Morgan Family YMCA

On a superficial level, the high school sophomores rave about the place. However, this is no longer a membership organization, but an adjunct to Pierce County government. And just like government, pleasant as long as you do not stress the workers. #1) Telephones go unanswered. #2) Even though it claims to me a membership organization; has any one member you know had any input on policy? Ans.: No. Hence the transgender abomination masquerading as enlightenment. #3) As it is now in a government recreational facility the relaxed atmosphere of a men’s group is gone; replaced with rules and regulations beyond comprehension. #4) It is one big giant fund raising organization, that never ever stops begging for money. #5) It has become an elitist organization, claiming moral superiority because it allegedly performs lofty community service. If you do not swim, then try to find a cost competitive private sector facility. You will get a great work out, and be spared the supercilious attitudes of the crusaders.

If you have a guest that you would like to pay for than this is not the Y for you! They act like your inconveniencing them or like your trying to sneak in! It’s the weirdest thing… Then they make you wait in the membership line to pay! I literally wait at least 10 minutes to just get in the gym! They really need to figure out a better system because frankly I’m about one step away from canceling my membership!

I love this Y! I am moving soon and will not be able to come to the Y here any more. The staff are all very nice and helpful. They welcome my Service Dog and my caregivers. They are understanding of my disabilities and helpful to me around these issues. They work WITH me and help me feel welcome every time I come. If they haven’t seen me for awhile they send me a note to be sure I am ok. They check your ID when you come in to help keep everyone safe and have your picture in their computer with your membership. This helps them recognize you when you sign in at the door. Every place I have been in the Y is very clean and enjoyable. They have a special locker room for women 15yrs and above so you can avoid younger children if you want. They also have a smaller workout room for ladies 15 and above only. It’s really nice especially if you’re self conscious like me!!. There is a nice Subway just as you come in the front door. You can place your order ahead of time if you have an idea of when you will be ready. They have a few tables in that area so you can sit and eat if you want. There is a cozy fireplace with comfortable chairs and they have assorted books you can take home and read.

We love our Y and use the facility almost daily. The only problem I have is when children are on machines and left unsupervised. On more than one occasion my workout (as well as others around me) has been completely interrupted or distracted by unattended children speeding up the treadmill mom or dad has plopped them onto (then left the cardio area all together) and tried to run or walk at that pace. This is not something that will keep me from coming to this Y, also I know this is not ultimately, the staffs responsibility to monitor every child in the facility.
I would like and encourage a stricter parent awareness and accountability. The facility IS a family friendly one, that is great! But it shouldn’t be over run with unsupervised children, on machines made for adults, with no parent in the vicinity.

The YMCA is the BEST hands down! I LOVE going to the Y! It seriously makes me so happy. Not only do you get to have a great workout on a viariety of cardio machines, weight machines and free weights, but they offer a great variety of classes FOR FREE! Although the classes are not like X-​Fit Status, the teachers are dedicated and really provide a great experience for new and old comers. My sister in law taught Zumba, and now teaches Mixxed-​Fit, TRX and Barre. I feel like the Y is up on whats «cool» in the workout world, and it is great they try to include it into their programs. This particular YMCA is my fav bc it is close to my home and job (I usually run to the Y and then do weights). I would like to shout out to all the YMCA’s in the Tacoma area however, they all seem to be exceptional (compared to what I have heard about other YMCA’s around the country). The people who work here are so positive and motivating~ I love EVERYTHING about this place! Keep on keepin’ on gym rats!

I was a member for a year, and while the staff were generally pleasant, the cardio space is too small (unless you love it when the guy on the next machine sweats… and it lands on you), and all machines are taken during peak hours. The bathrooms are really terrible — old and not maintained.
All of that is forgivable, but the membership pricing is ridiculous. Also, it smelled like a dirty diaper whenever I walked in. So, I quit the gym.

While the only thing I do at this Y is take the Zumba class on Tuesday and Thursday morning, I don’t go for more because there isn’t much that interests me. It’s a very old Y that needs a lot of TLC. While they do keep the machines in good working order, it’s small and they are jammed into a room which probably isn’t large enough and they don’t have enough machines on the weekends. That said, Angel is probably the best instructor ever and his Zumba class makes it worth while. This Y seems to stress things like step and other high intensity workout classes, not much for us that just want exercise that is fun without stressing our aging joints.

We are new to Tacoma, and the Morgan Y has introduced us to a really excellent, healthy community of people.
My son, David, loves their swimming pool, racquetball, climbing wall, and that he can play in the big gymnastics gym and just hanging out with his friends while I get to hang out with adults. He’s become an excellent swimmer thanks to the swim classes at Morgan. He has learned to play basketball, and he will start playing soccer this fall as well.
While David’s been involved in all these activities, I’ve been working out too, and I love the Zumba and yoga classes. Boot camp is great, but a little hard on my back. If you want a good challenge, go for it. The women in the class are really cool.
The people at this ymca are really friendly, helpful, and encouraging. Angel, Meme, Angela, Stephanie… I feel like the list could take all day honestly. Everytime I walk in I see someone friendly and nice who seems really happy to be working there. I have ended up working out a lot more than I would have at a traditional gym because they have such a wide variety of class offerings with such a family friendly schedule.
The only downside is that the child care is not included in the membership. Paying 3.50 an hour can be difficult to navigate with two children, but I make it work. Luckily, the childcare is good quality and the women who run it seem to really like kids. They seem to always be finding new ways to make the nursery and extended nursery better.
All in all, if you are a stay at home parent and want a healthy place for your family, I highly recommend the YMCA. It has become our second home, and there are a lot of other people there who clearly feel the same way. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.

