History
Established in 1974.
Changing Hands Bookstore opened on April Fool’s Day, 1974 with a big interest in the written word, community service and an eye toward books not readily available elsewhere. The original 500 square foot space on 5th Street was outgrown by 1978 and, with the help of a human book brigade of customers and friends, the bookstore moved to Mill Avenue where, within ten years it included three levels of books and gifts occupying 5,000 square feet.
In 1998 a 12,667 square-foot second location on the SW corner of McClintock and Guadalupe was opened, shared with The Wildflower Bread Company. In early 2000, conditions at the Mill Avenue location forced the closing of that store, but the current staff continues its commitment to serve the community at the new location where you’ll find 100,000 new and used books in a store that is a work of art — soft curves, beautiful murals, interesting nooks filled with books and gifts for all tastes and budgets.
