Let Them Eat Cake

Chef Michael and his team are terrific. Both in customer service and execution of their cakes and other bakery treats. My wife and I went to him on a friends recommendation for our cake testing. As others have mentioned, the experience was thorough and complete.
What makes him stand out is his belief that the couple to be should not be without a fresh cake on their first wedding anniversary. Never mind that tradition of freezing the top tier of your wedding cake — not on his watch!
As verbally agreed upon a year ago, I gave him an e-​mail with the requested flavor and his team whipped up a small cake that we took home this afternoon. Everything about the cake from presentation to flavor texture and taste is as advertised and outstanding.
Great things for great people, indeed!

I was looking for something unique for my child’s birthday party and saw that Let Them Eat Cake did birthday parties for kids. I called for information and Chef Michael said he was with a customer and would call me right back. I didn’t hear from him for several hours so I called back and he seemed very scattered, not remembering we spoke briefly earlier that same day. I received the information I was seeking and thought the party idea sounded great, although it was much pricier than I had initially intended on budgeting. He sort of cut me off after several minutes as he had another caller and abruptly ended the call. Chef Ken called me later that day and I discussed a few more details with him, expressing that I would like to see the bakery before finalizing the party booking. He indicated that they are very busy with parties so I should hurry in if I want to be sure to book the party date and time I want.
I hurried in the following afternoon (today) after picking my child up from school and we went into the bakery. The appearance of the bakery did not meet my expectations (or my child’s). There were two people working (a man and a woman) and only one customer ahead of us, but we were never acknowledged, despite the fact that they obviously knew we were there and that I was waiting with four small children and a friend. They blatantly ignored us for a few minutes until we finally just walked out, deciding that we will not be booking the party there.
If anyone had so much as acknowledged our presence and said they would help us as soon as they could, I would have been more patient and understanding. But for $ 500+ for a child’s birthday party, I expect not to be ignored for several minutes when I’ve driven over half an hour to get there and I would also expect that the place be a bit more aesthetically pleasing as a place to host a party.
Bottom line– their customer service was terrible and they seem to have more business than they can handle, so they won’t be missing mine! It was a unanimous decision too as none of us were impressed.

I wish I can give this place a no Star rating. Planning a friend’s event for the weekend, stop by to get quoted for a cake a some candies. When I walked in I did not get greet it at all. Showed the so called owner my idea he literally said that «he didn’t have time for me». He made me feel like I didn’t know what I was saying commenting about the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday and how busy he was. I don’t see how this place can get that busy with owners like him scaring away new customers. He referred me to Cakes Plus on Dale Mabry and was the best decision I made they won a customer and Let Them Eat Cake lost one. I will never recommend this place when the owner has no customer service manners.

Well we found this place through a recommendation of a friend of ours.
The tasting went well and we felt up until delivery at our wedding that everything had gone well. We had dropped off a very cute and funny cake topper that really illustrated our marriage in a funny way. A bride with a fishing rod that hooked the groom trying to run away.
As the groom I had arrived a bit early and checked out the reception room and right away noticed there was no cake topper. I thought well maybe someone will bring it out later. Well that didn’t happen.
Now it bothered me a bit but it really bothered my bride. And to top it off when we called to see what there excuse was nobody wants to take the blame for it.
I’ll end with a good note. The only reason they didn’t get one star was because the cake tasted good.

The experience at Let Them Eat Cake is not to be missed for brides in Tampa. From the cake tasting to finalizing details Chef Michael was funny, creative, he listened, and delivered our perfect wedding cake. We had two different flavors, Boston cream and jour de nuit (chocolate and vanilla) and our guests raved about our cake. At our first meeting we had a wonderful tasting. We felt Chef was a little distracted but the bakery is always busy (with repeat customers!) which was a great sign. When we discussed the design I presented ideas we had agreed upon prior and Chef was happy to accommodate and made suggestions as well! Our cake came out PERFECT, thank you Let Them Eat Cake!

I’m so shocked by the mediocre reviews! This place is amazing! I just got my third cake from here. One was for my son’s bday: a dinosaur that was awesome. Then my wedding cake and I love it so much I bought my friend’s wedding cake for them! They are a little scattered, but in a fun, quirky way, and they always deliver great food on time! I also used Chef Jason to cater my wedding and he was AMAZING. The food was so perfect and he takes such pride in his work. These people are artists and much as they are businessmen, so don’t expect them to be perfect, but I promise you they care about the product they are delivering and they want to make you happy. Everything I’ve gotten from there has been, to be honest, 100% perfect. Love them!

