Specialties
Native Nurseries is a full service retail nursery, specializing in native plants & non-natives that are hardy for our area, non-invasive & low maintenance. We believe you should spend your weekends enjoying yourself — not spraying your landscape with poisons. We are also a wildbird shop (w/the freshest seed in town & a great choice of squirrel-proof feeders) and a nature gift shop.
Our mission is to educate, inspire & assist people in our community to preserve, manage & develop their lands, yards & gardens to benefit native wildlife & to promote public awareness of the interrelationships of all living things. We work towards this goal by promoting the use of native plants & offering workshops. We also offer a landscape consultation, design & installation service headed by a landscape designer who holds a BS degree in Wildlife Ecology.
Most of all, we provide a well-trained staff of enthusiastic naturalists & horticulturists at our store everyday to assist people toward this goal.
History
Established in 1980.
Donna Legare and Jody Walthall opened Native Nurseries in 1980 (some in the industry called it Naïve Nurseries). In the beginning, there was only Donna and Jody and their dog, Sam, until they hired a neighborhood teenager to help out.
But then life happens and things change. Donna and Jody had two babies; Vanessa and Joseph have both graduated from college and are working at the nursery now. Sam’s gone, but Pansy is the perfect shop dog and Vanessa has brought in a new puppy, Shadow. .. and there are now fifteen employees.
A lot of you already know all this, because there’s one thing that has not changed in all these years. From the beginning, Native Nurseries has been very good at attracting loyal customers and hanging on to them. Whether you’ve been with us since 1980 or two months ago, our customers and friends tend to stay loyal. We hope you all know how much we appreciate your support.
