively low, so I scheduled the work.
Called to clarify the scope, and got no response. Chased them again and finally got Scott on the phone — he wanted to walk through the house again for a «second opinion» that could change the terms — all four days before the work was scheduled to start. Again, wouldn’t let me finish my sentences and said it was unreasonable to ask questions over the phone (my questions pertained to what aspects of work could change upon their «second opinion»). Said that if I had any objection to their changes, or needed answers to questions in any form other than in person, then they wouldn’t be willing to do the job.
If Scott wasn’t qualified to generate a reliable estimate, then he should have demurred and asked for a second opinion upfront, rather than after an estimate was already provided and four days before the project was supposed to start. I suspect that the second opinion would have yielded a higher fee estimate, which we’d have felt pressure to accept since we’d have been so close to the start date. Fortunately, we’re not in a rush to get the work done, so had the flexibility to say no. Not everyone would have been so lucky. At best, this was incompetence; at worst, a very shady tactic. In all cases, very disappointing considering the other reviews here.
Summary: I was disappointed with: (i) the rudeness with which I was treated at every stage; (ii) unresponsiveness and having to call multiple times to get an estimate; (iii) attitude that asking questions about timing & cost are unreasonable; and (iv) re-​start of process four days before the work was supposed to start, either due to incompetence or to extract more fees.

Elegant Floors recently completed our hardwood floors and I am extremely pleased with the results. When we started ripping out existing old carpet, we found red oak floors that were in reasonably good condition, but the dining room had old linoleum that had to go. Scott very patiently explained that the new oak we wanted in the dining room would not match the yellowed existing floors. There was damage of the wood in the hallway, in addition. He gently convinced us that we would be happier with the result if we refinished the whole house to match the new hardwood sections and he was right ! He worked with us over many meetings until we made plans. that accommodated our needs. He consulted his installer for the best way to blend in the «log cabin» corners and helped us economize where we could. He was very low pressure and I felt he truly wanted us to be satisfied. He helped us choose a stain that brings out the natural beauty of the grain. I was ready to forgo that step to save money, but when I saw the difference in a sample area on my floor, I knew he was right. The kitchen was sealed off very well during the sanding and dust was at a minimum due to a special vacuum system they used. We were very impressed with the quality of the work, and any minor glitches, which are to be expected in a project this size, were handled professionally. I would definitely recommend them for refinishing and installation of hardwood floors.

Our floors are beautiful and were installed promptly on the date we specified. However, they still haven’t come back to install a wood strip between our master bath tile and hardwood floor. We’ve called several times. They are always very polite and say they will come soon. Now it’s been since May — 3 months…

After reading mostly five-​star reviews on Unilocal and a personal friend’s reference, we hired Elegant Floors to refinish our living room, dining room, and hallway hardwood floors. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience with Scott and his company and feel we need to document this for future customers.
We asked that this work coincide with our one-​week vacation and were told by Scott that this would easily be possible and would only take 3 – 4 days. We were given a start date of June 24, 2015, arriving between 8 – 10 AM in our contract. We did have a close friend oversee the job while we were away, and he was readily available for Scott to contact, and was available on-​site every day. On that Wednesday, June 24, while in the airport on a layover, we received a call from our friend stating that no one showed up. After several phone calls trying to get in touch with Scott, he said they had personnel and equipment problems and may not be able to start even the next day. He was told that in no uncertain terms the job needed to be finished while we were away from the house, and they did show up late the following day. These workers were not well equipped and did not even have a utility knife to cut and remove the carpets. They also did not have a nail set and started using a Philips screwdriver! Fortunately, our friend was able to find these tools in our garage and allowed the workers to use them. Their understanding and capability of speaking the English language was nonexistent, leading to even further issues with communication. Therefore, our transitions into the kitchen and bedroom areas were left unfinished until our return home.
Upon our return, we noticed that patches in the wood were filled in with a pink-​colored putty, the finish was very uneven, and there were gouges in three separate locations. After placing a call to Scott at 8 AM, he told us he would «get back to us.» After no response, we placed another phone call at 4:30 PM and he finally showed up at 6 PM to evaluate the situation. He agreed there was still work to be done.
Another crew was sent over to finish the very poor job that the first crew attempted. One of the gouged areas was replaced with new boards. At the end of the day we were looking at what we thought was a decent job, only to see that this area blended in very poorly with the existing hardwood due to bad sanding/​staining. When Scott stopped by 2 days later to check on this, his first word to us upon looking at the area was «REALLY?!?» Not a very professional comment and we felt like he thought we should accept this once again poor job.
Along with poor workmanship and several communication issues between Scott and us, we felt he overstepped his professional line when he called our friend after our return and questioned why he didn’t do his job in overseeing HIS (Scott’s) own workers. Really?!?
Another issue was the type of payment Scott requested/​demanded. Even though it states they accept credit cards in their contract, Scott highly «requested» that we pay him with a check due to some issues they were having with the bank. This is another questionable issue with how Elegant Floors is being run.
Finally, after 3 ½ weeks our floors did get finished, but, as stated above, we could never give them a future recommendation.

