Established in 1946.

Sunnyvale Optometry was the first optometry established in Sunnyvale, California! The practice was build to provide quality vision care to the local community and surrounding regions where there was none.

Business Owner

Dr. Mark Ichikawa graduated from UC Berkeley School of Optometry with highest honors and was the recipient of the contact lens excellence award in his 1984 graduating class. He is an active member of the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Mai Nguyen earned her doctorate degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Dr. Nguyen joined Sunnyvale Optometry in 2004 where she enjoys family practice, working with children and providing specialized services such as Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT). She is a member of the Santa Clara County Optometric Society, California Optometric Association and AOA.

Dr. Cindy Tran earned her doctorate degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in 2001. She enjoys general family practice and is an active member of the SCCOS, COA and AOA.

Dr. Joanne Gwo is a graduate of the UC Berkeley School of Optometry. She currently works part-​time at Sunnyvale Optometry. She is an active member of SCCOS, COA and AOA.

My kids have been coming here for the past 3 years. The doctors here are attentive and work really well with young children. My daughter recently moved into contact lenses, and they were patient as they worked with her as she made her first attempts at putting them in. They are very clear about the costs associated with treatment, and have always provided us with accurate quotes for the glasses and the lenses. I might consider moving my own care here.

This was my first visit at Sunnyvale Optometry. I found Dr. Bich (Bic) Ngoc Trinh very patience and did a detail checkup of my eye. I wanted to just change my glasses and thought it would be quick. But she was good in probing me about eye condition and what I should do based on my daily working style. This helped me understand what kind of glasses would work best for me. She demonstrated me how using an work only glass will help me reduce stress on my eye during my long working hours with my laptop and honestly I was amazed. Even though it was not part of her job she was kind enough to provide me a lot of information and recommendation on Lasik.
Overall it was an excellent experience …

I had gotten LASIK surgery done 4 years back but recently I started experiencing blurred vision and eye strain. I wanted to get my eyes tested and visited Sunnyvale Optometry since they had good reviews on Unilocal.
They quickly tested my eyes for prescription glasses and glaucoma and any tear in the retina and focus and general eye health. I met Dr. Trinh. She was extremely nice and friendly and had a very pleasing personality. She told me that my eyes are healthy but I have a slight prescription and astigmatism. She wrote me a prescription for part time glasses.
I chose to get the glasses at the store itself. They have a wide range and I chose two glasses. Then once I left I realized I just wanted one so I called them back and they were gracious enough to cancel one of my orders.
The tests were quick and effective. I had to go back to work and they did not make me wait and were quick. I was reassured that the LASIK hadn’t turned rouge and my eyes were in good shape.
Definitely a good place to go for regular eye check ups.

This is my first time to see Dr. Mai Nyguan and l think she is very good optometrist Doctor that l meet Dr. Mai Nyguan is always patient and has no problem sharing the different things she’s trying. She talked very nice and looked happy all the times.
l will tell all my family and friends to come see Dr. Mai Nyguan and l all way come back to see her year after year… and ever!!!

Hubby came here for the first time because it was covered by his insurance and he saw the high ratings on Unilocal.He said it was the best eye exam experience that he has ever had.
He said the front desk staff were all very friendly and greeted him promptly. Since it was his first visit, he had to fill out extensive forms — which he liked because it showed they want to know about their patients and not rush them in and out, like some places.
After waiting only a few minutes he was brought to another room by a doctor’s assistant who gave him four different tests on some fancy new machines. After they were done, he was taken to the doctors office for his full examination.
Again, he only had to wait a few minutes and Dr. Trinh arrived. He said she took her time and made sure that he was seeing clearly with the machine. Afterward, she put drops in to dilate his eyes and after a 15 minute wait checked his eyes. He was also impressed that she took the time to explain all of the tests and results and why they were done. She was very thorough in her explanations.
Overall, he said it is the best experience he has ever had with an optometrist and will be a regular annual patient. As good as it gets!

really bad experience
I have my regular eye check done there for 2 years
I had an emergency today with my eye and they basically rejected to see me claiming no doctor can see me.
For the one appointment i had earlier this year, the doctor asked me to do an extra test in 2 weeks, and without taking the extra test, the doctor called me telling me test results nobody knows where the result is from. And the reason i did not take the extra test is i forgot to mark it in my calendar but there is also no reminder or whatever from the office.

This office is clean, organized, and has a professional, competent and friendly staff. I had my eye exam with Dr. Gwo. She is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Dr. Two takes time to explain all aspects of the eye exam, and she makes it fun!
Every staff member was a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend this facility!

My husband and I had a Dr’s appointment here and we also bought 3 pairs of glasses. The Dr. seemed very professional and was extremely nice but the staff were awful. They were not friendly at all and let us feel like a great inconvenience. Now it’s been over 3 weeks since we bought our glasses (for quite a few hundreds dollars) and they are still not ready (Only 1⁄3 is ready).

