Holiday Inn Express & Suites TACOMA DOWNTOWN

This is by far the cleanest hotel I’ve stayed in Tacoma. Which I’ll admit there have only been a handful of others. I didn’t know it existed until a co-​worker recommended it. I stayed here 2+weeks while traveling for work. I’ll start with cleanliness-​on par. What made a difference to me was their housekeeping staff and this may seem silly. They restocked my coffee and condiments every day. Usually things like that get overlooked but not here. Next is the kitchen-​I often times had to be at work before the weekday breakfast. When I stopped by to ask if I could grab an oatmeal/​fruit to go they actually asked if they could whip me up something warm. No time for that but such a nice gesture. Front desk staff were very welcoming and when I noticed the phone wasn’t working they sent someone up immoderately to fix/​replace (I didn’t realize there was a second phone across the room-​oops). Location isn’t bad, walking distance to many restaurants on pacific Ave as well as UW-​T campus. All in all id definitely stay here again and recommend to others. Thanks HI-​C street. You nailed it.

I usually like the HIE but this one is a dump. Not only that but the non smoking room actually smelled like an old house where someone smoked for years and years. It was so bad that we decided to go next door to the old Red Lion. It was cheaper and more friendly.

This is a great option to stay in Tacoma if you have to stay there. Very clean, friendly staff and reasonably priced. Rooms are large with comfortable beds and linens. They have an indoor pool and hot tub. Breakfast is free and it’s really good. Selection and quality.

Room is nice but everything else was terrible. First off the hallway smelt like a 1970’s hippie convention. Yes I am aware that «It’s legal in Washington State» but I thought no smoking in the hotel would also cover that as well. The worst issue was the free breakfast. The breakfast attendant must have decided to save the hotel money because I never saw her change her gloves after removing the trash, adjusting the muffins and bread, cleaning the tables and picking items off of the floor. After watching this I felt sick just thinking of all the potential bacteria she was spreading to the guest at the hotel. I even mentioned it to the front desk but just got lip service. As a platinum member through ihg I thought I deserved a little better treatment than smelling like a hippie and being sick from the «free breakfast»

Location is great for what I have to do. Great area to walk with all the hills. I’m normally a Hilton guy, but this hotel is much nicer than some of the Hilton properties I have stayed. Views are also incredible and plenty of eating places within walking distance.

Stayed at this hotel the night before my wedding with my two best friends. I originally was trying to book at Hotel Murano since I heard it was very nice, but since they were booked (and quite expensive nonetheless) I booked with this hotel and I am pleasantly surprised and impressed.
I called a week and a half beforehand to schedule a last minute reservation at 10pm and the gentleman was very helpful in finding me a room within my budget and needs pretty quickly.
Check in was fast and the staff were very friendly and they have free parking in a connected garage.
The room was actually very nice! We did some prep photos (hair/​makeup etc) the morning of the big day and I’m glad the room didn’t look like I stayed in a truck stop. Also, the BEST PART is that they have complimentary pancakes until midnight in the community room (where they serve complimentary breakfast). I’d definitely recommend!

After driving through we decided to book this hotel. The area was completely gentrified since I grew up with this being a far less desirable area to be in!
The staff is friendly and the hotel is like new. They have an indoor pool and offer free breakfast! The room is large and the linens are soft.

This is a very nice hotel in the center of downtown (good location). You pull up to the front, check-​in, then self-​park in a parking garage attached to the hotel (nice parking and free). We walked out of the hotel front door, and went to the left and there was a gorgeous college campus right there. Then we crossed the street over towards the water to some restaurants. The neighborhood seemed very safe and we had no issues at all about that.
I had a wonderful room. It was clean, comfortable, and large. I loved the firm, pillow-​top beds. Great bathroom, lots of towels. No complaints at all.
The breakfast area (free breakfast) was amazing. It was a huge «great» room, very pleasant to be in. The breakfast was better than most complimentary breakfasts.
There’s a VERY nice laundry room on the 5^th floor (best in any hotel I have been in). Several washers and dryers, but it closes at 9pm and they lock you out at 9pm-​sharp, so be sure to finish your laundry before then. I didn’t realize they closed it, and I got locked out — but it was no big deal, I called down to the front desk and they let me in to finish my wash. No problem and they were very nice about it.
Wi-​fi not so great. Spotty at best — on all 4 of our devices, but I was not travelling on business so it was no big deal. I always hesitate to mention the wi-​fi because I am not tekky at all and I never know whether the issue is me or the wi-​fi.
I was laughing at myself when I checked into this hotel, because it does appear to be an upscale, downtown location (I’m usually a budget-​on-​the-​outskirts-​of-​town-​girl). I got this room with my Holiday Inn points + $ 40. The hotel seems like it would be expensive considering the location and upscale feel about it — so it was WELL worth using my points and $ 40! I say upscale, but certainly not in a «snooty» way. The girls at the front desk check-​in were very friendly and nice. It was upscale in a GOOD way!
There is a gorgeous college campus right next door — be sure to walk over there and visit it — beautiful old historic buildings and I LOVE how they incorporated an old train track into the very cool style of the walkways (trust me, go look at it!). The Chihuly exhibit is a 5-​minute walk (go see it — the Bridge of Glass is free), and there are restaurants and shops all in walking distance. A quick walk towards the Chihuly exhibit lands you at a beautiful marina; it was a nice area just to walk around and take in the sights and look at the water.
Beautiful lobby. Free garage parking. Super nice check in folks. $ 40 bucks. WONDERFUL (complimentary) breakfast in a sunny great room. What was not to love?

