Gene Juarez Salon & Spa

This is a great place for hair services for single/​childless adults. I LOVE MY GJ STYLIST (Drew)!! That being said, it is a disservice to her and their other talented, kind, understanding, and friendly stylists and colorists that they have to depend on this front desk staff. On several occasions (about six in my last three years in WA) they have been horrendous to deal with. They are grossly misinformed and at times completely unaware of the services or products that the salon offers, it is a huge debacle to have my children see my stylist for haircuts (ex. I get phone calls asking to speak to my 6 and 3 yos), and the cherry on top is that they are just plain rude, condescending, and do not care an ounce for anyone’s situation that is more complex than, ‘I need to schedule a haircut.’ So, while Drew is absolutely fantastic and is amazingly understanding about and with my kids the awful service at the front desk makes it pretty unlikely that we all get to go see her. When you call be prepared to keep things simple for the front desk but, as far as my experience, be very happy with your hair!

Worst customer service. If I could give it 0 stars I would. I arrived to my pedicure appointment with my 4 yr old well-​behaved son and the receptionist asks if someone was going to come to watch him. I informed her that I am new to the area and don’t have anyone to watch him. She then asks if I would like to come back another day. I told her it would be the same issue so no. I then asked if they could make an exception this ONE time since I had driven 25 minutes to get there. She goes back to the nail area and asks some lady and the lady practically cuts the receptionist off and says, «NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT». Mind you it says on Unilocal that it’s not good for kids but on their website it doesn’t say NO KIDS ALLOWED.
I can’t believe I was actually willing to pay for an overpriced pedicure at such a place who treats people this way. I will not be going back! Luckily I found another place that had great reviews on Unilocal and they even had toys for my son.
I totally respect an establishment that doesn’t allow kids, but had I known ahead of time I wouldn’t have made the appointment. However treating me this way and yelling this way is completely unacceptable.

On my second visit to this salon on May 17, Jackson, again, did a wonderful job! Absolutely no complaints as far as the service I received from her! I still highly recommend Jackson as a stylist!
My complaint is with the girl that checked me out after my appointment.
First of all there was confusion as I had put my purse on the coat check hanger at the start of my appointment so when I asked for it back at the end, she condescendingly told me that it was against policy to check purses as it was a liability issue. Fine, that makes sense. I didn’t know but I won’t do it again. I thought maybe she was just irritated by my mistake so I brushed off the tone and the look she gave me.
However, the attitude only got worse as my check out continued. She was rude, rolled her eyes when I showed her that I had a referral coupon for $ 20 off, barked my total at me, did not ask if I wanted to set up another appointment, did not say anything about how to tip my stylist (which didn’t happen on my first visit either, but at least that girl was nice), she walked away from the desk as soon as I signed the receipt (meaning I could not ask her myself for another appointment or about the tip) and took the hanger with her so I was left standing there in the robe they give you to wear during your service with no option other than to leave it crumpled on the desk. I felt unwelcome and if Jackson were not absolutely fabulous, I would not return to this salon.
I do have her name, as it appeared on the receipt sent to my email, but I won’t post it here. She was AWFUL.

Worst customer service. I stopped in looking for Olaplex #3 which I know is available for retail sale. I didn’t see it on the shelves, so I thought I would ask the girl at the front desk. Her response to me was extremely rude. She was speaking to me as if I was stupid. Told me it was only available if I was licensed and to look it up. She made a call, then told me that it was confirmed Olaplex #3 has to be done there. She was speaking so rude to me. I told her it was the take home treatment, that can be sold to any hair types. She didn’t care. I was very polite to her. I don’t understand why the employees there are so horrible. A man also came out and stood next to her just to glare at me the entire time.
This so called salon was wrong. I would expect them to know about products. I felt very uncomfortable being treated like that. Also I don’t know why she couldn’t have sold me the product!!! I’m Also going to write to Olaplex so they can educate the staff at gene juarez.

Went here for the first time tonight. The staff was very accommodating as I was a bit last minute. Loann was a total doll. She was very thorough during my spa manicure and made good conversation. My hands look great! I will definitely return. The only thing I would question is that for the paraffin wax treatment my hands were dipped directly into the wax and I wonder how sanitary that is.

Back again, six months later, and it just gets better and better with these two. Book with confidence!

My stylists, Jackson, who specializes in curly hair, is the sweetest, nicest person ever! She was actually fixing a prior haircut that I had received somewhere else. I was worried that she was going to have to cut more off (which I wanted to keep as much length as possible) but after she asked me a few simple questions at the beginning, she started to work her magic and I was blown away by the end result. Needless to say I haven’t stopped taking pictures and I’ve already received lots of compliments from strangers! I can’t wait to see her again in a few months! =) Jackson is fantastic with all hair types, but she works wonders on curly hair and short hair especially!