We recently removed carpet from two bedrooms and decided to have the hardwood floors underneath refinished professionally. There were nail holes and stains, along with some damage from termites.
The project organizer, Teri, was very friendly and I felt comfortable asking questions.
The entire process only took two days, and we are very pleased with the results. Carlos and his crew were very nice and clean, they didn’t leave any mess behind for us to clean up. I was concerned about dust but they kept it under control.
We are very happy with our new floors and would definitely hire Elegant Floors again.

I decided to remove the last remaining carpet in the house, the living room. I found Elegant Floors on Unilocal and decided to get an estimate based on the high Unilocal ratings. I also got two other estimates and Elegant Floors was comparable. Scott came out and reviewed the job. I have hardwood in all rooms including the hallway and entryway. A major concern for me was the color matching to the rooms and the transitions to the hallway. Scott assured me they could match up the colors, which they did. Another concern were the previously installed baseboards. After the removal of the carpet the baseboards were a good inch above the hardwood. Several options were presented, including removal and reinstallation of new baseboards, which they would paint. I choose a 2″ trim to cover the gaps. The trim was painted, cut and installed beautiful. Elegant Floors did a great job without price overruns. I recommend Elegant Floors.

I used Elegant Floors to facilitate removal of old carpet and installation of a hardwood floor in our master bedroom. I really enjoyed working with the owner Scott and project Coordinator Terri. They were both so easy to work with.
Scott is very knowledgeable, and made the whole process run smooth. I will be using them for all my flooring needs as they are dependable, fair, nice and professional.

I had this firm installing some T&G fossilized bamboo floors in my home. They used staples to firm the wood to the subfloor. The staples damaged several planks (where the staples created visible bumps/​cracked to the wood which are very visible under the light).
Any high-​end firm would have checked for these pieces and replaced them on the spot during installation. Unfortunately this didn’t happen on my project. As a result my floor is decent (mainly because the material is very nice) but it presents several areas showing unnatural bumps/​cracks in between panels. Definitively not a high end job.

I am very impressed with the work and friendly cooperation I received from Elegant Floors. I recently purchased a mobile home that was in need of new flooring. I decided that a long term investment of hardwood floors would suit my needs over carpet that quickly gets stained and worn.
Scott came out and explained to me the process and provided me an estimate for the work. He also provided me names of good people to help paint my home as well as temporarily move my furniture to facilitate the floor installation. He kept me duly informed when there was any changes to the installation plan and costs.
I love my new floor and feel good about the investment i made. i would recommend them to anybody who wants to make a sound investment in their home.