Had a 4 day stay at this nice hotel. Great décor, comfy beds, fridge and micro in room with disposable extras. Free breakfast. and not a cheap carb-​only breakfast either, Free parking, and Free WIFI (even though I had to sign in daily). The pool was a bit warm (I think they keep it that way) and I would have preferred it cooler or a spa. The inbetween temp on a hot day just felt dirty. lol Overall great stay.

Nice hotel. The rooms were clean and beds very comfortable. Wifi was a little slow but acceptable for free wifi. The staff was very friendly and courteous. My only complaint is that my room only had a single power outlet near the beds and one double outlet we could easily access. With 2 kids and 2 adult we couldn’t find outlet to charge out phones/tablets…almost embarrassed to complain about that (I can hear my dad laughing at me now), but for such a new hotel one would think they would design the rooms around today’s technology desires/​requirements.

Clean, nice staff. hard to find (kinda), and perched sideways on a hill so steep they should hold the downhill Olympic skiing trials on it. Price was great. Room was clean, ours had a ghetto view but we like ghetto views, the more graffiti the better. Personally, clean, affordable and friendly is pretty much my criteria for a good stay. Which this was. We walked down the block for some drinks and a $ 3 steak. You can walk the street and find some things. It is still a ride from the main street.

I can’t rave enough about Holiday Inn hotels — They are really my first pick when I travel to the US. My top 3 things: FREE breakfast, FREE parking, and FREE WiFi … clearly I appreciate FREE hahaha.
This hotel is really new, I read some reviews on Trip Advisor before I booked for us (group of 4) a room with two queen beds. We stayed 2 nights and had a room on the 4^th floor. This hotel looks quite new I believe it was only built a few years ago — everything is in good shape. Front desk and lobby area was decorated for the holidays and was very welcoming looking.
The keys to get into the rooms are the newer RFD type so you don’t have to insert and wait — this is great when your hands are full you can just lean your purse or pocket towards the door!
We had an annoying upstairs neighbour that must have had a kid or two because every morning around 7:30 am we could hear someone running and thumping back and forth which was so annoying. The heat/​fan are controlled by the thermostat on the wall and was fairly quick to change to what we set it to.
There is free parking upstairs in a parking garage, and you DO need a hotel key to get into the garage so it’s actually a lot safer than what some of the other reviews stated.
The WiFi is great at HI hotels, we had about 5 devices using the Wifi at one time and speed wasn’t really affected. The beds were nice and firm still (my preference) and you had a pick of soft or firm pillows per person per bed. I love when the bedsheets are white, I think my own belief that they get washed more often because they are white that comforts me when I see white sheets.
Breakfast is served from 6 am to 10 am. Huge flat screen TV and a couch in the room for everyone to enjoy with breakfast. Standard foods like Cereals, oatmeal in cups, muffins, toast, bagels. I usually have the turkey sausage, a hardboiled egg, and those delicious little cinnamon buns. They didn’t have the Oikos greek yogurt that I’ve grown to love about HI breakfast, but they had the Choba ones I think which are ok. Hot water, Tea, Coffee also available. They have a pancake machine too that kids seem to love (probably more for the process than the actual pancakes themselves).
My only nitpicky thing is that the bathtub is horrible designed, it’s super low so if you don’t pull the curtain all the way to the wall on both ends you get water splashing everywhere outside of the tub which makes the floor soaked! But huge bathroom counters lots of space to set up facial/​beauty products.
Whomever cleaned our room before we arrived missed two random pairs of black socks that we presumed the guest before us left behind because there were two pairs of mystery socks that we were having a good laugh about when we were packing up to check out.
Overall HI is still my pick for value for price and have yet to wrong me (let’s hope this doesn’t change)
We received great service at check in, and check out is a breeze you can just leave your keys in the room.

Pretty average place, but nice and quiet. The hotel smelled so new, like the carpet was just laid and the paint was still drying. It was nice, but just had that synthetic new construction smell. The front desk clerk was very chipper and friendly, despite my late night check in.
Parking is on the premises and you access the parking garage using your room key. The parking garage has the most atrocious use of space. It looks like all the spaces are for compact cars and the spacing of concrete columns is so bad, you can barely back out with out getting close to a column. Forget backing in. I don’t know who designed the parking garage, but it’s terrible. The hotel was nice otherwise, very decent for the price.

Wow — what a pleasant surprise. I would definitely stay here again! Great rates, great room, and breakfast included. Friendly staff. Walking distance to museums and restaurants. Freeway convenient. I highly recommend.