Today I was whisked away to hair Heaven when Adrienne waved her magic wand (tint brush) and gave me the color of my dreams! Never in my life have I been so pleased with the outcome of my hair color. She is amazing and can make your hair dreams come true!

I walked in and got a hair cut with Lindsey. It had been months since my last haircut, so I desperately needed one. I showed Lindsey a couple pictures of the cut I wanted and described it to her, and she was spot on. She also gave me good styling advice and hair advice, as well as how to use the products she used and what they did. Overall, I’m very happy!
This salon is quite pricey though, so be prepared. The salon is very nice and offers tea/​coffee and has very personable stylists, so you do get what you pay for. I’d be far more willing to go back regularly if it was a bit cheaper, but I will still keep Gene Juarez in mind for my next haircut.

7 hrs later and I have orange hair. This is only my second experience ever with going to a salon and first here. I thought it would be way better at a reputable place, oh how I was mistaken! I don’t know anyone who truly wants orange hair! I wanted warm red with blonde ends/​sombre melt. Of course I showed several pictures of what I wanted and what I didn’t want! My high school students are going to love my orange hair from Gene Juarez! (Loaded with sarcasm) 1 star for not leaving with what I wanted but…
Talked with manager and she was very accommodating! They clearly value customer service and are more then willing to fix any mistakes or misunderstandings. Pleased with their willingness to keep me as a customer. Increase stars to 3.

First of all, I’d like to let it be known that I’ve gotten my eyebrows waxed multiple times– however, ever since I was introduced to eyebrow threading it has been my first preference.
That being said, out of all the times I’d gotten my eyebrows waxed the only problem has always been the aesthetician not delivering what I asked for (ie. Shaping them instead of only cleaning them up or just plain make them so thin I cried). This is why I regularly would have my eyebrows threaded rather than waxed; however, this time around at Gene Juarez, it was Thanksgiving Eve & my eyebrow threading lady had been fully booked due to my procrastination.
I reluctantly made an appt. at Gene Juarez while shopping at Tacoma Mall based on the positive reviews. The salon itself is tidy & the staff were accommodating & friendly. I had some coffee during the ten-​minute wait for Brandi, who was my aesthetician. During the procedure, she made me feel as comfortable as she could which I appreciate. When we were finished, I thought my eyebrows looked okay– especially for a wax job, so I proceeded to the front counter to pay for the service. The price is quite high for a mediocre job but all of the staff members truly made me feel comfortable so I did not mind.
The reason why I gave them two stars is because the day after, I noticed four acne-​looking bumps on my right eyelid & my skin is not acne-​prone; neither have I ever seen such kind of bumps. I know that this is from what ever kind of product Brandi put on my eyebrows during the service. I am disappointed because not only did Brandi deliver a job below average job, Gene Juarez in Tacoma also seems to use below quality products. So so disappointing!

Always a huge fan of gene Juarez! Ive gone here for the last 3 years and never ever disappointed. This week Simon was my stylist and he is definitely the best of the best!
I came in with very long thick curly hair down to the middle of my back, wanting something completely different like a tori jelly short curly look.
he hit the nail on the head with exactly what I wanted. Even with my own hair care products at home the look stayed the same and he made my hair lighter and easier to manage. My curls look and stayed the same as they naturally always have been but actually look good at this short length, not too boxy or poofy.

