Tahoe Adventure Company is your one stop shop for adventure! We offer guided adventures such as kayaking, stand-​up paddleboarding, mountain biking, hiking, multi-​sport, climbing, team building, and custom excursions. Kayak and SUP rentals are available hourly or longer at our beach concession at the Tahoe Vista Recreation Area. Check our website for multi-​day kayak and historical kayak trips.

History

Established in 2004.

In the summer of 2004, Kevin Hickey guided his first guests over the clear waters and boulder fields of Sand Harbor State Park, describing the rich natural and human history of the area and promoting the idea that the best adventures are indeed human-​powered. Over the years Tahoe Adventure Company has grown from a handful of kayaks to an entire fleet of equipment geared towards adventure, from snowshoes to mountain bikes to corporate team-​building tools. Tahoe Adventure Company prides itself on ‘Inspiring High Sierra Adventures’ by providing guests with outdoor experiences that can only be accessed by their own physical and mental motivation.

Kevin H.

Business Owner

Kevin is the Founder and Director of Tahoe Adventure Company. His goals from the start have been to offer the highest quality adventure trips and tours with a focus on the natural and human history of the Tahoe/​Truckee area.

Kevin has 17 years of Guiding and Outdoor Education experience throughout the U.S. and Abroad. He spent many years teaching wilderness education, backpacking, rock climbing and sea kayaking. He has also worked as a naturalist, ropes course facilitator, and developer of custom teambuilding programs. Additionally, he has worked as a ski patroller and on the logistics and medical teams for various adventure races around the globe.

Kevin has a passion for sharing the outdoors with guests and especially enjoys working with youth and school groups. He holds EMT, CPR, Avalanche Level II, and Leave No Trace Trainer certifications.

4 of us did the two hour discovery Paddleboard tour. It was an amazing experience and our guide Garrett was awesome. Very knowledgeable about the lake, and kept an eye on everyone the entire time. We all had a blast. Well worth the money.

So awesome! We rented two double kayaks. Got there about 10:30 am, and they only had a few available for an all day rental because of a big party coming in later. All the people working there were really friendly and helpful. Gave us advice for where to go. The kayaks $ 80 each for the whole day. We lasted about 5 hours before returning them. Then the next day, we realized we had lost a Fitbit. We went back to the booth, and they had it in their lost and found. Win! We’d definitely rent from them again.

Ours was a guided snowshoeing tour on a trail in a park (Castle Peak). It was great. Kelly was our guide and she really knew a lot about the area and the environment. Enjoyed her explaining about the different levels of snow. We had a lot of snow which was a treat since we are from FL. Loved having her dog with us. Lunch was adequate. Nice break to have hot chocolate and hot cider midway. It was cold and snowing the entire time.

We went snowshoeing on the Spooner Lake guided tour. We had a great guide that provided great history of the area and great information about the local landscape. The easy walk took a couple of hours and afterwards our guide made lunch for us all. We have also taken the Thunderbird Lodge Kayak trip with TAC and it was outstanding as well. We highly recommend the Tahoe Adventure Company. The guides and the tours have consistently given more than we expected.

I took my father snowshoeing through Tahoe Adventure Company Dec 27 as a Christmas Present. We were both beginners but our instructor Kelly walked us through the process and took us on a gorgeous trip. She was very friendly, knowledgeable and fun. We had a fabulous time and are heading back out in a couple weeks! Thank you Kelly & Tahoe Adventure Company!!!

The kayak tour to Thunderbird Lodge was great. The kayaks were comfy and easy, Shawn was very knowledgeable and fun. Lunch was simple but ok. September is a perfect time to be on the lake.

I planned this outing as a surprise for my husbands birthday trip to Lake Tahoe. It was a blast and a great first time kayaking experience for my husband. I did some research on the excursion prior to the trip and had the impression we would go out, paddle to some destination, get out of the kayak for a bit, then paddle back. The trip, for our group, was basically getting in the kayaks and paddling a loop around the area. We did stop (in the water) to listen to the tour guide talk about Lake Tahoe. The views were amazing, the weather was perfect and I would love to do it again on our own.

This was our first vacation to Lake Tahoe and I found these guys online and made two reservations — one for paddleboard/​sailing and the blue moon kayak tour. Kelly, our paddleboard guide was friendly and patient with us. She led us to the sailing vendor, but there was a miscommunication with them and we were unable to take the trip that day. Kelly and the team at TAC were very professional and gave us a prompt refund for that part of the adventure. We had a blast with the guides during the blue moon kayak tour. Ben is an English teacher, so we were treated to the Lake’s history and many myths and folklore. Katie, the admin followed up with us several times to ensure we were delighted with our adventures. I highly recommend these folks and plan to use them the next time were in Tahoe.

Took a stand up paddle board tour. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Tons of interesting information about Lake Tahoe history. Provided lunch was as good as I’ve had on any guided trip. We had a great time and would go again. I’d recommend this for anyone looking for a guided leisurely afternoon paddle.

