Travelled from Pleasant Hill and couldn’t be more happy with our experience at Calaveras today. On a mission to find a large tree and we found just that. Adam helped us and stuck with us through our many questions and was very knowledgeable. We will be back to buy more when the time comes.

If you are shopping for a tree, especially a crape myrtle, make this your first stop. After shopping all over the East Bay, I finally ended up at Calaveras Nursery in Sunol.
My obsession to find two more crape myrtles took me to nurseries in Pleasant Hill, Concord, Clayton, Brentwood, Lafayette, and Livermore. I made the mistake of settling on a tree from one of these nurseries that ended up looking more like a 5 gallon tree in a 15 gallon bucket. Kinda felt like Charlie Brown when I took the tree home.
Intent on finding the perfect tree I kept searching and finally decided to make the hour drive to Sunol. Upon my arrival it was worth every minute of the drive.
I can honestly say that after looking high and low for a good crape myrtle the price and selection at Calaveras Nursery rivaled any of the other stops I made. I was a bit heartbroken to see such a large selection after already purchasing the Charlie Brown tree.
Shortly after my arrival I was quickly greeted by Adam who was extremely friendly and very helpful. He did an expert job tying the branches and squeezing the tree into my little vehicle with no damage at all.
The quality of the tree was superb especially after visiting the nursery right next to Calaveras, where I left feeling a bit hopeless in my search. The trunk of the crape myrtle was straighter and thicker than my previous two purchases from other nurseries.
I can’t say enough good things about this nursery and I’m kicking myself for not coming here first. My only regret is not having enough room to plant another tree.

Customer services was amazing! Selection impeccable. Quality of the plants stunning. Everything was organized and easy to find. The man working was very knowledgable, friendly, helpful. Best nursery I have found in the Bay Area. Will defiantly be back in spring.

Assholes. I just spoke to the guy 30 minutes ago told him I’m coming to buy a tree its I came here for 5 minutes earlier it’s not even supposed to be closed yet and you don’t answer the phone in the gates are locked jerk now I have to ride to Reno without a tree for my mom thanks a lot this place sucks I will never come here again or even attempt to even waste my time driving this piece of crap place what kind of customer service is it

I’ve been coming here to get a variety of plants and shrubs mainly because they just do well when I plant them. The best hydrangeas I ever purchased came from here, and the selection they have is enormous. ~25 $ for a 5 Gallon hydrangea is absolutely fantastic when you look at the quality of the plants. Everytime people guide me around when i am looking for a particular look and just present options. Don’t go to home depot or lowes for plants. Come here!

I needed some help (okay, I need lots of help!). I killed two Japanese maple trees in my backyard last year because of the drought. I grew up in the east bay with pine and oak trees on our property – who knew trees needed so much care and feeding (particularly water)?
I bought 2 green Japanese maple trees last year from Calaveras Nursery last year and they were very helpful. The trees are doing very well.
I need two more (another tree that did not get enough water is not recovering and I need to replace some really sad-​looking bushes in my front yard)). I just called them and again, the guy on the phone was very helpful. I will be swinging by to buy them as soon as someone lined up to remove the old trees and plant the new ones.

Nice nursery with a decent selection, very nice customer service from a knowledgable staff, not your foo foo nursery with humming bird feeders and wind chimes just a good old fashioned family owned business with good products at fair prices

Great selection of plants; great prices. helpful, friendly staff. Got two 15 gallon flowering cherry trees (over 12′ tall) and they helped me get them in the prius.

Disappointing. I was shopping wholesale nurseries for a client and stopped in to check the availability of certain plant materials and pricing. I guess they have plenty of sales because the person who walked me through the inventory wasn’t very helpful. He told me that they «rarely» do wholesale orders. (?) He told me I would have to have an order in the «thousands» to get wholesale pricing. Too bad. I did have that order but I’m going to another vendor who is responsive and eager to fill my order.
Got customer service? Nope.

I’ve always had decent experiences at Calaveras Nursery. One of the guys there (sorry, don’t know his name) is quite helpful, not sure about the rest. CN has a nice selection of plants/​trees and many plants I’ve purchased from them have done well in my yard. Small area of improvement: I sent an email to them with a small plant list and did not receive a response (don’t have email listed if you don’t check it… maybe a spam box issue, but not a huge deal.) Overall, not bad.