Usually a great stay but upon arrival I was told the entire hotel would have no power from 1 AM until 7 AM. My day usually starts at 4 AM when I am on the road and with a 7 am meeting this is a major inconvenience. There was not prior notification when the reservation was made! At the front desk they were so matter of fact and did not even try to calm my concerns about trying to get ton work in the am with no lights! Truly disappointing service this time around!

I stayed here for four nights and would definitely go back. The rooms were clean and modern, staff was very friendly and the location was very convenient both for accessing the highway and walking to restaurants in downtown Tacoma.
I usually stay at the Silver Cloud Inn, which is on the waterfront, but this was half the price and was similar in quality. The gated parking area is also a nice touch, although the spaces are absurdly small and very tough to get into with anything but a Yugo when it is busy.

I had both a very late arrival and a very early morning departure, and both times, the staff were quite friendly and accommodating to my needs.
It’s a fairly newly built hotel immediately adjacent to UW Tacoma on one side, and a bunch of warehouses on the opposite end. Given it was only opened in the past seven months, I could look past any minor imperfections, such as those door handles not opening up my first try.
Parking is free for guests.
For $ 108 per night stay and complementary breakfast, it seems like a great deal. And the rooms are very clean.
I used the fridge and microwave on the first floor to store my restaurant leftovers, ideal for a very early morning flight departure.

Completely impressed by this Holiday Inn Express.
My preference is to stay at the Hotel Murano, but that is for a romantic getaway with Mr. K. For a family trip to Tacoma, the Holiday Inn Express met every need in a surprisingly nice way.
Location is superb, with easy access off the freeway and in the heart of downtown. I could easily walk to shops, restaurants and museums.
The property screams, new, new, new and so everything from the secured parking garage (no charge), to the breakfast room to the pool and guest rooms were clean and in good condition. Check-​in and check-​out were a breeze and my son enjoyed the indoor swimming pool. The fitness room (4^th floor) is modest, but appreciated. Our only hiccup during the stay were cards that stopped working and this was quickly rectified by the front desk.
The breakfast room was the largest I’ve seen at one of these hotel with the typical HIE options. Although not a single piece of fruit was seen, so wish that would be added to the high carb options. Beds were comfortable, free wi-​fi and a large flat screen TV made my son happy and with no noise from adjoining rooms or the hallway we all had a good night’s sleep.
The AAA rate made this a really affordable getaway for the family.

I can’t believe that I forgot to write a review for this place.
I loved staying here. We actually had to stay here for almost two months while our home was being remodeled, due to water damage, so it wasn’t a planned stay.
The pricing seemed very reasonable.
This is a new hotel, so there were a few hick-​ups, but overall I really enjoyed our stay. The staff was FANTASTIC, they were really friendly, and kind, an very family friendly. The cleaning staff was great too.
They have a really good continental breakfast, my boys thought it was the best.
We enjoyed the pool a lot, it was kept at a nice temperature. They had a work out area, that was too hot to work out in, I was afraid of passing out, but the YMCA that is near by is really good at accepting visitors.
The location is great, and within walking distance to the light rail, a bullet type train that will take you around to a lot of downtown places.
I heard so many people ask the staff where good places to eat at were, and the staff would tell them to go to the Harmon, I personally wouldn’t recommend the Harmon, I’d recommend the Swiss over the Harmon any day. The Swiss, Rock Pizza, and the Old Spaghetti factory are right up the hill from the hotel, I’d steer in that direction. If you do go down towards Pacific, I’d highly suggest going to Indochine.
Be sure to take time to get on the light rail, even if it’s just to the end and back, as a bonus it’s FREE! If you know your way around, you can even walk across the glass bridge, and go to the glass museum quickly right off of Pacific, by the history museum. Overall, it’s a good location for downtown Tacoma, as long as you know where you’re going.
I didn’t rate it 5 stars, because the walls in the rooms are fairly thin, you could hear trucks really early in the morning; I’m assuming it was a garbage truck being that I could hear it at the same time, same day, every week; every siren on emergency vehicles blared, and woke us up; and you could hear your neighbors fairly well, especially if they had young kids, however the staff was great about asking the noisy ones to keep it down, but only after a certain time at night. Also, for being a new hotel, I was a little put off at how the tile grout was already discoloring, they didn’t seal it or they plan on cleaning it often, but it didn’t settle well with me, but the overall decoration, and feel to the room was wonderful.
Most of the rooms higher up, had pretty good views, so it made up for the noise factor, along with how pleasant our stay was.

Central location in downtown Tacoma, which made it a breeze to get there, just right off of the 509 freeway.
The rooms were in good shape and everything still had that new feeling to it.
One feature that I thought was handy was their little food/​drink section by the main lobby, this was great for when I didn’t have time to leave the hotel. They had a good selection of snacks and drinks to choose from.
Overall this Holiday Inn Express is pretty good, though I don’t think its the best hotel in Tacoma, but I did enjoy my visit here.