We had a several hours to stop at Lake Tahoe and found these guys through Unilocal.
What a blast! My 18-​year old and I participated in the Discovery tour and it was the perfect activity for first-​timers and for the limited time we had.
After a brief introduction and safety talk, we took off in our kayaks. Our guide was patient and encouraging, providing technique tips as we went along.
The scenery was spectacular, beyond description. What was really interesting was the water. It was crystal clear! I’ve traveled to beaches all around the world and have never seen water this clear. We could see down to the bottom of the lake and because of its clarity, we felt like we could just reach Ina no touch it. We learned from our guide that the depth was 30 feet.
We had so much fun, we plan to return to the area for a week long vacation.

Our company (18 people) did the Gar Woods Lakeside Lunch and Kayak Tour trip in June, with a mixed group of experienced kayakers and newbies. Not to mention a couple of people who at the start of the day had absolutely no desire to participate. But we had a BLAST. I cannot emphasize enough how awesome our guides, Robin and Kim, were. They kept the pace at something we could handle, were amazing when we had a bit of a medical emergency on the water, and were full of fascinating information about the the lake itself, as well as the surrounding region. Plus Gar Woods served an excellent lunch. All 18 of us would use Tahoe Adventure Company again in a heartbeat, and have discussed paddle boarding as the next adventure we want to try together. Thanks again, ladies, for such an awesome day!

Bunch of stoned buffoons bumbling through dolling out kayaks and stand ups. Granted you don’t need much brain power to perform such tasks but wowwwwww this was painful.
Life vests for the kids? — oh yeah hang on let me look for them.
Paddles? — oh sorry right you need kayak paddles.
What about that rain and lightning coming in? — no worries bro you’ll be fine.
Dry bag like we discussed on the phone? — uhhhh hang on yeah that’s another $ 5.

Out trip started with kayaking and though all of my friends were doing it for the first time, everyone could do it easily and our guide, Sean was really cool. Sean allowed us to have fun the way we wanted to and never rushed us. We enjoyed our sail trip, though we got a little drink by the end of the trip ;)
I would highly recommend this to my friends. Just one suggestion, I believe you should offer group packages for more than 5 in a group. Thank you!

Went here yesterday to rent 2 kayaks. Three guys were working under the tent but seemed more interested in catching up with their buddies than helping us. We signed our paperwork and paid and lingered around waiting for some instruction. I asked if we needed life jackets and 2 guys kept talking to each other and ignored me. We walked back to the tent to ask the other guy and he handed us life jackets. It was just very odd how we were treated. We did enjoy the kayaking out on the beautiful lake. However these guys need to stick to eating Funyuns on the couch or something. When we returned the life jackets the guy remained seated and asked us to hang them up on the clothesline behind him. Get your customer service skills together guys! Lazy!!!

These guys are great. I booked a kayaking tour with them for my girlfriends birthday. It was definitely better than just renting the kayaks because of the tour. They tell you a bit of history about the area you are kayaking around as you row to a beach where they set up a pleasant lunch. We had turkey sandwiches and snacks on a nice table on one of the beaches that is less occupied than the rest. After lunch you paddle back and the tour comes to an end.
Dan and Sean, our tour guides were really nice. They keep the group moving at a great pace, they go above and beyond to make sure everybody is happy. They communicate with everybody and take your photos if you ask nicely.

Star tour kayak adventure!
Got this as part of my boyfriend’s birthday gift. We kayaked on Lake Tahoe at sunset. Tahoe Adventure Co. provided some suits to try to stay dry in (be warned that you will still likely get wet though so it’s nice to bring a change of clothes so you’re not in wet clothes at night since it’s freezing). After we got suited up, they gave us a quick demo on how to kayak. We’ve done it before so no biggie. If you’ve never done it before, it’s fairly easy. And no, nobody fell out.
The kayak portion of the tour was fine. We learned a little about the history of Lake Tahoe. And it was nice to get out on the water. You can see the Sierras aglow.
Back on the shore they provided us with some snacks (granola bars, tea, hot chocolate, etc.)
But my favorite part was the star tour. What can I say? I love it when people talk nerdy to me! We got a quick orientation by a very knowledgeable guide. He was able to answer all my questions. More impressively, he was able to answer all my boyfriend’s questions. Yes, he’s THAT guy on the tour that tends to ask a staff member a question that they don’t know: P But I digress.
Telescopes were set up for us. We saw tons of shooting stars, planets, and the milky way galaxy. We talked stars, comets, meteors, light years, human history, etc. My kind of night :)

Found them on Unilocal,called around. Not only did they have the best pricing, all staff were well informed and so nice.
It’s so nice for someone like me who likes to be well informed to get instruction. When she showed us how to paddleboard, she instructed us knowing it was our first time and told us everything we needed to know. Clearly she’s a pro and knew enough to give us all the beginner information. I appreciated that.
They also sell the used paddleboards at a discount.
Highly recommend doing business with them. Kind people and that Tahoe feel.