Please don’t waste your money here. We wasted $ 260 for a cake for a 50^th Bday for 40 people. No one ate the cake and we ended up throwing away the majority of a chocolate with chocolate filling. It tastes like chemicals or that it was made with Crisco. What a shame. It would take a lot for me to throw out a chocolate cake but I didn’t hesitate.

I have had the pleasure of working with Chef Michael for several corporate events. His cakes always win awards for our industry and his professional staff and whimsical approach is a delight.
Of course selecting him for our wedding cake was a no brainer.
The cake was beautiful — naturally! Chef Michael only lets the very best walk out of his bakery and our cake was no exception. From the three different flavors (one for each tier) to the handmade cake topper that matched our theme — everything was exquisite. There are a lot of things you worry about while planning a wedding — a cake shouldn’t be one of them. Do yourself a favor, go have a tasting with Chef Michael, fall in love with his charm and his wonderful spirit, and know — your cake is gonna be beautiful and delicious. Easy! One less thing to worry about!

VEGANS BEWARE!!! I booked a tasting here based on people stating that they have ‘vegan’ offerings and the staff assuring me they could provide vegan cake options. First off, when I arrived the CHEF asked me what exactly vegan meant… which raised a HUGE red flag for me. Thankfully I have been vegan long enough to trust my instincts and taste buds. Both chefs told me they ‘thought’ the icing was vegan, but it came boxed so they couldn’t tell me what the ingredients were. I tasted egg immediately and questioned it a second time and was assured that there was no egg in the icing. I stopped eating that particular icing and felt very pressured by both the staff and chefs to sign an order immediately for my baby shower. I just kept being told how they ‘couldn’t do this’ and they ‘couldn’t do that.’ And also how there was no such thing as vegan cream cheese… by the head chef. I would absolutely not recommend this bakery at all. I was very disappointed and made to feel very pressured to pay 2 months in advance for a cake I was certain they would not and could not provide to my satisfaction. I actually got ill by the time I got home, sweating, stomach issues (I luckily didn’t throw up, I only had the other issue for about 2 hours) and having to drink tons of water and lay down due to the severity of the cramps. They called me a few days ago to find out ‘when I would be paying my invoice.’ And when I told the girl I actually got ill because their frosting had egg in it and they told me it was vegan, she just said ‘okay thanks, and hung up.’ RUDE as well!

I visited Let Them Eat Cake to look at having him do our wedding cake. We had an appointment and expected that we would be seen around our appointment time. While we were waiting he gave me his laptop and told me to click on all the pictures that I liked. During that time he was rushing around finishing up several cakes that were being picked up at that time. He came over and told me one time, probably as he saw the frustration after waiting 30 minutes on my face, that when it came my time to have my day, I would be given the priority. I just smiled and said I understood. He finally brought out a preprepared tasting plate 45 minutes after our appointment time, right as his next appointment was checking in. He then emailed me all the pictures I had clicked to like, and cleared the selections. I was so confused why I needed all the pictures of his cakes when I was sure I could find cakes that I liked at a lot of other sites. He half paid attention to us as he simply said «Vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting. Vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting.» He repeated himself several times on each flavor before moving onto the next flavor. While the cake was good, I couldn’t get past the lateness, lack of organization, and the fact that the cakes that he put out while I was there were just sub-​par. We definitely didn’t think about using him for our wedding cake, as I was afraid he would be late or the cake would look like some of the ones I saw. The couple that came in after us also had to wait 30 – 45 minutes.
I wanted to review it here because I do feel that the experience that I had with him was worth noting, as brides going in for a consultation should be prepared to wait. I think he might be resting on his laurels and expecting to sustain business because people hear that he makes good cakes.