We called Elegant Floors last year to have our floors refinished at our home in Los Altos. We did get a few bids, Elegant Floors was not the cheapest or most pricey… we decided to go with Elegant Floors. I cannot begin to share how happy I am for so many reasons. First and foremost the quality of their work is like I have never seen. The professional crew, the truck that extracts the dust (that’s right, almost NO dust remained), the neatness and timeliness. The results were GORGEOUS floors… just beautiful workmanship. His crew was so great …
When our refrigerator was moved, they found several boards that had rotted… they called me, we agreed to replace the boards. The match was perfect. Scott was my main contact and he is so professional and his years of knowledge were better than anyone I had been referred to. He knows the valley very well and that leads me to my other compliment:
The trim at the bottom of my cabinetry and along the wood floor was old and tired — definitely needed to be replaced. Elegant Floors took care of that and when it came time to re-​stain the trim, it was difficult to find the right color match. Scott referred me to a paint match «goddess» in San Jose that matched it perfectly — then Elegant Floors found the painter to do the job. ALL (I mean ALL) of the vendors Scott referred me to were stellar… and they thought the same of Elegant Floors. They all said what a great company it is… and they are correct. You will be very happy with the results!
I wouldn’t hesitate — save yourself the time of getting bids…
(Note: I also had some carpet replaced and they did a great job!)

We had our hardwood floors resurfaced and the work done by this company was good.
They were detailed and efficient in their work.
There was some slight damage to a window screen, but it was minor and I did not make a big deal about it.

Quite recently we had our master suite floors done by Elegant Floors. Scott was the first contact in early April 2014. He bid on the job and got the contract from us on the same day. This is because we had done our homework on multiple sources, and got bids from 2 others. We concluded that these guys were our best bet. We were NOT disappointed. The bid was very reasonable. The responsiveness of the organization including Teri, the management, work supervisor, and the work crew were spot on. and quality of the finished product is amazing. This includes our request for use of white rip oak that came in with premium pricing, but worth every penny of the cost.
The job was finished on May 16, 2014. Their price quoted was for 3 water-​based finish coats. But I was not pleased with the smoothness of the floors after 3 coats. I called Terri with this issues. Within an hour, 5 people including Scott showed up at our door. The supervisor and crew did a complete inspection and decided that I had a point. They did another screen and finish coat the same day. By 4 PM, I had the exact finish I wanted. On that day, Scott asked me to provide reference to another potential client, which I was happy to do. I provided a very factual reference to that client. I truly hope they got the job.
Bottom line, my wife and I are very happy with what Elegant has done here. We have a bunch of floors in the rest of this house that need to be re-​finished. Elegant will absolutely be on top of the list of vendors for that next job. But I will check their performance before I give them the job. Given what I have seen, I am quite sure they will continue to have high rated performance.

EF did a small job for us, fixing/​repainting our HW floor in the hallway. They were able to match the color to the existing floor (very challenging) perfectly, which is very impressive.
They were not too accurate with the time estimates (how many days/​nights the project will take). But, with wood coloring/​sanding, etc., time can vary with weather/​humidity, etc.
Overall, a bit expensive, but very satisfied.

After we got our floors refinished, a few days later raised bubbles were appearing in the hardwood. This was around November and I think it was too cold or something about the weather just didn’t jibe with the hardwood. Nothing that Elegant floors did wrong.
They came out and redid the floors a year later. It was a pain to have to move our furniture to get them redone, but thankfully they did it free of charge.
My advice is if you’re getting your floors refinished, get them done when it’s warm — they dry faster and you probably won’t get bubbles.

Scott is the main guy to talk about money and in general what’s to be fix. Knowledgeable for sure to quote and arrange the work.
I will have to worked with one of his superior, Brian on the actual date on details on how the work will be carried out, design and color, timing of the work, and how we like the work to be fixed.
Brian is great guy to work with. He has a hard working and professional team.
Clean up after every working day; give you advice on what to do and what to expect the next day, etc.
If it is not for a small communication issue with Scott, they definitely deserve a 5 stars rating.