Great experience. It is a much bigger Optometry office that I am used to since they have multiple doctors, but it made the experience really fast and painless. I highly recommend using Sunnyvale Optometry. I also ordered glasses from them and the experience was great. It was so much faster than usual and the woman who walked me through the process was very friendly, super clear about my options and I didn’t feel like she was trying to upsell me which was really nice.

I wish I could give two separate reviews. One for Dr Nguyen, who is awesome. She’s extremely thorough, thoughtful, and nice. I’ve gotten my most comfortable pair of contacts ever from her.
However, do not get glasses from this place. They’ve screwed up at every turn. I have had glasses since I was a toddler, over thirty pairs now (including wearing bifocals for a few years), and none have given me issues like the ones they tried to give me. The prescription didn’t even change very much, but I could see better with no glasses than the ones they tried to give me.
I had to take off work four times to come in. They gave me a second appointment with Dr Nguyen to confirm the prescription. They were going to try new lenses with a slightly different curvature to them. A few days later, I’m told that I can’t use my frame or the polycarbonate material the lenses were made from — the material THEY recommended for me with the frame they helped me pic out.
I came in, and no one at the office new anything about me. They thought I was trying to change aesthetic looks of my glasses and were being unhelpful in the extreme. This is despite being told to come in on a Saturday by the office manager (who wasn’t even there!) because I was complaining about how much I had to take off work for just a pair of glasses.
Over the whole ordeal, I’ve spent $ 400 out of pocket, six weeks of waiting, 2 doctor visits, 3 office visits, 4 times taken off work, had to re-​explain the situation to four techs, the office manager, and the doctor. I still don’t have wearable glasses and am now waiting for a refund.

Finally, a really good optometry place. They are certainly well-​organized, dependable, and have all the latest gadgets and doodads. But that’s nothing without the right people, and the staff here do a fine job.
Everyone seems to know their facet of the business very well, keeping the entire process smooth and timely — if they say you have an 11:15 appointment, you will not be sitting around reading magazines at 11:30.
But the most important piece of the optometry puzzle is the optometrist, and I got a good one. Dr. Tran is sharp. You can tell she knows the field inside-​out, and can unfailingly comprehend not just your proper lens prescription, but your whole optometric situation: your general eye health, how your work/​play habits interact with your vision, and (especially important) how any other medical issues might effect your sight.
I got lucky finding a patient, extremely trustworthy optometrist so close to my home, so I’m not going to give this one up.

I came here off a recommendation from a friend and had an appointment with Dr. Mai Nyguan. She’s sweet and very knowledgeable.
They take VSP insurance but have a poor selection of frames and tack on a lot of extra charges here and there which can easily make your glasses hundreds of dollars more than they would be elsewhere.
Once my glasses finally arrived they were damaged so I had to wait another week for a new pair to arrive. When they arrived, I had a difficult time getting my glasses adjusted. The girl who was doing the adjusting (although she was very nice), didn’t seem to understand that they were *still* pinching the sides of my head. I asked her several times to adjust them but she seemed unable to do it. I now barely wear these glasses that I spent over $ 400 on because they pinch the sides of my head and give me a headache. What a waste.
My experience here has been that most of the employees here are not very friendly and act as if you’re a huge inconvenience to them.
They’re open every other Saturday which is helpful for busy people like myself since they close at 5pm the rest of the week.
I’ve since switched to Dr. Gary Gold’s office down the street near downtown Sunnyvale as they have a better frame selection (the newest designer frames), super friendly associates, and awesome optometrists.

This is probably the BEST optometry office I’ve ever been to! The office is pretty modern as they seem to be using the latest technology that is available. (Not that I know what the latest and greatest are in this profession, but it definitely is more updated than my previous optometry office.)
My exam with Dr. Mai Nguyen was very thorough, as she took the time to explain the differences and importance of base curve in regards to contacts, amongst other things. Dr. Nguyen, along with everyone else in the office are very friendly and helpful, so I would definitely recommend this place!

The stars do not lead you astray. Indeed, they are on a class of their own.
From the beginning to the end, their customer service and efficiency are unparalleled. When you talk with them, you know exactly what they need from you and when. When you walk inside, the office is bustling with workers, assistants and optometrists, and you are helped promptly. I had Dr. Gwo (the newest one to join the team), and she’s very thorough and has no problem explaining everything that’s going on, what you’ll need and why in your appointment. She isn’t rushed to go to the next person; she takes the time you need to answer your questions.
I had a hiccup in my contacts order, and Dr. Gwo (not anyone else) called me personally to explain the situation and to remedy what went wrong. I really appreciated it. And when I was finally able to pick up my contacts, the transaction was quick and friendly. What more do you want from an optometrist?
This is probably the best optometrist I’ve been to, ever. And I’ve had glasses since 3rd grade, so you do the math!