First let me tell you that I normally don’t write negative reviews. My wedding vendor used this company for wedding cake as part of a package few years ago and I still fume every time I think about this company! And that is why I am writing this review.
At first, I didn’t think there would be any problems. The tasting went well and I chose a very nice cake (a design that they have done before so I know it will turn out nice). Since it was part of a package deal, I knew I would have to pay a little extra for special details and an extra tier that I requested. I have spoken to the owner Michael a few times regarding this matter and we have come to an agreement on a specific amount. Because I live in another state (I had a destination wedding), I let them run my credit card,. thinking that was the only surcharge.
However, to my surprise, after my wedding, he billed me an extra $ 250! An amount that I NEVER AGREED ON. When I called him and asked him why, he basically retracted everything that we have agreed on and said that with the extra details and the tier, it should be this amount. I told him that we had a deal previously and he basically called me a liar. HE WAS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL ON THE PHONE AND EXTREMELY RUDE. I have never ever met such a dishonest person or company before! Luckily, I was able to dispute this charge with my credit card company (since he should have never charge me without my consent!)
My wedding was a great experience and I now have a wonderful marriage, but it still upsets me that this bit of negative experience have tainted my memories of my wedding!

My first time to Let them eat cake. I myself love cakes anyway it’s wasnt busy at all, the service I have ever experienced. Granted it was friendly service, after we ordered, it was a few minutes before our everything arrived which was cool. I went from hungry to moving past the pangs of wanting to eat. I must say my cake was good though. The cake we had were ordinary to be honest i have had better period with a much shorter wait. But its not that bad for me to stay away completey.

My experience meeting with them for the first time was great. I thought the chef and his assistant were fun and friendly, and my tasting was great as well. Based on the event i needed the cake for i threw ideas at them of what i had in mind for the design. But where they lacked was driving the ideas home, so i left the consultation sort of unsure of what the end result would look like. Its cake! I figured i gave them enough information and the rest is their creative freedom. I was going to be paying a good amount but as long as it was everything i expected i was more than happy to pay it.
I called a week before the party to finalize details and i was a little turned off when the chef and owner of the bakery answered, «i dont know» when asking what the design on top of the cake would finally look like. He was there during the conultation. He couldnt be a little more prepared when speaking to me about the final details?
Once i saw the cake it was nice but i was not impressed with the main design of the cake which was supposed to look like a bodybuilder on top. The rest of the cake was plain, which i wanted, so you would think they would have put all their attention to the figure. He ended up not looking anything like a bodybuilder and the bar bell he was supposed to be holding kept flipping over. The cake was good, but ive had just as good or better. Not sure if id use them again when there are other great cake places that can be more creative and precise.

Tampa Bay is lucky to have such a talented and creative artist at the helm of Let Them Eat Cake. It goes without saying that the cakes are delicious but you won’t believe the originality that makes your cake a work of art. I’ve had cakes from top bakers in San Francisco and Chicago, and I would put Michael Baugh’s cake up against any f them. He is nothing short of an artist and uses only the best, wholesome ingredients.
Michael recently whipped up a fantastic cake for my chocoholic brother, a tennis player. He decorated the cake with a miniature, chocolate tennis net, rackets and a tiny yellow marzipan Wilson ball. It was a shame to cut into it, but we did and the contents were as delicious as the decorations.
I’m firmly on Team Michael, and once you see and taste what he can come up with, you will be too.

I used this company when my husband and I got married in 2006. I had high hopes for this place. We sat down, Michael did a sketch of our future cake to be and I was elated. I paid over $ 600 to feed about 80 people. So, I was expecting this cake to be out of this world! I have to say, when I saw the cake, I was highly disappointed but did not want to show my guests that. My cake was supposed to be purple/​liliac colored (I even gave them the colored napkin which would be at everyones table to get a better idea of what the color was supposed to look like) with the lyrics to our 1^st song as husband and wife written around the cake. My cake was not purple, it was closer to grey with a hint of purple. The color was digusting. However the taste was fantastic-​out of this world! After we returned from our honeymoon. I expressed my disappointment with them and in return they make my husband a birthday cake that was mediocre at best. When I asked them about the color of the cake, they told me they could not make it the color I wanted because it would stain the lips/​mouths of our guests. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO KNOW THAT IN ADVANCE!!!
Oh, and we never got our top layer cake that the previous person disclosed. I give this company only 3 stars because the cake was good.

Highly recommended! My wedding cake turned out gorgeous and every layer was more delicious then the last! His grandmother’s carrot cake was my favorite. The best part is that for your one year anniversary, the bakery will make you a whole new cake instead of having to freeze the top layer of your cake which gets stale. Chef Michael was awesome and can’t wait to use him again for another occasion!