I am back on Unilocal to sing the praises of what I think is the most amazing hardwood floor company in the Bay Area! Elegant Floors has now completed three jobs for us – each one more impressive than the next! They installed a gorgeous and heavily patterned hardwood in our upstairs bedroom and seriously – it looks like a piece of art. They sanded and refinished our entire downstairs after our recirculating hot water line burst and warped the entire floor – it is simply gorgeous and you would never know that any damage had occurred. This last job, though, is the one in which Elegant Floors worked miracles.. .
Our rental property is a 1960’s ranch style home which had been carpeted since the early 80’s. Tenant after tenant has lived in this house with a menagerie of dogs and cats (as animal lovers, we insist that our renters HAVE animals). After our last tenants moved out, we went over to assess what would need to be done for our dear friends to move in (in two months, no less)…
Upon entering the house, the smell of animal urine literally stung our eyes and noses. It was BAD. With this home being a rental, we decided that the cheapest route in remedying this would be to call, say, a Home Depot, and have them pull up the damaged floor and lay some laminate. The «cheap» estimate? ALMOST $ 13,000!
We pulled up the carpet ourselves to have a look at the floor underneath. It was hardwood, alright – saturated with animal pee hardwood. Huge dark spots covered the floor. We decided that it couldn’t hurt to give Elegant Floors a call, because if we were going to spend a bunch of money, it may as well be to people we know and trust. Within 24 hours, Scott, the owner, was at our place. His word? «Wow.» And then he placed a call to his foreman, Brian. Brian cam right over. Together, we walked through the house. I kept talking about laminate, and finally, Brian asked, «Well, what do you WANT?» I said I wished we could save the hardwood. And Brian said, «Well, then – let’s save the hardwood!»
It took seven days for nearly 1500 feet of pee-​stained, staple-​filled hardwood to be turned into literally one of the most beautiful floors I had ever seen. We chose a mahogany stain that would hide any urine stains they couldn’t get out, but those were so minimal by the time they were done that we could have glossed those floors and they would have looked beautiful. They replaced a couple of the worst pee-​saturated areas (about 4 square feet total), but seriously – that was it.
The best part? Gorgeous floors and not a whisp of urine scent anywhere! Our good friends moved in with their cats, and those cats have no idea the house was pee-​saturated before (and cats have the most amazing sense of smell). So all you people out there looking for a flooring company who will finish dust free AND on time AND under-​budget (the entire project came in at just over half of what Home Depot quoted – FOR LAMINATE – and, we got new baseboards, too!!) AND will solve even what you think are the most impossible issues related to flooring, HIRE THIS COMPANY! They seriously are the most dedicated, skilled group of professionals with who I have had the pleasure of working!

It pains me to write a one-​star review, especially given all the great reviews that are posted for Elegant Floors. Unfortunately for my wife and I, we didn’t get what we asked for.
First the good news — the team at Elegant was fast and courteous. The showed up on time, kept our home free of dust and worked diligently. Unfortunately the end result was not what we wanted.
Part of our floor refinishing included removing staples that were previously holding down a carpet pad. Our agreement included removing these stapes, and the phrase «remove tack strips and staples» was on our signed agreement. Unfortunately the team at Elegant decided to nail the staples into the floor and cover them with putty. This resulted in slivers of bare metal showing when the final sanding was completed, or wedges of off-​color putty. For some staples they had used a heavy metal tool which was scraped over the wood, shearing off some staples and causing wood damage in the process.
We had also agreed to pay nearly double our original estimate to replace all damaged wood with new boards. While a large section of water-​damaged wood was replaced, the boards with staple damage in them were not. There was also an end-​joint in the middle of the floor that was not flush, and there was a visible gap between those boards. We were expecting damage free wood everywhere.
When we asked for resolution the proposal from Elegant was to push the staples down further in the floor and put on more putty. We went round and round on this proposal before they finally agreed to replace the worst of the damaged wood. My wife felt pressured by Elegant to accept putty as the right solution when she wanted the damaged wood replaced. After a bit of thinking we decided to hire someone else to replace the damaged wood. We just didn’t feel comfortable going forward with repairs given the quality of work done and the pressure to avoid doing a complete replacement.
The other contractor we hired told us that they had never seen anyone attempt to pound staples into wood and putty over them. The other team resolved our issues quickly by replacing and refinishing the damaged wood and now the floors look great.
Elegant did give us a small discount for our trouble, and we appreciate the gesture, but it was a case of too little too late.
If you’ve read this far you are probably wondering if you should hire Elegant. I can only imagine that given the many positive reviews elsewhere for this business you might have better luck than we did. We hired them based on their reviews and it looks like they have done a good job for many people. I realize that everyone has their good days and bad, and I would hope our case was a special circumstance for Elegant that won’t happen again.
