History

Established in 1998.

Co-founders, Paul and David began caring for unwanted pets, while finishing their degrees in biology. Soon, they were visiting schools and teaching children the life sciences while the animal ambassadors served as teaching aids. Soon word got out about the popularity and effectiveness of their programs.

The cofounders won a large contract with LAUSD’s Beyond The Bell Program and began providing life science education to Title I schools (schools with the lowest test scores in low income communities).

These school programs were cancelled in 2009 because of the recession. In response, the cofounders began actively seeking grants to continue serving these children and opened the Center to the public, to gain an ancillary stream of revenue.

Currently, the Center employs 12 staff biologists, 20 volunteers and 2 interns. They care for over 200 animals and continuously rescue animals while implementing their mission to this day.

Meet the Business Owner

Cofounder-Paul H.

Business Owner

Growing up in the Midwest, Paul was born with an affinity for animals. He began holding animal classes for his friends in 2nd grade. He attended zoology classes at the St. Louis Zoo and as a young man, worked at the Minnesota Zoo.

Paul received his B.S. in Biology, when he and David Riherd created the humble beginnings of the WLC. Paul lives in Venice Beach with his lovely wife Michele, beautiful daughter Laura, Bodhi the rambunctious black lab and Pookie, the chihuahua in charge.

While Paul’s natural habitat is the office most of the time, he enjoys migrating the grounds, maintaining the facility, carving signs and talking with guests. If you see him please say hello, his hair is the color of a silverback gorilla or bald eagle :)