Wow, having just read the owner’s response to my posting, it’s very obvious that this place in no way cares about customers! You’d think in this economy, they’d want the business. Don’t waste your time going here for the incredibly rude service you will receive — shop elsewhere!

Came here to look for some bamboo and left with a whole lot more. Adam was very patient with us considering we are a Gemini couple and very indecisive lol. I would suggest you go check it out.

Plants delivered did not match the plants seen at the nursery.
When I visited the nursery, the plants and prices seemed good, so I ordered plants to landscape my entire yard.
Concerns with the plants delivered…
1) Some of the plants delivered had obviously been transplanted recently because the plants AND root ball were way smaller than the pot, i.e. root ball had lots of soil in the pots that the roots had not growth into at all.
2) Instead of the shaped Privet Cones ordered, I received completely unshaped privets. I ended up buying shaped Privets elsewhere.
3) I had selected the specific Maples but didn’t notice that some of the trunks were actually smaller trunks that had been twisted together at a much earlier age. Consequently I had to remove some to avoid future choking damage (my bad for not seeing it at the nursery).
Based upon what was delivered, the pricing wasn’t so great. The nusery staff was unresponsive once the sale/​delivery was made. Very dissappointing. If you have a landscaper, use Devil Mountain Nursery in San Ramon.

Just bought a purple lilac and a Santa Rosa plum. These folks take good care of their stock, and they know their plants. They’re just starting to go dormant, the Santa Rosa is about 5 years old and topped.
The nurseries thrive in this area of the Sunol Valley, and this one is worth checking out if you are looking for acquisitions to your garden. Good variety, well laid out, caring and knowledgeable people.
I’m partial to this area, it’s history to San Francisco Water. There is a water temple on SFWD Sunol Valley Headquarters (the office once was General Vallejo’s summer home). The valley once served as a giant filter bed, a supply for the Spring Valley Water Company. San Francisco still gets water from the head waters of Alameda Creek before Alameda gets it. The Town of Sunol’s supply is from Hetch Hetchy Dam, and local sources behind Calaveras Dam and John Turner Dam, treated at the Sunol Filter Plant.
No shortage for water, Sunol Valley nurseries never go dry.

This is a fantastic nursery. It’s located in the middle of nowhere, and pretty easy to get lost — so be sure to download directions from their website. This is the place you see while driving 680 through the sunol grade.
We made the hike here, as their prices are WAY better than our local nurseries. They’re not set up as a pretty little garden shop, they’re more like the Costco of plants and trees. They have a large, almost overwhelming variety to look at.
This is the place to go and get a mature japanese maple (about 5 varieties), or some border shrubs that you need to buy a bunch of. They supply many of our local nurseries — so here you’re really getting straight to the source.
The staff is friendly, patient and helpful. I say patient, because I was completely overwhelmed. I went in thinking I knew what I wanted… and then as the options unfolded I was crippled by all the options. I was dazzled by the flowering magnolias… (see my photo).
Borrow a truck, make the trip — but set aside enough time to meander the place and really see all of your options!

Came here for the first time by chance about a year ago. They happened to be having an annual clearance sale and just about everything was 30−50% off. We left that day with lots of plants and smiles on our faces.
Since that day we have returned many times. There regular prices are good and it also seems like they have pretty frequent sales. The employees are very helpful and the plant selection is great. They have lots of trees and shrubs in all different sizes. This really is not your typical nursery. Don’t expect to find gardening tools, or specialty fertilizers. They sell plants… and they have a TON of them.
I would recommend this place to anyone; especially if you are starting a large landscaping job. You can get large plants at great prices.
WARNING…this is not a hoity toity nursery. There are 3 – 4 guys who work there and they all seem to be cool, down to earth guys. They know about plants and can lift heavy pots. Don’t expect this nursery to be hosting a tea party anytime soon.

My wife and I have always seen this nursery from the freeway and now that we are re-​landscaping our yard we decided to stop and take a look. We were very impressed by the large selection of plants they carry. Everything was very well organized and all the plants were healthy. We were even more impressed by the knowledgable and friendly staff. Dylan answered all of our questions and helped us make our decisions. We plan on returning to buy some more plants in the near future.
It is nice to see such a well run family business.
