Specialties
Victor Hugo produces award-winning wines focusing on intense hand-crafted red wines from our estate vineyards. History
Established in 1984.
The inspiration that became Victor Hugo Vineyards and Winery began when Victor and Leslie Roberts purchased an old, abandoned cattle ranch which included an ancient redwood barn in 1984. The rocky, calcareous, highly fractured shale soils and rolling to steep hillsides were ideal for winegrapes the first of which were planted in spring 1985. After years of selling grapes to neighboring wineries, Victor and Leslie renovated the redwood barn in 1997 and began producing wines for themselves as Victor Hugo Vineyards and Winery. The small production, owner operated philosophy utilizing estate grapes to produce intense, concentrated wines continues today. Please plan to visit us making an appointment so Leslie or Victor can personally join you for a intimate winetasting.
Meet the Business Owner
Victor R.
Business Owner
Victor Hugo Roberts is the owner/winemaker of his namesake small family-operated vineyard and winery. The family legend has it that he was named after a great uncle and great grandfather (the man who anglicized the family name from the French name Robert to Roberts), with no influence accorded to any literary connection.
In 1982, equipped with an enology degree (U.C. Davis, 1979), and three years of winery experience, Vic saw an ad in a wine industry publication for a winemaker at a new winery in the Paso Robles area. He took the position where he remained for 15 years as winemaker and general manager until leaving in 1997 to establish Victor Hugo Vineyards and Winery.
