Checkmate Barber & Styling Salon

I found Checkmate when I moved to Tampa part time 7 years ago and have been getting my hair cut there ever since. Even when I’m overdue for a trim I wait until I’m back in town to go to Checkmate. Angelo runs a 2^nd generation family business that makes you feel at home. Traditional neighborhood atmosphere that is family friendly like the barber shop where I grew up. His team has been with him for years and he staffs well to the anticipated volume. The guys are a hoot including Tony, who still speaks with his hands and the accent of his native Italy. I usually go on Saturdays and rarely have to wait more than 15 – 20 minutes and often less. They listen to what you want, cut it your way, trim with warm shaving cream and a real razor, and at a reasonable price. Did I mention you can get a hot shave and find out what’s going on in South Tampa? It’s what a real barber shop is meant to be and I look forward to getting a haircut.

Angelo was referred to me by a friend, and I am grateful that he did. He has been cutting hair for 35 years, uses warm shaving cream and a straight razor old school style, and gave me the best cut I’ve had since I’ve moved back to Tampa 2 years ago and 20 something bad cuts later. He greeted everyone that came in by their first name and the rest of the barbers did as well. I haven’t seen that in awhile… like since I was ten a long time ago.
For me it’s nostalgic, with the advent of retail storefront hair salons that hire inexperienced talent, and where the hair cuts are mediocre to downright bad, this was a refreshing change and a gem of a find.
I remember in my youth going to the barber with my dad, and this took me back. Watching sports, getting a solid cut and shave, and enjoying the banter between everyone in the place, was enjoyable… and the haircut fantastic. Top notch. Im bringing my kids their next week and will definitely be back. Take cash, they have a vintage antique cash register but no credit card machine… another nice touch.