The pool is half chlorine half saline dry-​up-​your-​skin pool. And you better take a shower and scrub those crevices before you enter the pool!!! Nobody wants your dead cells, fungus, germs, and butt crud all throughout the pool. We know who you are we can see your unwashed body walking in… besides half the people who don’t shower before pool time, I’d say its awesome. The staff is family freindly. The classes are so fun, and at the YMCA you just have a wonderful group of friendly people. I do my own thing. Wear bath sandals in the locker room, clean off your yoga mats and machines you use, wash your hands like crazy or else you’ll get sick or spread sickness.

I got a 3-​day pass while visiting family in Tacoma. The membership staff was unbelievably helpful to get me a low price although I would have paid 2 or 3 times that, because I have never seen a more perfect gym. This place is kind of ridiculous, actually, and I’m wondering if I dreamed it up.

The Y has everything — classes, weights, cardio machines, a pool, steam rooms, locker rooms, a book exchange, wi-​fi, child care, Subway, friendly staff, and it’s all very, VERY clean. You could stay there all day, if you wanted.

My in-​laws pay ~$ 65 for a membership for 2 seniors. I thought $ 65 each was a bargain, but no, it was for both.
Did I mention the friendly staff? I went to Sunday morning spin with Phil, and he walked around the room to greet and encourage people. Somewhere in the middle of the class, another Y staff member came around to give us fresh towels since in case we’d already sweated through ours (I sure did. Phil puts on a great class). I liked that the Sunday morning class started and ended with a gospel song. It seemed really fitting. He mentioned that the first Monday of the month, there would be a karaōke spin class. I briefly considered changing my plane ticket home so I could attend.
Might be worth moving to Tacoma just for a YMCA membership.

I have looked around at the other gums in Tacoma and decided to stay at Morgan Family YMCA. I thought looking into a cheaper gym would be better, but I found they can be pushy, almost like used car salesmen.
The equipment here is up to date and the employees are friendly. Most of the cardio equipment have individual tvs so you can watch what you want. There is two separate weight areas to include free weights. There is an indoor pool with lap lanes.
After seeing what else is out there compared to here, I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

This has more of a standard gym layout than other Ys I’ve been to — it feels like your standard urban gym, honestly.
Yoga room, spinning room, group exercise room, rock climbing wall, basketball courts, racket ball courts, indoor track, lap pool, aerobics pool, hot tub, sauna, weight machine room, free weights room, cardio equipment room, gymnastics area (with second indoor track above it.)
If you have kids, they offer childwatch services for $ 3/​hour until 2pm (you must stay on the premises, it’s not a daycare) or you can use the «wellness area» up front where you watch your own kid from the small number of cardio machines available (better than nothing.) The memberships for your kids pay for a lot — swim lessons, gymnastics, and group classes. Honestly, making it to the Y three days a week makes the cost about the same as any indoor drop-​in play area in the Puget Sound.
The pool always smells a little over-​chlorinated and swimmers all get out with very red eyes. Bring goggles if you are sensitive, cap that bleached-​blonde hair, and get a swimsuit you don’t mind fading a little over time if you’re a regular swimmer.
If you have Regence Blue Shield health insurance, they offer a discount called Silver Sneakers. If you, like me, don’t but have another health insurance, there’s a good chance your health insurance will reimburse you a little for the membership.
I live closer to the downtown Y but I come here because they have stuff for my kid — I think that shows in the crowd here, as well.

The facility is still the same: standard club layout, busy… but almost 9 months later I owe it to the rest of the staff to bump up my rating of this YMCA.
Natasha, one of the aquatics directors, is fantastic! She’s helped my 2 youngest children thrive in their advanced strokes and endurance. We’ve been pleased with swimming classes in general.
Angel, Katrina, Tye and Yvette are all excellent zumba teachers… I love them! Angel was a professional dancer with Alvin Ailey. His 9AM classes on Tuesday and Thursday are huge for a reason. His assistant teacher, Mimi, is fantastic.
Per my prior review: Chelsea the trainer is still a poor staff person, if you see my review below, you’ll understand my initial beef… but I’ve kept my eye on her all this time, and her customer service is poor. Avoid her.

Our family always feels comfortable at this Y. Everyone we interacted with is both professional and kind. They make us kind of feel like family…
I didn’t think I’d EVER say this but: I enjoy working out (!). Crazy, hugh? This Norwegian tub of butter likes to sweat. And I have the Morgan Branch to thank.

Very nice place to work out, swim or take a steam. The culture at this location is family oriented. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and equipment is well cared for.
I think the biggest difference between clubs for me is cleanliness and culture, not a bunch of muscle heads or weirdos here and one of the cleanest facilities I have been at.
Their memberships are not the cheapest, but if you have a family membership; the programs are great deal. A nice facility that is well kept does not come cheap.

It has everything we need and at a great family membership price. New and well-​maintained cardio and weight rooms, great group exercise classes, childcare for a small fee (and sometimes free!), included classes for the kids and all sorts of events and activities to get involved in.
I have my girls enrolled in gymnastics and swim classes that are all included with membership. I also have them both playing soccer through the Y for an additional fee that beats anything else in the area.
The facility is really nice and clean and the staff is very friendly, pro-​active and seem truly happy to be there. I have never had a bad interaction with anyone.
A membership is a great investment and highly recommended.

Staff is awesome, very helpful. Equipment is always clean. Their nursery is wonderful, and the staff is amazing.

A great place to go and work off those extra pounds, extra stress, or to just stay in shape! I generally go in the morning, and while the parking lot always seems to be full I have never had to wait to use a machine, or bump into anyone on the track. I am certainly a fan of this place!

Rock wall. New weights, pool, hot tub, steam room. It’s got child care, free programming for kids. The best place to be from infant to elder. Great for just you or the family. The YMCA IS AMAZING!!!