I moved and am not able to see my regular stylist any more. After procrastinating for far too long I decided to give Gene Juarez a try. Even though they are a chain they seemed on the upscale side.
I’ve never been to a place like this before and things like the robe were nice but I ended up feeling kind of like an idiot because no one actually told me what to do, so I am looking at them confused as to why they were handing me this and pointing me to a dressing room (did they think I was getting a massage, wait, this is for haircuts? I take off my shirt? huh?). I like the idea but maybe just ask if I’ve been here before.
It’s pricey, so maybe that’s why I had higher expectations. My stylist was nice. I have very long hair and it’s very fine. She asked what I wanted and I said I like low maintenance but my hair can be flat and I’d love a recommendation on what would look best on me rather than my current pretty basic cut. She’s the expert right? She just told me yes, my hair can be frizzy and flat because it’s fine, and then we got started with a basic cut. Well I guess my $ 80 haircut doesn’t include any type of actual consultation or expertise.
It had been so long since I’d gotten a cut I knew I needed a few inches taken off and I stopped dying my hair a few years ago and I wanted to cut away that last bit at the end that was suffering from at home dye jobs. I literally took a ruler to my hair before I went and that’s about three inches. She said she would layer the front and did an initial cut, which was more than 3 inches, but then told me it would be longer in the back so not to worry. Then I stood while she cut the back.
Goodbye nearly six inches. I was standing so I couldn’t see it happening, not that after the first cut there would have been anything I could do about it. And there was no layering. She blew out my hair and I was done. No styling or showing me a nice way to do my hair that I might like or recommendations for product that could help give some volume. Nothing.
When I checked out they asked if I wanted cash back. Huh? No. I’m not at an ATM. So I said no, but I wanted to leave a tip. The girl impatiently said the cash back was for the tip. Thanks for making me feel stupid again. Finally I was directed to a dressing room to take off the robe. Do I leave it in here? Do I hand it to someone? I have no idea, so I just leave it in there and hope I don’t look again like an idiot who is being rude or something.
I went in on an errands day, so I’m in jeans and a t-​shirt, my hair was just thrown back and I was make-​up free. Maybe I didn’t look like the type of client who would spend extra on product or something. I suppose I should have flashed a black amex before I sat down.

I got my hair and make-​up done here for a military ball. When I checked in, I was greeted by receptionist. She offered me a beverage while I waited for my stylist.
Sophie did such a great job. I showed her 2 pictures of hairstyles that I really liked, and she gave me great suggestions as to which one to choose. The style I decided to get had curls and braids. She said she loves incorporating braids into hairstyles so I’m glad she was my hairstylist. She really took her time and made my hairstyle even better that the picture.
After my hair appointment with Sophie, I met Chyeeda for my makeup application. Before she started, she asked me what color my dress was and what kind of assessories I was going to wear. She did such a great job creating a look that complemented my outfit. She was very gentle as she applied my makeup and I had a great time talking with her throughout my appointment. She asked me how I felt after the big reveal and I told her ‘I feel beautiful!’ I was very satisfied and happy with my final look.
Great customer service, very talented stylists, and helpful staff. Will definitely book another appointment with Sophie and Chyeeda for the next military ball!

Have you seen Sophie? This review is for her! She is a very talented, trained and artistic gal. She has vision. I went to see her for a haircut and style. I am giving her five stars for listening to my needs, recommending a fellow stylist for color, giving honest opinions… And taking her time. I love my 60s bob!

I’ll never go to a different salon in Tacoma. I had another great experience here a few days ago when Dylan cut my hair. You’re greeted immediately by genuinely nice hostesses with an offer of a beverage. Right from the start it feels like a luxury experience, despite being a mall salon.
My hair was very long and in desperate need of some love. I really appreciated that Dylan didn’t scold me for not getting a regular trim (as many hairdressers do). In fact, she was very warm, open and easy to talk to. She kept conversation comfortable and it never felt forced.
But most importantly, she did an excellent job cutting my fussy mermaid-​length hair. She was meticulous as she cut, comparing sides and making sure everything was even and perfect. Her blowout (included in the cost of the cut) lasted for days after and I got a ton of compliments on how bouncy and healthy it looked. Needless to say, I wasn’t getting those compliments with my long grown out layers before. Great experience, yet again. I’ll definitely go back to Dylan for all of my haircut needs.

Kyle did and awesome job on my hair! Love my cut. My daughter has extremely curly hair and Claire did an amazing job with it. Couldn’t be more pleased with our visit! If you have naturally curly hair and are worried about someone messing up your hair, stop and go see Kyle or Claire. Both stylists took their time and made sure they did it right.
Great service! The whole place was friendly and made sure we were happy.

I came here on Wednesday for a mani/​pedi. Not even three days later and the polish is chipped on three finger nails and one toe nail. They have the nerve to charge 100 dollars and do a crappy job. I will never go back. Very disappointing.

This is an update but only directly regarding the lobby and front desk. GJ, you need to hire people who care. Every time I stop by the salon, with money burning a hole in my pocket, and wanting to purchase product, I am always snubbed by the snobby front desk staff. I am an extremely perceptive person, and I have never once been greeted or approached by anyone who works there, and I am also given a vibe that because I am not a skinny gorgeous super model, I am not worthy of customer service. I have seen these girls giggle, laugh, and shoot me rude looks. The men aren’t any better.
GJ, please do yourself a favor and get some new staff who don’t act like they are too good to help a client who actually spends $$$$ on her hair. Just because this is a luxury salon, doesn’t mean it has to be snobby and rude.
